Europeans "seen from afar” contributed to the building of American identity as did the ones who ... more Europeans "seen from afar” contributed to the building of American identity as did the ones who made their way to the New World. Often despised, slightly feared, admired for their cultural traditions but also perceived as a bothersome counterpart, they provided an image of Europe which obsessed thoughts and deeds of 18th- and 19th-century Americans, especially the ones interested in education. Various declinations of the theme are here offered by Italian and foreign scholars.
Conclusions are provided by Francesco Mattei and Benedetto Vertecchi, with a reflection on how an America "seen from afar" influences today's educational practices, and reasoning on how the Old World educational culture could still give its contribution in this crowded battlefield.

The theoretical contribution was developed within the POT project (Orientation and Tutoring Plans... more The theoretical contribution was developed within the POT project (Orientation and Tutoring Plans) financed by the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research and presents a clarification related to the conceptual framework of a future empirical research on educational activities aimed at promoting the development of self-orientation competence for academic students. A conceptual analysis of some elements related to the di-dactic activities and to the development of this competence will be proposed, focusing attention on the system of objectives and on some specific aspects that concern the form of some learning objectives and their content. Finally, possible developments of the study will be identified, which highlight the importance of making explicit the theoretical frame for the didactic activities of self-orientation and the learning mechanisms that the didactic activities can activate to promote the processes of change. Riassunto-Il contributo, di natura teorica, si colloca nell'ambito del progetto POT (Piani per l'Orientamento e il Tutorato) finanziato dal MIUR e presenta un lavoro di chiarificazione relativamente alla cornice concettuale di una futura ricerca empirica sulle attività didattiche funzionali a favorire, negli studenti universitari, lo sviluppo della com-petenza di auto-orientamento. Sarà sviluppata un'analisi concettuale di alcuni elementi relativi all'attività didattica finalizzata a promuovere lo sviluppo di tale competenza, focalizzando l'attenzione sul sistema degli obiettivi e su alcuni aspetti specifici che riguardano la forma di alcuni obiettivi di apprendimento e il loro contenuto. Verranno infine individuati possibili sviluppi dello studio sottolineando l'importanza dell'esplicitazione della cornice teorica di riferimento per le attività didattiche di auto-orientamento e dei meccanismi apprenditivi che queste attività possono attivare per favorire i processi di cambiamento.
