The hypothesis that the MP voicing of the voiceless velar stop OIr. * -k- in postvocalic position occurred later than the voicing of the other two OIr. voiceless stops is argued, in this work, on the basis of data inferable from the treatment of the outcomes of OIr. * -k- in the Greek versions of the Sassanid inscriptions, in the NP and MP continuations, in the Manichaean texts and, finally, in the light of the data, generally not taken into consideration by the literature on the subject, provided by Iranian loanwords in Syriac and Talmudic Aramaic.

The reconstruction of *-Vka- suffixes in Indo-Iranian has been widely debated. At the beginning of the twentieth century, many scholars, op- erating within the theoretical framework provided by the Neogrammar- ians, deny the presence of these suffixes in the Çgveda and, as a conse- quence, their reconstruction in Indo-Iranian, and even more so in Pro- to-Indo-European. Today we consider the linguistic change in the light of diachronic, dialectal, and sociolinguistic variability, and we benefit from a better knowledge of the Iranian languages. Therefore we argue that these suffixes are attested in Vedic and Avestan, witnessed by the parallel traditions for Old Persian, and that they are attributable to In- do-Iranian; their scarce attestation mainly depends on their low socio- linguistic character.
