Background: Animal African trypanosomiasis (AAT) and its tsetse vector are responsible for annual losses estimated in billions of US dollars ($). Recent years have seen the implementation of a series of multinational interventions. However, actors of AAT control face complex resource allocation decisions due to the geographical range of AAT, diversity of ecological and livestock systems, and range of control methods available. Methods: The study presented here integrates an existing tsetse abundance model with a bio-economic herd model that captures local production characteristics as well as heterogeneities in AAT incidence and breed. These models were used to predict the impact of tsetse elimination on the net value of cattle production in the districts of Mambwe, in Zambia, and Faro et Déo in Cameroon. The net value of cattle production under the current situation was used as a baseline, and compared with alternative publicly funded control programmes. In Zambia, the current baseline is AAT control implemented privately by cattle owners (Scenario Z0). In Cameroon, the baseline (Scenario C0) is a small-scale publicly funded tsetse control programme and privately funded control at farm level. The model was run for 10 years, using a discount rate of 5%.

East Coast Fever (ECF) is the most economically important production disease among traditional beef cattle farmers in Zambia. Despite the disease control efforts by the government , donors, and farmers, ECF cases are increasing. Why does ECF oscillate over time? Can alternative approaches such as systems thinking contribute solutions to the complex ECF problem, avoid unintended consequences, and achieve sustainable results? To answer these research questions and inform the design and implementation of ECF interventions, we qualitatively investigated the influence of dynamic socio-economic , cultural, and ecological factors. We used system dynamics modelling to specify these dynamics qualitatively, and an innovative participatory framework called spatial group model building (SGMB). SGMB uses participatory geographical information system (GIS) concepts and techniques to capture the role of spatial phenomenon in the context of complex systems, allowing stakeholders to identify spatial phenomenon directly on physical maps and integrate such information in model development. Our SGMB process convened focus groups of beef value chain stakeholders in two distinct production systems. The focus groups helped to jointly construct a series of interrelated system dynamics models that described ECF in a broader systems context. Thus, a complementary objective of this study was to demonstrate the applicability of system dynamics modelling and SGMB in animal health. The SGMB process revealed policy leverage points in the beef cattle value chain that could be targeted to improve ECF control. For example, policies that develop sustainable and stable cattle markets and improve household income availability may have positive feedback effects on investment in animal health. The results obtained from a SGMB process also demonstrated that a " one-size-fits-all " approach may not be equally effective in policing ECF in different agro-ecological zones PLOS ONE | https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0189878 December 15, 2017

Aural papillomavirus-induced papillomata were diagnosed on the ear of a seven-month-old German shepherd cross-bred dog in the absence of cutaneous or oral involvement. The aural papillomata lesions in this case were surgically removed after they failed to regress completely following initial immunomodulatory therapy. Histopathology revealed thickened epithelium which rested on proliferative connective tissue with elon gation of dermal papillae into the dermal tissue and covered by acanthotic hyperkeratotic epidermis. In the granular cell layer, large numbers of cells were undergoing degeneration and showing vacuolated cytoplasm. Following surgical excision the dog recovered uneventfully. The significance of this case lies in the location (aural) which is quite rare as compared to other locations in which this case has been reported inveterinary medicine. To the author’s knowledge, this represents the first reported case of aural papilloma in Zambia and probably in Africa.

The specific objectives of this cross sectional study included identifying the socio-economic characteristics of the smallholder dairy farmers; determining the effect of these socioeconomic factors on profitability of smallholder dairy farming; and making recommendations based on the findings. A total of 157 farmers were purposively selected from the study area and questionnaires were used to collect data. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and regression analysis using Statistical Package for Social Scientists (SPSS version 16). The study was carried out over a period of one year (August 2009 to July 2010 inclusive). The findings of the multiple regression analysis indicated that level of education, dairy cow herd size and distance to the market significantly affected the profitability of smallholder dairy farming in Zambia. An increase in level of education and dairy cow herd size, with a unit decrease in distance to the market, led to an increase in profitability of ...

The primary objective of this study was to assess the influence of animal feed composition on greenhouse gas emissions from pig manure on three farms through the use of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) methodology, which measures the digestibility, gross energy and ash content of feed to determine volatile solids content in manure. The farms in this study were purposively sampled based on good farm management and record keeping systems. The data that formed this study was collected over a period of three months (one month on each farm). The digestibility (DE) values in feed for farms in Lusaka, Chongwe and Choma districts were 48.7%, 55.1% and 50.3% for growing pigs, while those for adults pigs were 63.6%, 69.1% and 66.0%. The gross energy (GE) values in feed for these farms were 22.68MJ/day, 23.23MJ/day and 16.92MJ/day in growing pigs, while that for adult pigs were 37.8MJ/day, 38.72MJ/day and 28.2MJ/day, respectively. The Ash content values in both feed and man...

