‘The Person at the Crossroads: A Philosophical Approach’ brings together scholars from around the world who share a common interest in the nature and activity of the human person. Personhood is examined from a variety of perspectives, both philosophical and theological, drawing on the rich traditions of both Western and Eastern thought. Readers will find themselves on a journey through the works of past and current scholars including, Confucius, Augustine, David Hume, Immanuel Kant, Horace Bushnell, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Michael Polanyi, Rudolf Carnap, Karol Wojtyla, Erazim Kohak, and many other authors who touch upon the personalist tradition and the human person. This volume will be of particular interest to readers interested in the nature of the human person, as well as philosophy and theology undergraduate and graduate students and professors teaching in these areas.

The recent developments in robotics claim for a philosophical approach
to the current and future relationship between persons and robots. Our aim is to look for some hints in the facets of the debate in order to define the ontology of these entities which in the long run could make decisions or act autonomously. First, we will question which features human beings and artificial beings share, focusing on the concepts of ‘person’ and ‘legal personality’, investigating the philosophical work of thinkers as Kelsen, Scarpelli, Radin, Wolff and Nèkàm. The urgency of the (philosophical) matter is confirmed by the concept of “electronic person” proposed in the motion that the Committee on Legal Affairs presented for a European Parliament resolution with recommendations to the Commission on Civil Law Rules on Robotics in order to establish rules to arrange the relationship between robots and human beings.

The paper deals with the controversial problem of the definition of creativity in Artificial Intelligence research, in the recent framework of machine learning. The starting point is to consider in which sense creativity is considered in the recent researches in Artificial Intelligence, highlighting that there is not just one kind of definition researchers refer to. Then we will consider creativity in scientific theories and language.

During and after the last electoral campaign for the general election in Italy, the national and foreign media have pointed their attention towards the communication strategies adopted by the Five Star Movement, the League and the Democratic Party. The unexpected government contract between the Five Star Movement and the League has dealt with new goals and relationships between the government, citizens and political opponents. The essay draws on the enunciative strategies adopted
by Matteo Salvini and Luigi Di Maio, since they serve as leaders of the parties that came to power, soon after the general elections and before the European elections. Particularly, the semiotic analysis focuses on the discourses and languages of the leadership, introducing the issue of the continuous political crisis and the relevance of the government contract.

The main theme of this paper is food storytelling in Downton Abbey, the popular heritage drama aired from 2010 to 2015 on the British network ITV. Dish preparation and meal consumption are relevant to Downton Abbey and to the story of the Crawleys, which begins with breakfast on 16 th April 1912 and finishes with a wedding reception on New Year's Eve in 1925. I will try to answer to the following question: what does food communicate and which kind of scenario does it define? Rituals, spaces and discourses on food, meals and taste will be considered in their original entanglement with the definition of roles and power in British society between aristocrats and commoners.

The recent technological developments in robotics and AI bring a greater sense of urgency to the ethical dimension of the future relationships between persons and social robots. To define this relationship, we claim that there is the need to reflect upon the concept of action. First, we will describe von Wright's account of non-causal theory of human action, then we will focus on the actions performed by the so-called social robots. We will point out that the actions of social robots are always planned and predictable while human actions are characterized by creativity. Moreover, spontaneous human actions deal with the spontaneous origin and creation of social institutions.

The theory of extended mind developed by Chalmers and Clark assumes that the boundaries of the mind do not coincide with the boundaries of the human brain. In this sense external supports can be considered as key components of our mental activities. One of the most important questions which arises from such theory is the following: what are the real boundaries of the extended mind? In this essay we try to answer this question regarding the aesthetic experience. In particular, we claim that a perceptual event turns into an aesthetic event due to the role of the external language, which extends an aesthetic event in an artificial implant.

The debate on the state of the art of philosophy in Italy shows many differences from the three main currents of contemporary philosophy, namely deconstructionism, critical theory, and analytic philosophy. On one hand, the philosophical stance towards language, and on the other hand, the strong separation between science and philosophy are the distinctive features of the Italian thought. In particular, philosophy of language shows a fragmented framework in which current researches are an example for future studies on language and human nature. The basic idea behind the Philosophy of Language in Italy is that language has a biological and social nature. The aim of this paper is to give an account of the range of " bio " through a dialogue between philosophy and neuroscience. I will review the Italian research on mirror neurons with particular attention to the developments in embodied simulation proposed by Vittorio Gallese. I will underline the philosophical aspects of this neuroscientific theory, providing some remarks on intersubjectivity, intentions, and language. Finally, I will suggest future joint studies in neuroscience and the philosophy of language.

Is it possible to conceive a semiology of the art? The question is set with the intent to take back an example that Luís Jorge Prieto uses in 1971 in Notes pour une sémiologie de la communication artistique. Starting from his work, Prieto makes a working hypothesis on the semiology of artistic communication in which some arts like dancing cannot be placed. Later, Prieto maintains the art as an invention and the work of art as a mental object. My aim is to verify these two conceptions of the artistic phenomenon taking as example argentine tango as a partner dance based on improvisation. I will show that argentine tango is a non-choreographic art whose work of art is realized in the same moment in which dancers conceive it.

The aim of this paper is to reshape the mind-body problem in the light of the theory of the extended mind and its relationship to recent technological developments. Rereading the mind-body problem implies returning to Descartes, as it is well-known that the crucial theoretical point of the contemporary philosophy of mind is the refusal of Dualism. Despite the philosophers of mind, on one hand, Descartes wasn't that is usually called dualist, and, on the other hand, reductionism does not work the way recent researches have shown. Taking seriously the relationship between the human mind, body and the technological developments we are facing, we claim for an account of the mind-body problem which includes biological aspects and society, such as the place in which technology reveals itself.

There are many ways in which the human experience manifests itself in the intertwinement between day-today reality and reality experienced through a medium. Carrying out an experiment, creating a work of art, and posting something on a blog are examples of this variety. In day-today life, the action we perform most frequently is speaking. Our goal is to show that, on one hand, speaking is an action that is creative; on the other, it is an operation that requires commitment. It is possible to present one modality of the act of speaking starting with the construction of consensus. Starting with The New Rhetoric introduced by Perelman, we will examine the 'personal' nature of discourse and introduce the concept of commitment, interpreted as one's relationship with the other and the world. Far from representing subjectivity, commitment is bound to creativity, with an openness to collectivity. Having set a precedent for creativity and commitment as characteristic of discourse, we will consider the 'I'-'you' alternation in social networking platforms.

The main topic of the article is the reconstruction of the concept of creativity through the reflections of Tullio De Mauro and Emilio Garroni. The possibility of understanding creativity will emerge, on the one hand, as a willingness to change the code and on the other, as an adaptive function. I will try to show that there is a notion of creativity which is not general but plausible from an evolutionary point of view. Creativity becomes a survival strategy which guarantees humans and non-humans to be adequate and innovative in (almost) all circumstances. The actuality of the notion of creativity, so re-determined, can be seen in relation to the concept of cooperation, opening the future possibility of rethinking the scope of linguistic creativity within an interdisciplinary framework that takes into account the recent results of research in the field of comparative psychology.
