In this paper are presented the results of some analyses of a two storeyed masonry wall, carried ... more In this paper are presented the results of some analyses of a two storeyed masonry wall, carried out by a non-linear step by step procedure purposely studied to analyse masonry walls, reinforced or not reinforced, subjected to horizontal forces in their middle plane. The same wall was also analysed by a laboratory test, carried out on a full size model, by the Operative Research Unity of the Department of Structural Mechanics of Pavia University [6]. A comparison between the mathematical model and the laboratory test, together with some parametric analyses carried out on the mathematical model are also presented.

In this paper the efficiency is evaluated of the main approaches to the analysis of masonry struc... more In this paper the efficiency is evaluated of the main approaches to the analysis of masonry structures, subjected to horizontal actions, starting from the approximate methods up to specifically studied methods of automatic calculation. First of all the topicality of the "Limit Analysis" theory is evaluated, pointing out the benefits and the limitations of the methods based on its "Static" and "Cinematic" theorems. Then, after a critical analysis of general pourpose procedures following the F.E. approach used in non-linear analyses of masonry structures, a new method specifically studied to analyse masonry walls subjected to static equivalent actions is shown.

Abstract In the paper an idea to use a deformable polymer material for the joint between R.C. fra... more Abstract In the paper an idea to use a deformable polymer material for the joint between R.C. frames and masonry infills is presented. As an early step of testing the idea, experimental tests of the polymer in monotonic uniaxial tension at different load rates are performed and analyzed. The load rates range from very fast (8.3 mm/s) to very slow (0.00083 mm/s). The material exhibits a very strong strain rate effect and viscous behavior. In the second part of the paper a numerical model is developed and implemented into a finite element to simulate the results of the tests. The model is based on a new family of strain measures, called the Darjani-Naghdabadi strain measures and a classical viscosity formulation. Almost perfect model predictions up to collapse at 50-150% elongation are obtained by using calibration based on minimization of error.

In the paper, an attempt to alleviate the problem of premature damage to infills by using flexibl... more In the paper, an attempt to alleviate the problem of premature damage to infills by using flexible polymers between the infill and the r.c. frame is presented. The flexibility of the polymer could serve to reduce the stress concentrations and thereby reduce damage to infills on one hand, and provide a high amount of damping and ductility on the other. Its efficiency is tested by cyclic shear tests carried out on a large-scale model. In the numerical part, the material is modelled using for the purpose developed finite element. The finite element with the new hyperviscoelastic constitutive model was coded in the AceGen/AceFEM program.

This paper deals with the problem of seismic strengthening and of the restoration of the structur... more This paper deals with the problem of seismic strengthening and of the restoration of the structures of the St. Francis, St. Claire, and St. Mary of the Angels Basilicas. To accomplish this objective it was necessary to carry out an historical survey, accurate direct observation (intergrated with investigation) and some mathematical models which can be divided into two groups: in the first phase global models of the Basilicas were made and analysed, within elastic field, under seismic actions (applied as static equivalent),to verify the position of the critical zones; in the second phase, to test the interventions designed, some local mathematical models, with non-linear behaviour, were carried out with static equivalent seismic actions applied step by step. The interventions include original solutions, respecting the high artistic value of the buildings.

Emergencies like post hurricane or earthquake need of buildings quick and easy to build. These bu... more Emergencies like post hurricane or earthquake need of buildings quick and easy to build. These buildings have to be great open spaces in order to host as many people as possible. These buildings can be non-temporary because they are useful for one, two years or more. For this reason, they have to be designed like permanent buildings. This exclude a great number of typologies as for example inflatable structures. The typology suggested is cables net and membrane roofs with hyperbolic paraboloid shape. These typology permits to cover very large span and it is built easily and quickly. In order to encourage a sustainability approach to build, the paper promotes recent developments in the field of material engineering that have allowed for the use of natural materials for common structural elements instead of traditional materials such as steel or concrete. In this context, hemp is a very interesting material for structural building design. This paper proposes the use of hemp cables for roofs with hyperbolic paraboloid cables nets, which sees the use of a sustainability material for structure thus having a very low environmental impact in terms of structural weight. The paper discusses five different plan sizes and two different hyperbolic paraboloid surface radius of curvatures. The cable traction, which gives the cable net stiffness, was varied in order to give a parametric database of structural response. Three-dimensional geometrically nonlinear element analyses were carried out on different geometries and a parametrization of the borders structures of anchorage is given.
