In ihrem Beitrag „Arbeitsbedingungen verbessern!

According to dogma, documenta sought reconciliation for the evils done by the faschist exhibition “Degenerate Art” (1937). documenta was furthermore an attempt to reintegrate into the international arts community: Post War, post National-Socialism. documenta, as we know, was clearly not fond of Socialism. But was it beyond Nationalism?
This article employs published and archival sources from the documenta-archive, in order to understand if and how the legacy of nationalism impacted upon a show whose purportedly “universalist” selection criteria served to erase cultural specificity. The way in which nationalist conceptions served to solidify perceptions of center and periphery is shown through a biographic sketch of the sole participant hailing from a former colony: Antonio Corpora (b. 1909 in Tunis - d. 2004 in Rome).

The Gulf Labor artist coalition critically engages the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi and other museum developments on Abu Dhabis Sa'adiyat Island. International protests, exhibitions, journalism even boycotts have been employed in order to enforce effective protections on the building sites for migrant workers laboring under slavery conditions today. This paper examines Gulf Labor as forming part of a so called third wave of Institutional Critique.
It claims that a) the Gulf Labor exhibition 52 Weeks succeeded in establishing an extra-institutional space and that b) the boycott considerably shaped themes, contents and artistic positions included in the Guggenheim's collection.
Through Gulf Labor's sustained effort and its wide collaboration with civil society organizations the initiative has successfully anchored a seemingly art-world specific topic in wider discourses about human rights and globalization.
This paper originates from the "Situating Global Art Conference", held February 12-14 2015, Berlin, Germany.

This Master Thesis was submitted at the University of Bonn in 2011 and published as part 9 of the series Bonner Islamwissenschaftliche Hefte (BIH) in 2013.
What do we mean when we speak about "global" art? Can we draw methodologically from "global artists" knowledge? How would that possibly re-shape future knowledge production?
CHAPTER ONE establishes a history of the concept of "Global Art". CHAPTER TWO traces the history and methodology of qualitative research interviews in the three disciplines of sociology, ethnology and art history in order to arrive at a methodologically grounded tool. It proposes Artist Interviews as Expert Interviews in order to probe art-historical and art-sociological concepts. CHAPTER THREE situates the oeuvre of Egyptian photographer Osama Dawod with regard to both local and global discourses as a prelude to the mutual reflection of the macro-theoretical concept of "global art". IN CONCLUSION we arrive at the question of an ethics of doing communication in arts and research. How do we invite collaboration, how do we treat each other as guests and hosts on a global plane that is far from being free of hierarchies and power imbalances.

(English summary on http://mrlnslzbrg.wordpress.com/)
Ausgangspunkt:

Co-Organizer and Host of the Panel: "Localities, Positions and Power"
CFP: For the 2017 DGS Sociology of Arts meeting in Berlin, we invite papers researching the ways that cities shape art at different levels. The goal of this event is to share research and invoke dialogues about the ways that the urban is important for understanding the production, evaluation and distribution of art. Our aim is to develop an arts sociology that takes seriously place, space and cities. There are numerous collectively shared ideas about the importance of cities in art. Social scientists, historians and journalists alike envision particular cities in particular historical moments as key sites where the arts are flourishing, since at least the 20th century cities have been part of the collective imaginary of where art is produced, evaluated and distributed. Examples are legion: from the emergence of new forms and avant-garde art, such as literature or visual arts in prewar Paris, to popular music in 1980-90s Manchester, or the visual arts in New York City and Berlin and film in Los Angeles and Mumbai today. Cities have cultural, symbolic and material significance in the arts. If cities are the sites of or important nodes within art worlds, art systems, fields, networks, etc, we want to turn our attention to how, when and why this is significant. Indeed, even in an era of 'global culture' or a 'global art world', in which mobility is increasingly the norm for many in the arts, specific locales still hold significance. In the visual arts, art worlds and cities such as Istanbul, Mumbai, Tokyo and Sao Paulo are written about as 'emerging' in the global art world, with scholarly and journalistic attention paid to the development of trans-local communities embedded within global networks. The changing inter-, intra-and trans-urban constellations of art, the ideas about these cities, as well as sociological analyses of being an artist or art mediator in these places and networks, are of interest here. As urban scholars continue to urge a non-reductionist approach to understanding the specific social, cultural, economic, architectural and spatial conditions of cities, we ought also to take seriously the urban contexts of art. Cities matter. It is here that people gather, that early career artists form careers, that mobilities pass through, and where important hubs and nodes in increasing global connectivity are anchored. While much research has been conducted on the ways that the arts shape cities, including gentrification, creative cities, street art and public art research, this conference seeks to

The emerging image depicts a network of former Nazi party members at the head of local and regional politics and cultural institutions mingling in the framework of the limited liabilitiy company which has organized the exhibition series since 1961. A network allowing future insights into the unacknowledged legacy of Nazi methods in the management of cultural institutions, in Kassel and beyond and well into the 1980s.

How - do I ask in this essay for the Manifesta program al-Moutawassit - do we invite Kairos to our side when instituting formats in arts education?
Al-Moutawassit - cultural Education as a meeting point was a three week intensive on- and offline program organized by Manifesta 13 in 2020. It connected art educators with different practices from France, Tunisia, Morocco and Algeria. My text is a reflection on the successes and failings of two formats I instituted within this framework: the séance de silence and the séance d'écoute.

