Boulder • Stream(s): • • The Mediterranean has often been considered a transitional space-a rite of passage, an interval between borders, a route to conquest. But what of the Mediterranean as a context and a framework in itself? How might notions of 'man,' 'nation,' 'empire,' 'center,' and 'periphery' be reformulated when looked at from the perspective of the sea? What does comparative literature look like when the Mediterranean is viewed not only as a sea in which cultures exist and literatures are produced but also as a context or a framework in which they can be reassessed? This seminar seeks to center the Mediterranean as a site of imaginative generation beyond the borders that have traditionally been imposed upon it. It is oriented around the lives, cultures, and histories that the sea has both made possible and foreclosed. Bound up with desires for exploration and escape, technologies of seafaring and surveillance, and the rise and fall of civilizations, lives ranging from Odysseus to Cervantes to Alan Kurdi have ebbed and flowed in rhythm with the sea. This seminar proposes the Mediterranean as their condition of possibility. The Mediterranean has served as a reservoir of concepts and images for writers, artists, and thinkers as they have responded to the appropriation of the sea for imperialist, colonial, and fascist agendas throughout centuries. How do these concepts and images help them attain new insights about themselves and the world? Like literature, the Mediterranean has a tendency to dissolve borders. What does the literature produced in and around the Mediterranean-which is to say, world literature-look like beyond the borders of nation, empire, and language? How do artists and thinkers help their readers reenvision specific urban centers, port cities, islands, and local sites when they situate them in a Mediterranean context? What are the new axes of comparison that emerge through such a recontextualization? How does the Mediterranean create new bridges among national literature, area studies, and comparative literature? We invite paper proposals that engage with the aforementioned questions. Possible topics include: • Memory and politics in the Mediterranean • Mediterranean as a site of disciplinary reconfigurations • 'Centers' and 'peripheries' of the Mediterranean and their lack thereof • Port cities and islands • The longue durée and other temporal scales • Theories of Mediterranean literature • Trans-Mediterranean connections • Mediterranean chronotopes • The Black Mediterranean For any queries about the seminar, please contact the organizers C. This essay focuses on the representation of space in Mediterranean
crime fiction of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. The question is whether we can speak of a kind of heuristics in Mediterranean crime fiction of the last decades, particularly in the filigree of representations and perceptions at the spatial level. To this end, the contribution focuses on two authors, namely Amara Lakhous and Jean-Claude Izzo in whose work the multiethnic component plays a significant role. The first aspect analyzed concerns the presence of heterotopias
(Foucault 2020, 11–28) as expressions of a state of crisis and a form of noncommunication.
This is the case in "Scontro di civiltà per un ascensore a piazza Vittorio"
(2006) by Amara Lakhous in which one of these small-scale counterspaces – an elevator – plays a particularly significant role as one focal point of the diverse and multiethnic landscape of a Mediterranean metropolis – Rome – that can call itself such despite not enjoying a direct outlet to the sea. The second area of investigation concerns the presence of smooth and striated spaces (Deleuze and Guattari 2003, 663–697) which, in their constant variation in the face of ever new impediments or infractions – in a singular analogy with crime, which also constitutes an obstacle or a kind of interruption to the normal flow of life – are at the center of Jean-Claude Izzo’s trilogy dedicated to Marseille and Fabio Montale.
In Izzo’s three novels, the Mediterranean is connoted both as a space of crisis and of communication – that is, as a large-scale heterotopia – while Marseille, in its distinct offshoots, appears as a surface in constant redefinition, in which striations relentlessly oppose – in a hegemonic key – forms of deterritorialization.

Mediterranean studies flourish in literary and cultural studies, but concepts of the Mediterranean and the theories and methods they use are very disparate. This is because the Mediterranean is not a simple geographical or historical unity, but a multiplicity, a network of highly interconnected elements, each of which is different and individual. Talking about Mediterranean literature raises the question of whether the connectivity of Mediterranean literature can or should be limited in some way by constructing an inside and an outside of the Mediterranean. What kind of connectivity and fragmentation do literary texts produce, how do they build and interrupt references (to the real, to fictional forms of representation, to history, but also to other texts and discourses), how do they create and deny communication, and how do they engage with and reflect literary and non-literary concepts of the Mediterranean? These and other questions are considered and discussed in the over twenty contributions gathered in this volume.

