The construction of the Molo Cosimo, the most important port infrastructure in Livorno during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, played a decisive role in allowing the expansion of maritime traffic between the powerful mercantile economies of Northern Europe and Medici Tuscany. Less than thirty years after the works were finished, Robert Dudley
“Duke of Nortumbria” proudly claimed to be the “inventore” of the pier in his famous nautical work Dell’Arcano del Mare. However, his statement was repeatedly challenged in later historical narratives on Livorno and its port, as some historians have favoured the role of different architects and engineers. Through the screening and comparison of evidence drawn
from published and unpublished documents and drawings, the essay offers new elements on the history of the Molo Cosimo and investigates Robert Dudley’s real responsibilities with respect to the design of this great infrastructure and of its appurtenances.

In this contribution we demonstrate, on the basis of written and visual documents, that no later than 1638 the Medici were in possession of a large Mughal painting depicting the emperor Jahangir on a larger-than-life scale, very similar but not identical to one auctioned in 1995 by Sotheby's and in 2011 by Bohnams and the subject of numerous studies in recent years. We trace the history of the painting in the Medici collections up to its destruction in the Uffizi fire of 1762 and develop hypotheses on how and when it arrived in Florence. We reconstruct its formal characteristics as far as possible; finally, we attempt to outline a credible scenario for the creation in the ateliers of the Mughal court of a type of portrait painting so unusual in a South Asian context.

This article presents two unpublished drawings coming from the Largest Talman Album, a voluminous collection of architectural designs belonging to the famous collector and antiquarian John Talman, conserved at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. The sheets are attributed to Pellegrino Tibaldi on the grounds of an analysis of the graphic and stylistic characteristics of the designs and are related to the Sanctuary of Santa Maria del Fonte di Caravaggio. In the seventh decade of the 16th century, on the wishes of San Carlo Borromeo, this building was the object of a radical redefinition both architecturally and in terms of cult worship. The designs are analyzed in the context of Tibaldi’s activity at the sanctuary and are compared with sheets already known regarding the reconstruction of the temple conserved at the Biblioteca Ambrosiana and with a comprehensive autograph report conserved in the sanctuary’s archive. Of particular interest is the analysis of the ground-plan characteristics of the two projects and their meaning in relation to the specific cult characteristics of the dual pole of devotion comprising the ‘Fonte miracoloso’ and the so-called ‘Sacro Speco’, that is, the precise location of the Virgin’s apparition. The drawings illustrated in the article, today conserved at Oxford, reveal the particular attention paid by Pellegrino Tibaldi to the design of the sacellum used to preserve these venerable testimonies. The purpose of the complex definition of the small building was to exalt the main pole of worship inside the vast sanctuary and to regulate access to the two distinct memorial sites by different types of pilgrim. Lastly, the history of the ownership of the drawings is investigated in an attempt to reconstruct the reasons for their entering the Talman collection.

Paper-models were widely used by artists from 16th to 18th Century. They were assembled from orthogonal architectural drawings, cut, folded and glued in order to create three-dimensional objects. Although
they have never been considered as a field of study, a large number of documents testify the relevance of paper-models in the process of communicating ideas between architects and patrons, casting new
light on many central aspects of Renaissance and Baroque design.
So far mistaken for common orthogonal drawings, many ancient architectural designs can be recognized as unfolded models thanks to the presence of certain cuts, folds, or tabs. The paper
discusses a wide group of drawings originally assembled as three-dimensional models (some still unpublished), executed by Peruzzi, Buontalenti, and Brandani and many other leading Italian artists and architects from 16th, 17th and 18th Century. Through selected
documents many no longer existing models manufactured - among the others - by Cellini, Alessi and Bernini, will be also discussed in their proper cultural, material and social contexts.
