Anne Bielman Sanchez
– IIe s. ap.. n. è.) ». De 2007 à 2011, elle a été Doyenne de la Faculté des lettres-UNIL.

By contrast, the contemporary documents (inscriptions, papyri, reliefs) give an active role to Arsinoe III and Cleopatra II: from the battle of Raphia (217 BCE) until the civil war which opposed Ptolemy VIII and Cleopatra II in 132–124 BCE, the Ptolemaic sovereigns were used to show themselves as a couple and to make joint liberalities, proposing new standards for the official representation and activity of the queen. In these testimonies, there is not any mention of marital crises within the royal couples.
Marital crises within the Ptolemaic couples were not excluded, but their importance and political consequences were certainly emphasized by the literary sources, maybe because the ancient authors preferred to direct the reader’s attention towards private problems in the royal family than towards political changes favourable to the queens.

The book brings together the reflections of ten specialists on Greek and Roman power couples from the 4th century BC to the 1st century AD. It is focused on the birth and the development of the “ruling couple” in the Hellenistic Greek kingdoms and in Rome between the end of the Republic and the beginning of the Empire. Through some emblematic examples, this book analyses the redistribution of public and private roles within these couples, examines the sentimental bonds or the relations of domination established between partners, and highlights some common points between ancient and contemporary power couples.
