This article considers the meaning of the automobile in American culture, with a focus on how attitudes and symbolism have an impact on ridesharing (carpooling). The author reports on her 2003 study that used ethnographic methods to learn about the uses and associated meaning of the car’s interior spaces. Participants talked about the car interior as a comfortable place to relax, spend quality time with the kids, have a snack or lunch with a friend, take the family on vacation, invite a date. The author proposes a metaphor that sets up the automobile as private living space. The feeling that one’s car is private space is a potential barrier to ridesharing schemes and may explain why ridesharing is not more widespread in the United States. Many people may see the transportation of a stranger as an intrusion into personal, private space. The author concludes with a brief discussion of strategies that could help ease the ridesharing process. One strategy might be the use of a rating sy...

As we reflect on the evolving nature of our practice, it is timely to consider how these individual evolutions impact the broader field of ethnographic praxis in industry. First, we look at the career paths of senior members of the EPIC community to chart key transitions in their individual careers. We observe that their career paths have moved them away from fieldwork, and into management where they shape projects, mentor staff and participate in decision-making. Thus, a key aspect of evolution for the EPIC community lies in how senior members are influencing what industry expects from ethnographic praxis. In a second intersecting theme we review how these individual career evolutions collectively influence the EPIC Community of Practice. We discuss how our field continues to evolve both on an individual level and within the Community of Practice to which we all belong

Applied anthropology is increasing an alternative to academic anthropological contributing to innovations in a broad range of products and services including technology, office equipment and furniture, business organization, breakfast foods, automobiles, hand sanitizers, communication media, medical equipment, smartphones, and much, much more. When applied anthropologists began to work in business organizations, they first called themselves industrial anthropologists and, later, organizational anthropologists. The first industrial and organizational anthropologists were based in the academy. However, in the 1990s a growing number of anthropologists also began to be employed at private businesses, including the Palo Alto Research Center (PARC), IDEO, E-Lab, GVO, and even General Motors. There they were instrumental in applying the theory and methods of anthropology to potential innovation. At these companies , many of early applied anthropologists became accidental innovators as a co...

The High Productivity Computing Systems (HPCS) program seeks a tenfold productivity increase in High Performance Computing (HPC), where productivity is understood to be a composite of system performance, system robustness, programmability, portability, and administrative concerns. Of these, programmability is the least well understood and perceived to be the most problematic. It has been suggested that an “expertise gap” is at the heart of the problem in HPC application development. Preliminary results from research conducted by Sun Microsystems and other participants in the HPCS program confirm that such an “expertise gap” does exist and does exert a significant confounding influence on HPC application development. Further, the nature of the “expertise gap” appears not to be amenable to previously proposed solutions such as “more education” and “more people.” A productivity improvement of the scale sought by the HPCS program will require fundamental transformations in the way HPC a...

Cyber-security studies have traditionally focused on the individual to understand computer-user risk mediation. This study is the first attempt to use social networks of practice to compare how security is perceived by IT and Non-IT professionals, and the extent the perceptions of each are communicated. To investigate the similarities and differences between the two groups, we employed ethnography and trace ethnography to identify and compare each group’s beliefs and concerns. Findings demonstrate significant differences in how IT and Non-IT professionals think about, and communicate cyber security. These differences in cyber security suggests a mismatch about how IT and Non-IT think and talk about cyber-security. This mismatch has consequences for the education of Non-IT professionals. Because each is concerned about different issues, when IT tries to educate Non-IT about cyber-threats, they may be talking past each other. As a result, the cyber-awareness information does not necessarily prompt action by Non-IT professionals

Susan Squires draws on her own experience and that of others to discuss the sometimes circuitous path followed by practitioners as they build careers and develop their professional identities. The chapter begins with a look back at how the practice option developed within anthropology, and how Squires herself made the decision to go into practice. Using examples from her own career, she discusses the importance of continuing to learn on the job, and how practitioner career arcs involve progressive increases in roles and responsibilities, while also noting some of the salient differences between practice and the academy. The chapter concludes by offering some lessons learned, as well as a reminder that the field of practice is still evolving.

Loneliness can play a significant role in the wellbeing of older adults. This article describes a qualitative method for using case notes from the clinical records of older individuals in order to investigate the priority concerns spontaneously reported by older adults to deepen our understanding of both the context in which reported loneliness occurs in Ireland and the potential triggers. The participants in this study represent a cross-section of older adults who participated in the Technology Research for Independent Living Clinic (TRIL). Data were collected from participants through interviewer case notes at the TRIL centre in St James's hospital, Dublin. 624 participants (431 females; 193 males) ranging in age from 60-92 years (Mean 73 years, SD 7 years) took part in the study. All were community dwelling and provided consent. A thematic analysis from grounded theory was used to evaluate the case notes for each participant. Preliminary results highlight the richness of phen...
