ABSTRACT A millimeter-wave (mm-wave) full-duplex bidirectional fiber-wireless (Fi-Wi) system employing a combination of uncorrelated optical heterodyning and radio frequency (RF) self-homodyning is proposed and demonstrated. The proposed system significantly simplifies the optical mm-wave generation, transport, and data recovery both in downlink and uplink directions. Experimental results confirm that such a bi-directional architecture can successfully avoid most of the high-speed electrooptic and RF devices from both the central station and base stations, and transforms the mm-wave Fi-Wi link to any conventional optical communication link in the access or metro domain.

Recent development in telecommunication and information technologies came up with several technology options for telemedicine applications in hospitals and for medics for quality healthcare to patients. The research trends therefore need to be addressed for the proper deployment of technologies in a clinical setting or in a telemedicine environment with the adaptive compromise of technology and suitability. In this chapter, along with a description of the research trends and system design issues concerned with telemedicine, a mobile telemedicine system architecture and design have been proposed. Other current telemedicine technology options and prospects and challenges of future research in this emerging area are also described to indicate the possible future research challenges. Research in telemedicine is a future to provide improved and quality access to the healthcare professionals and patients. Therefore, developing telemedicine systems with state-of-the-art technologies is of paramount importance and hence, this chapter would link up an important step in system analysis and design perspective to this evolving research arena.

Radio over fiber (RoF) system is a promising technique for microcell and picocell applications for deployment of future ubiquitous wireless data networks. However, the performance of RoF systems can be severely degraded due to nonlinear effects in the channel. Also, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), as a standard for broadband wireless networks, is being proposed for deployment with RoF systems to facilitate the total performance of a system. In this research, at first, the performance of OFDM-based RoF link with Mach-Zehnder modulator distortion effects has been analyzed at 5.8 GHz. Evaluation of mean-squared error of the proposed OFDM-RoF system was carried out to compare with the conventional single carrier system based RoF link after the modulator distortion case and also for fixed signal to noise ratio (SNR) of 20 dB using undistorted OFDM signal. Later, nominal and offset biasing pre-distortion techniques are applied in proposed system to linearize the OFDM-RoF link. Thus, finally a comparison between the aforementioned pre-distortion techniques applied showed important observation in terms of distortion-free dynamic range and SNR to choose offset predistortion technique for our proposed system

I. INTRODUCTION Despite the global economic slump in the recent past, the number of households with fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) connections has been growing at a sustained rate close to 30% worldwide and will accumulate to the number of fiber-connected premises to 150 million by 2013 [1]. For example, 93% of Australian premises are expected to be connected with fiber by 2015 [2]. Such widespread deployment of FTTH makes broadband access a natural choice through fixed point optical network units (ONUs). FTTH network provides the best platform to ...

ABSTRACT A simplified uplink communication scheme for millimeter-wave (mm-wave) radio-over-fiber system employing RF self-homodyning at the base station (BS) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The proposed scheme establishes a simple low-speed data transmission from the BS to the central station and simplifies the BS and uplink optical transport by removing most of the required high speed optoelectronic and RF devices.
