The aim of this paper is to clarify some of the positions,
insights, and interests based on which Britain shaped
its policy towards the Adriatic question, i.e. the territorial
aspirations of the Kingdom of Italy and resolving
the border disputes with the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats,
and Slovenes. The research was based on documents
preserved at the National Archives in London and the
analysis focuses on the way in which the perception of
the problem and the idea for its solution were formed
within the British diplomatic and military circles. This
has helped obtain a clearer picture of how the British
administration viewed the Eastern Adriatic, how it used
information from the field, academic expertise, and military
and intelligence analysis, and how the diplomatic
dispute was based on all of the above. British imperial
interests and their relations with partners within the
Entente have also been taken into account, as well as the
way in which the principles of international relations
worked in regard to this particular issue. It has also
been shown that, in the Adriatic area, problems that at
first glance may seem unrelated sometimes intersected.

The authors will try to present the positioning of British foreign policy towards the events related to the dissolution of Yugoslavia and the establishment of the Republic of Croatia. Franjo Tuđman, being the most important figure in Croatian politics during that period can serve as a good example of British politics and projected attitudes. The British foreign policy has not been focused on Franjo Tuđman as a person, but primarily as the bearer of Croatian statehood ideas. This idea was the focus of interest of British foreign policy because it directly affected the disintegration of the Yugoslav state. The paper will analyze the attitude of the British foreign policy towards Franjo Tuđman in the period before and after the collapse of Yugoslavia, or more precisely the achieving of Croatian independence, primarily on the basis of accessible archival and other publicly available sources. Special attention will be devoted to the British media and their role in creating the image of Tuđman and the Croatian state during this crucial period of Croatian history.

Rad će pokušati doprinijeti boljemu poznavanju društveno–
političkih procesa u dalmatinskome zaleđu u
prvim godinama Kraljevine SHS, kada dolazi do oblikovanja
institucionalnih okvira nove države. Velik broj
radova i studija napisan je o tome razdoblju u kontekstu
„hrvatsko–srpskih“ odnosa, visoke politike, ponašanja i
djelovanja političkih i društvenih elita itd. Cilj je ovoga
rada dati prilog za uvid u lokalne odnose i dinamiku
društvenih i političkih odnosa u manjim sredinama
koje su često izvan fokusa istraživačkih poduhvata. U
radu je posebna pozornost usmjerena na djelovanje
katoličkoga klera, osobito franjevaca, u dalmatinskome
zaleđu te aktivnostima Hrvatske pučke stranke. Zbog
prirode arhivskoga materijala rad se u najvećoj mjeri
bavi srednjodalmatinskim zaleđem. Istraživanje se temelji
prvenstveno na materijalima iz Arhiva Jugoslavije
u Beogradu. Korišteni su fondovi Ministarstva unutrašnjih
poslova Kraljevine Jugoslavije i Ministarstva vjera
Kraljevine Srba, Hrvata i Slovenaca. / The paper attempts to contribute to a better understanding
of socio-political processes in the Dalmatian
hinterland during the early years of the Kingdom of
the Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, when the institutional
framework of the new state was being shaped. A large
number of works and studies have been written about
the period in the context of Croatian-Serbian relationships,
high-level politics, the conduct and actions of the
political and social elites, etc. The aim of this paper is to
offer an insight into local relations and the dynamics of
social and political relation in minor places which have
often remained outside the focus of research. The focus
is on the activity of the Catholic clergy, particularly the
Franciscans, and the Croatian Popular Party (Hrvatska
pučka stranka – HPS), in the Dalmatian hinterland. Due
to the nature of the archive material, the paper deals
mostly with the central Dalmatian hinterland. The research
was based primarily on material in the Archives
of Yugoslavia in Belgrade, with additional material from
the funds of the Ministry of the Interior of the Kingdom
of Yugoslavia and the Ministry of Religion of the
Kingdom of the Serbs, Croats and Slovenes.