The study was conducted to assess the compositional and microbial quality of pasteurized and Ultra High Temperature (UHT) treated milk on the market in Lusaka, Zambia. A total of 18 brands of milk (7 pasteurized and 11 UHT treated) were purchased from supermarkets and this formed the sample size of the study. The quality of milk was evaluated by assessing it for Total Bacteria Count (TBC), Total Coliform Count (TCC), isolation of Staphylococcus spp, Salmonella spp and Clostridium perfringes by culturing the samples of milk on standard plate count agar, violet red bile glucose agar and selective media. Milk components, freezing point and added water were determined using LactiCheck ultrasonic milk analyser while antibiotic residue using Copan Milk Test and Beta Star Combo Test kit. The butter fat content of heat treated milk ranged from 2.91–3.74 %, protein from 2.05-3.47% and lactose 2.94-5.07%. Solid Not Fat (SNF) content ranged from 7.28- 9.23%, with 5 samples recording below the ...

The purpose of the study was to estimate milk production potential and addressing the interventions related to improving production, animal husbandry practices and milk marketing in key traditional cattle keeping areas of Zambia. The emphasis was on collecting information regarding; an estimation of number of cattle owning households, cattle numbers, herd structure, seasonal cattle movements, current milk production volumes, what households do with their current milk, adoption rates of good animal husbandry practices including herd health, veterinary input supply and extension service provision from the key traditional cattle keeping areas. Data used to achieve these objectives was obtained using detailed focus group discussions and interview-based questionnaires from several stakeholders. The 15 selected districts had a total population of 1,162,645 traditional cattle, owned by 116,265 households, with an average of 10 cattle per household. Milk production from the these districts ...

An evaluation of financial losses due to bovine fasciolosis in Senanga and Shang'ombo districts in the Western Province of Zambia was carried out retrospectively using abattoir records obtained from Senanga District Veterinary office. The study covered a period of 10 years from January 2001 to December 2010. Budgetary analysis was used to estimate annual financial losses arising from whole liver condemnations. Findings of the study indicate that LL8,477 catlle were slaughtered and the same number of livers examined from 2001-2010, out of which 24,060 (20,77o/o) whole livers were condemned due to fasciolosis, resulting in a direct financial loss of approximately zl4K 1.2 billion which is currently equivalent to approximately US$ 245,000. This implies an annual loss of approximately US$ 24,500 for the 2 districts only. Considering that large portions of Western, Northwestern, Southern, Central and Northern provinces are flood plains and therefore equally prone to fasciolosis, thes...

An evaluation of tumors of domestic animals brought to the School of Veterinary Medicine; Pathology Laboratory in Zambia was carried out retrospectively using histopathology records in order to find out their incidence/occurrence in various species. A total number of 38 cases of tumors were reported over the period of eight years (from 2002-2010) from five species. Findings indicated that among these five species of domestic animals examined, 30 cases were from dogs, two cases from cattle, two cases from cats, three cases from horses and one case from pigs, respectively. Among the 38 tumors presented, Nine were adenocarcinomas, seven squamous cell carcinomas, three each of osteosarcomas, lymphomas and pappillomas, two each of mast cell tumors, heamangiosarcomas, fibromas and leiomyomas, and one each were fibrosarcomas, haemangiomas, melanomas, transmissible venereal tumors and lymphosarcomas, all from different body sites. It was observed that most (26.3%) of the tumors presented we...

This paper describes a case of Sarcocytosis in an adult Brahman cow, diagnosed based on macroscopic and microscopic findings, after being erroneously diagnosed as Bovine Cysticercosis on parasitological examination. Histopathological findings showed a spindle-shaped sarcocystis cyst, measuring 250!m in length and surrounded by variable numbers of inflammatory cells, with presence of muscular degeneration. Very little or no literature is available stressing on the need to carryout routine histopathology on suspected cases of Cysticercosis. This case report therefore emphaslzes on the significance of carrying out routine histopathological examination on cases suspected to be Cysticercosis based on parasitological examination in order to rule out Sarcocystocis which is of public health significance (zoonotic disease).

Market access has been identified as one of the foremost factors influencing the performance of small scale producers in developing countries (more particularly in least developing countries). Therefore the objective of the study was to assess the minimum relative costs for establishing a standard and viable milk collection centre (MCC) so as to boost milk production and create market access among the scattered small scale dairy farmers in Zambia. Data used for the assessment was purposively obtained from 19 out of the 25 active dairy cooperative-owned milk collection centres in Zambia. Findings indicated that all the milk collection centres in Zambia are run by farmers in the form of a dairy cooperative (one-tier cooperative market model). In order to be able to operate sufficiently and efficiently, the cooperative needs to pay a salary to a minimum of 4 workers (manager, milk receiver cum cleaner, driver and watchman) depending upon volume of milk it is handling. This is the minim...

Vaginal fibrosarcomas are rarely described in dogs as compared to those of the skin and subcutis. These tumors have been reported in cows (Musal and Aydogan, 2007; Hamali and Ashrafihelan, 2010). The only detailed study on tumors of dogs and cats in Kenya and probably in Africa by Mugera (1968) recorded 585 tumors, out of which only one was a fibrosarcoma of the esophagus and none of the vagina. In an only 5year survey study of neoplasms of dogs in Zambia by Pandey et al (1983), who reported one case of fibrosarcoma in the skin of 67 tumors of dogs studied, there has never been any case reported on fibrosarcomas of the genital tract in dogs in Zambia and probably in Africa. This report therefore describes a case of undifferentiated vaginal fibrosarcoma in a dog in Zambia.
