Es ist ein bekanntes Klischee, dass die Muslime üblicherweise eine negative Einstellung zu Hunden haben. Traditionell waren die Hunde als unrein betrachtet, und es gibt viele Verweise auf sie in der Sunna Literatur und in der islamischen Rechtstradition. Aufgrund dieser negativen Einstellung erhielten Hunde nur geringe Wertschätzung in den muslimischen Ländern, und es ist äußerst ungewöhnlich, dass Hunde als Haustiere gehalten werden. Ferner werden heutzutage diese religiöse Wahrnehmungen gelegentlich verwendet, um den Missbrauch und die Verwahrlosung von Hunden in muslimischen Ländern rechtzufertigen. Das grundlegende Ziel dieser Diplomarbeit ist es, einen historischen und begrifflichen Rahmen für die Beziehungen zwischen dem Islam und denHunden zu präsentieren. Identity Formation of Muslim Women in the Service of Reconciliation: Can Historical Role-Models provide common ground for a Rapprochement of Islamic Schools of Thought? When a new understanding of the position of Muslim women in society was sought, religious circles found it in role-models such as family and female companions of Prophet Muhammad. They provided the clue for Muslim women's identity in a rapidly changing modern world. Nowadays, conflicts raging in the Muslim world have tainted the unifying image of those role models. Differences have not stopped at ideological questions: parallel to armed conflicts propaganda campaigns are going on, involving also distinguished female figures of early Islam. Women are among the most-affected victims of this situation. Once conflicts subside and wars end, peace has to be consolidated also in the social-religious sphere. It shall be discussed whether female role-models of early Islam can shape peace-building identities of present-day Muslim women, to foster understanding and respect between Islamic schools of thought, to bridge gaps between Sunni and Shia Muslims, and to bring about a spirit of reconciliation by deconstructing historical biases.

Seit 2011 tobt ein Bürgerkrieg in Syrien. Beginnend mit einem Aufstand gegen das Regime von Bashar al-Assad im März dieses Jahres hat sich ein Flächenbrand durch das ganze Land gefressen, dem mindestens 200.000 Menschen zum Opfer gefallen sind und der Millionen zur Flucht gezwungen hat. Die Fronten werden von Monat zu Monat unklarer, und seit der sogenannte „Islamische Staat“ im Süden und Kurdenmilizen im Norden autonome Verwaltungen und Kriegsregime aufgezogen haben, kann von einem einheitlichen syrischen Staat nicht mehr gesprochen werden.
Das Land in der Levante ist von der aktuellen Berichterstattung und den politischen Auseinandersetzungen rund um die Neugestaltung des Nahen und Mittleren Ostens nicht mehr wegzudenken. Die Dauer des Konflikts, die unklaren Machtverhältnisse und die Gefahr einer Destabilisierung der gesamten Region machen eine ausführliche Auseinandersetzung wichtiger denn je.
Das Buch „Syrien. Ein Land im Krieg. Hintergründe, Analysen, Berichte“ bietet einen Einblick in die vielschichtigen Aspekte der syrischen Geschichte und Gesellschaft sowie in die strukturellen Ursachen des Bürgerkrieges. Einen weiteren Schwerpunkt stellen die fragilen Nachbarschaftsbeziehungen und die oftmals unbeständigen geostrategischen Allianzen dar. Eine ausführliche Zeittafel zur Geschichte des modernen Syrien – vom Zerfall des Osmanischen Reiches bis zu den aktuellen Ereignissen – und ein Literaturüberblick runden den Band ab.

In the Islamic Republic of Iran, Islamic theological seminaries for women produce thousands of young female theologians. In addition to the (traditional and socio-cultural) role assigned to them within the family, their functions in society are also of relevance. The development of Islamic theological thought – in Iran mainly in the framework of Shi " ite religious philosophy and jurisprudence – has considerable bearing on the legal and social situation of women in the Islamic Republic, and beyond that, on contemporary Islamic thought. To female graduates of Islamic seminaries, the labour market offers work mainly in the educative, cultural or social field. However, qualified female theologians can reach high positions in many areas, including the judiciary and the political arena. This paper reflects preliminary research on ideas and possible concepts concerning female leadership in the Iranian system of higher religious education through theological seminaries and departments of religion at universities. First results show a certain preference for " indirect leadership " roles for women, both at the community and policy level.

In the course of the 20 th century, women's rights have increasingly been linked to women's economic independence. Globalization combined with economic liberalism brought about a socio-political climate which gives the impression that women's rights are looked upon through an increasingly materialistic perspective, without much consideration of individual or cultural preferences:
 Wives are expected to be gainfully employed; the two-income family tends to become the economic and social norm.
 Domestic work does not count as a valuable social and economic function; in new family models it is to be divided between spouses, but in practice most of it is shouldered by women in their (supposed) leisure time.
 Women in part-time jobs face disadvantages in wages and retirement provisions, and while economic realities struggle with joblessness or produce a social class of "working poor", there is pressure upon women to work in full-time jobs.
 Mothers' choice between nurseries/kindergartens or caring for their offspring during the early years of a child's life, is increasingly minimized.
 While single parents exist, their double work-load is nowhere accounted for;
 Whereas family care for old or disabled people is being encouraged instead of "homes for the elderly", the work and emotional input by caring family members (mostly women), is not adequately recognized in the social, psychological and economic sense.
 The ecological and economical value of unpaid work by rural women is not duly acknowledged and rewarded in national economies.
 Gender-specific problems concerning the integration of migrants and refugees into the labour force and social fabric of host communities need to be addressed.
The paper reviews the present situation and examines ways to dissociate women's empowerment from purely economic or legal considerations.It is argued that a general reduction of working hours would ease the access of women to the job market and allow for a more humane, family-friendly and culturally compatible work environment.

Wenn praktizierende Musliminnen sich als (islamische) Feministinnen bezeichnen, wird das oft nicht ernst genommen. Die Suche nach einer zeitgemäßen Koranhermeneutik, die den Text auch heute noch relevant macht, hat durchaus  Berührungspunkte mit der Aufgabe der Textinterpretation der Bibel. Aber nicht nur theologische Begründungen für Geschlechtergerechtigkeit sind wichtig, auch das Schaffen der entsprechenden sozialen Möglichkeiten in Bildung und Beruf spielt eine Rolle.
