Background: Animal African trypanosomiasis (AAT) and its tsetse vector are responsible for annual losses estimated in billions of US dollars ($). Recent years have seen the implementation of a series of multinational interventions. However, actors of AAT control face complex resource allocation decisions due to the geographical range of AAT, diversity of ecological and livestock systems, and range of control methods available. Methods: The study presented here integrates an existing tsetse abundance model with a bio-economic herd model that captures local production characteristics as well as heterogeneities in AAT incidence and breed. These models were used to predict the impact of tsetse elimination on the net value of cattle production in the districts of Mambwe, in Zambia, and Faro et Déo in Cameroon. The net value of cattle production under the current situation was used as a baseline, and compared with alternative publicly funded control programmes. In Zambia, the current baseline is AAT control implemented privately by cattle owners (Scenario Z0). In Cameroon, the baseline (Scenario C0) is a small-scale publicly funded tsetse control programme and privately funded control at farm level. The model was run for 10 years, using a discount rate of 5%.

A Holstein Friesian 3/4 cross-bred cow aged 10 years old, belonging to School of Agricultural Sciences of The University of Zambia, was presented to the Veterinary Clinic of the School of Veterinary Medicine, with the history of swelling, growth and bleeding from vulva. The body temperature, feeding and grazing habit of the cow was reported to be normal.

Aural papillomavirus-induced papillomata were diagnosed on the ear of a seven-month-old German shepherd cross-bred dog in the absence of cutaneous or oral involvement. The aural papillomata lesions in this case were surgically removed after they failed to regress completely following initial immunomodulatory therapy. Histopathology revealed thickened epithelium which rested on proliferative connective tissue with elon gation of dermal papillae into the dermal tissue and covered by acanthotic hyperkeratotic epidermis. In the granular cell layer, large numbers of cells were undergoing degeneration and showing vacuolated cytoplasm. Following surgical excision the dog recovered uneventfully. The significance of this case lies in the location (aural) which is quite rare as compared to other locations in which this case has been reported inveterinary medicine. To the author’s knowledge, this represents the first reported case of aural papilloma in Zambia and probably in Africa.

The specific objectives of this cross sectional study included identifying the socio-economic characteristics of the smallholder dairy farmers; determining the effect of these socioeconomic factors on profitability of smallholder dairy farming; and making recommendations based on the findings. A total of 157 farmers were purposively selected from the study area and questionnaires were used to collect data. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and regression analysis using Statistical Package for Social Scientists (SPSS version 16). The study was carried out over a period of one year (August 2009 to July 2010 inclusive). The findings of the multiple regression analysis indicated that level of education, dairy cow herd size and distance to the market significantly affected the profitability of smallholder dairy farming in Zambia. An increase in level of education and dairy cow herd size, with a unit decrease in distance to the market, led to an increase in profitability of ...

The primary objective of this study was to assess the influence of animal feed composition on greenhouse gas emissions from pig manure on three farms through the use of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) methodology, which measures the digestibility, gross energy and ash content of feed to determine volatile solids content in manure. The farms in this study were purposively sampled based on good farm management and record keeping systems. The data that formed this study was collected over a period of three months (one month on each farm). The digestibility (DE) values in feed for farms in Lusaka, Chongwe and Choma districts were 48.7%, 55.1% and 50.3% for growing pigs, while those for adults pigs were 63.6%, 69.1% and 66.0%. The gross energy (GE) values in feed for these farms were 22.68MJ/day, 23.23MJ/day and 16.92MJ/day in growing pigs, while that for adult pigs were 37.8MJ/day, 38.72MJ/day and 28.2MJ/day, respectively. The Ash content values in both feed and man...

The purpose of the study was to estimate milk production potential and addressing the interventions related to improving production, animal husbandry practices and milk marketing in key traditional cattle keeping areas of Zambia. The emphasis was on collecting information regarding; an estimation of number of cattle owning households, cattle numbers, herd structure, seasonal cattle movements, current milk production volumes, what households do with their current milk, adoption rates of good animal husbandry practices including herd health, veterinary input supply and extension service provision from the key traditional cattle keeping areas. Data used to achieve these objectives was obtained using detailed focus group discussions and interview-based questionnaires from several stakeholders. The 15 selected districts had a total population of 1,162,645 traditional cattle, owned by 116,265 households, with an average of 10 cattle per household. Milk production from the these districts ...

This paper describes a case of Sarcocytosis in an adult Brahman cow, diagnosed based on macroscopic and microscopic findings, after being erroneously diagnosed as Bovine Cysticercosis on parasitological examination. Histopathological findings showed a spindle-shaped sarcocystis cyst, measuring 250!m in length and surrounded by variable numbers of inflammatory cells, with presence of muscular degeneration. Very little or no literature is available stressing on the need to carryout routine histopathology on suspected cases of Cysticercosis. This case report therefore emphaslzes on the significance of carrying out routine histopathological examination on cases suspected to be Cysticercosis based on parasitological examination in order to rule out Sarcocystocis which is of public health significance (zoonotic disease).

Market access has been identified as one of the foremost factors influencing the performance of small scale producers in developing countries (more particularly in least developing countries). Therefore the objective of the study was to assess the minimum relative costs for establishing a standard and viable milk collection centre (MCC) so as to boost milk production and create market access among the scattered small scale dairy farmers in Zambia. Data used for the assessment was purposively obtained from 19 out of the 25 active dairy cooperative-owned milk collection centres in Zambia. Findings indicated that all the milk collection centres in Zambia are run by farmers in the form of a dairy cooperative (one-tier cooperative market model). In order to be able to operate sufficiently and efficiently, the cooperative needs to pay a salary to a minimum of 4 workers (manager, milk receiver cum cleaner, driver and watchman) depending upon volume of milk it is handling. This is the minim...