Toulu Hassani's paintings and sculptures are deeply rooted in abstract, post-minimal art practices. This essay examines possible traces of the heritage of Islamic art in her works both based on the artist's country of birth (Iran) and the affection of abstract painters canonized in the European Modernist tradition (like Paul Klee and M.C. Escher) with Islamic heritage in the Mediterranean. What derives from this double analysis is an understanding of Toulu Hassani's art as sharing a deep common interest of several strands of abstract art in the visualization of a mystical experience of "flow".

For the conference "Space Oddities - on the reception of the Odyssey in visual arts and culture from the late 18th century until today" I traced how the curators of the Athenian EMST-collection - as it was presented at Museum Fridericianum during documenta 14 - used motifs from the Odyssey to communicate with their international audience. My forthcoming article deriving from this presentation goes a step further, presenting the Odyssey as Leitmotiv of documenta 14 as a whole that is determined by the EMST collection.

Worldly Companions bzw.
Konkrete Ansprechpartner*innen, Organigramm

Organization along the delineations of the nation-state prevails in the art world as a major interpretive and taxonomic strategy. Moreover, with the advent of globalization, art world discourses became obsessed with identity politics. Until today, artists considered marginal by not being white, male and Euro/American hardly stand a chance of unmarked recognition in the global art world. They are constantly ascribed a hyphenated identity – irrespective of their nationality, place of residence or what I want to call their “artistic socialization“. Especially “Arab“- and “Middle-Eastern“- artists have been called upon as “cultural ambassadors“ on behalf of the critics of the US-led War on Terror since 2001. My doctoral dissertation with the working title “Contesting Visions of “Arab” art” analyzes biographies and works by artists whose country of origin, as listed in the Documenta database is part of the Arab League. As an example of a major art-world institution, Documenta has claimed its status to represent “world-art“ since its inception in 1955. Focusing my research on the institutional framework of Documenta allows for multiple case-studies with different foci. My central questions regarding the “Arab“ – artists who participated in Documenta so far concern two aspects:
Within which curatorial concept have they been exhibited?
How can the portion of their work considered for Documenta be situated within their oeuvre?
Research for this dissertation draws on a broad range of sources, including published monographs, catalogs, articles and art criticism as well as archival sources and interviews. Case studies of documenta X (1997) and dOCUMENTA 13 (2012) trace the changing networks and art world discourses on which curators and artists alike could draw for their work. Individual artistic works on display during these two exhibitions are situated both within the framework of the curatorial concept and within the oeuvre of the artists.

Originally planned talk for the panel on: Strategies of Dealing with Alterity in Art.
On the upper floor of the "Old New Gallery" in Kassel during documenta 14 a strong succession of artworks together formed two alternative lines to follow as an art mediator with my groups. Both dealt with the absent voices of communities that didn't survive racist and fascist othering. Artworks by Sammy Balooji and Maria Eichhorn respectively attempted a restitution of memory through material remains. From Balooji to Pélagie Gbaguidi through Marina Giotti it was possible to address the language based discrimination and imposed hierarchies of colonial education from antiquity through the 19th century - the absent voices of those speaking the wrong language. From Eichhorn through Yael Davids and David Schutter to Erna Rosenstein spanned a line addressing the faschist theft of life and culture from the European Jewish communities.
Meanwhile at the New New Gallery the works by The Society of Friends of Halit, Forensic Architecture and Máret Ánne Sara visualized the ongoing legacies of racist and fascist politics and artivism directed against these continuities.

As art educator for documenta one has the priviledge to learn over 100 days with hundreds of individuals and dozens of groups in an accelerated mode. Talking about Uklański's "Real Nazis" meant to mediate intense feelings. The work comprises a sample of 270 C-Prints with portraits and an accompanying plaque with the names of those exhibited under the label "Real Nazis". A portrait of famous German artist Joseph Beuys within the sample, the works proximity to the permanent museum installation of Joseph Beuys "The pack" and its central position in the exhibition over all made it a highly divisive artwork for the 90% of documenta's German speaking public.
Talking about "Real Nazis" became a focal point for collective processes of unlearning: discussing interpretive impulses, accomodating a wide array of knowledges connecting to the portraits, changing individual perspectives and generating new narratives within every group I acoompanied plus the many people who spontaneoulsy joined our discussions showed a transformative potential in the specific context of its situation at documenta 14.

This presentation formed part of the documenta-studies research seminar HOW?WOW!WOW!... On July 17th 2019:
The vast majority of research on documenta squarely omits the question what it's founding figures did during the National Socialist regime from 1933-1945. Historiography so far has focused on the post-war positionings of it's actors; It furthermore relied largely on re-inventions of biographies through self-testimonials and argumentative strategies put into place by the de-nazification processes initiated by the Allied occupational forces after 1945. Tracing the prominent example of Werner Haftmann's path through the fascist institutions by means of his published writings as well as published and unpublished archival sources is exemplary in revealing the careful re-positionings and omissions that our current art historiography has to grapple with.
For the forthcoming article I have gathered secondary sources as well as located major primary sources on all 55 members of the documenta organizational bodies who were old enough to have become active members of the NSDAP before the end of WWII. While this research can by no means ascertain the motivations behind most individual choices it does however reveal the sheer scope of involvement, collaboration and later silcencing, that asks for a major revision of the historiography of the exhibition series.

While this research can by no means ascertain the motivations behind most individual choices it does however reveal the sheer scope of involvement, collaboration and later silcencing, that asks for a major revision of the historiography of the exhibition series.
