This book deals with the reception of Italian elitism in the United States, identifying its key protagonists, phases, and themes. It starts from the reconstruction of the scientific and political debates aroused in the United States by the works of Mosca, Pareto, and Michels, and moves on to define their theoretical influence in the American scientific and academic contexts. The analysis takes into consideration the period from the first contact between elitists and American academia in the early 1920s to the publication of The Power Elite by Mills, in 1956, which marks the emancipation of American elitism. After introducing the fundamental principles of elite theory, the first part of the study reconstructs the debate that it aroused beyond the Atlantic. The second part examines the original American reworking of the elitist lesson, concentrating on the works of the authors most strongly influenced by it: Joseph A. Schumpeter, Harold D. Lasswell, and Charles W. Mills. The book aims to shed light on the contribution of Italian elitism to the development of American political thought.

The importance that the Italian Elite theory has had for the development of the social sciences is a fact well established. Equally known is that the center of political studies shifted rapidly from Europe to the United States, gradually building a cultural hegemony in this area of study. The essay aims at understand the relationship between the Italian elitists and American academia in the 20s-30s, reconstructing dynamics, places and characters; in order to show the important role of the Italian elitism for the renewal of political science in the United States, and for political studies in general. The main point of the article is that the American scholars examined Elitism to understand Fascism and analyzed issues (propaganda, patriotism, control of masses, psychology of crowd) that they regarded as particularly important for the USA and its technocratic development.

Syndicalism was an important chapter of Italian history in the early 1900s. Although Italian Syndicalism was linked with the equivalent movement in France (Georges Sorel), it had several distinctive features and developed through different stages. With the support of previously unknown documents, this study investigates the movement’s political and cultural origins. In particular, it analyses the relevance of the Southern Italian setting, from which most of the syndicalists came. The article, then, in addition to reconstructing their early political experiences, focuses on the syndacalists’ political and economical thought and on their personal relationships (Antonio Labriola, Benedetto Croce, etc.).