The essay proposes a selective reading of the beginnings and the endings of the four prose texts of Contemplazione della morte (1912), in their connections, according to the different typologies and functions. Attention is given to the two dedicatees, Pascoli and Bermond, together with natural landscapes and atmospheric notations, as well as to the importance given to silence and to the vitalistic image of the "cagna", which in the finale imposes itself on that of the drowned man.

This paper analyses the exploratory and evolutionary path of the protagonist Jules – i.e. all her perceptions in the relationships with men and women – in the light of the dissolution of the postmodern self and the nomadism as a phenomenon of change in terms of gender, role and behaviour. In this sense, the categories of masculine and feminine in their narrative figurations, the materiality of the body and the physical and sexual instincts of the young Jules are investigated, demonstrating how this 1964 novel by Milena Milani seems to implicitly anticipate the process of giving a new meaning to the feminine subjectivity that was to accelerate remarkably from the 1970s onwards.

This contribution aims to investigate the reception of the “Gomorra brand” (Benvenuti 2017) in Germanspeaking countries. In particular, it focuses on the ways in which the series and some of its peculiar aspects – the decadent urban landscapes, the social context permeated by organised crime, the power of attraction exercised by male and female characters and the authenticity of the narration – have been received, and how they have contributed to convey specific images of Neapolitan identity associated, in some cases, with pervasive stereotypes and cliches. The contribution relies exclusively on the analysis of online documents(among which, in-depth articles that appeared in newspapers with a wide or sectorial circulation, including Der Spiegel and Die Zeit) in order to analyse the effects produced by the tv series Gomorrah (together with its iconic building, the Vele di Scampia), in disseminating distinct images of Neapolitanism and, ultimately, of Italianness through an exchange b...

The proposed project encompasses the launching and the first 5-year operational period of an Open Access scientific journal Colloquium dealing with language studies (the new philologies) across the various languages we support through our four Language Departments (Anglistik&Amerikanistik, Germanistik, Deutschdidaktik, Romanistik, and Slawistik). The journal is to be published in all of the languages of our respective institutes and aim to be a fully peer-reviewed publication with aspirations to high-quality international status. It will encompass four philological thematic strands: Linguistics, Literature, Culture, and Didactics. The journal is in one way intended to specially support our early-career researchers (including the many early-career external colleagues), but in order to ensure a substantial amount of quality contributions our journal will of course also welcome other types of authors locally and internationally (focusing especially on the extended Alpen-Adria Extended ...

Mediterranean studies flourish in literary and cultural studies, but if you look at the numerous publications on the subject, it is striking that the concepts of the Mediterranean and the theories and methods used in these are very disparate. Therefore, we encourage the contributors to ask what kind of connectivity and fragmentation literary texts produce, how they build and interrupt references (to the real world, to history, but also to other texts and discourses), how they create and deny communication, and how they take up and reflect literary and non-literary concepts of the Mediterranean.
The book will be published by De Gruyter as a peer-reviewed publication (double blind and open access). If you are interested in participating we ask you to send us an abstract by June 1, 2020.

Mediterranean studies flourish in literary and cultural studies, but if you look at the numerous publications on the subject, it is striking that the concepts of the Mediterranean and the theories and methods used in these are very disparate. Sometimes research focuses more on representations of the Mediterranean-landscape, history, cities-and sometimes more on the origins of authors or their cultural affiliations to the Mediterranean. Sometimes it is more a matter of overarching themes that are of current interest beyond the Mediterranean-migration, questions of inter-and transculturality, post-colonialism-and sometimes very specific aspects such as the Crusades or Mediterranean cities. Of course, we appreciate this fascinating diversity of important questions and topics; nevertheless, we believe that reflections on the foundations of this diverse research are essential to give a clear profile to Mediterranean literary studies. It is our conviction that this profile should be based upon the specific conditions and characteristics of (fictional) literature.
