His works are influenced by his Egyptian, Italian, and Jewish origins, as well as his commitment to Freemasonry and Nationalism. This book, after
reconstructing his activities and his life also on the basis of previously unpublished documents, presents three of his plays composed in Egyptian Arabic: al-ʿAlīl (The Sick Man), al-Ḍarratayn (The Rival Wives), Mūlyīr Miṣr wa-mā yuqāsīhi (The Egyptian Molière and What He Suffers).

Attraverso i suoi racconti ironici ma surreali, dalle ambientazioni a tratti oniriche, lo scrittore siriano non solo dipinge con maestria uno spaccato della società araba di oggi, ma offre al suo lettore spunti di riflessione sull’attualità della società “globale”. Come un porcospino i racconti pungono il lettore con gli aculei di un sarcasmo a volte amaro, inducendolo a meditare che, in fondo, di fronte al vuoto, non c’è proprio nulla di cui ridere.

Wasim Dahmash nasce a Damasco l'8 ottobre 1948 da una famiglia palestinese appena fuggita da Lidda, invasa dalle truppe israeliane. Dopo gli studi letterari a Damasco, finisce per stabilirsi a Roma dove ha insegnato alla "Sapienza" Università di Roma per lunghi anni come lettore di Dialettologia araba. Attualmente è docente di Lingua araba all'Università di Cagliari. Il Corso di arabo contemporaneo introduce il principiante assoluto alla lingua attualmente uffici... more Il Corso di arabo contemporaneo introduce il principiante assoluto alla lingua attualmente ufficiale in ventidue Stati che si estendono dall'Iraq al Marocco: si tratta della lingua che scrittori e intellettuali del Novecento hanno elaborato a scopi letterari e scientifici, e che viene detta arabo standard contemporaneo. La conoscenza di questa lingua è indispensabile a chi voglia accedere alla cultura intellettuale di oltre duecentocinquanta milioni di arabi, nonché di un miliardo e mezzo di musulmani nel mondo, dall'Indonesia a buona parte dell'Africa subsahariana. L'arabo standard, formatosi a partire dagli inizi dell'Ottocento con la Nahda, o Risveglio culturale e letterario del mondo arabo, continua sostanzialmente quello che fu l'arabo classico, glorioso veicolo i cui pilastri sono rappresentati dalla poesia preislamica, dal Corano e dalla letteratura medievale. Rinnovato lessicalmente e stilisticamente, l'arabo standard è oggi uno strumento comunicativo ricco, duttile e affascinante, e nel contempo rappresenta la porta di accesso ai numerosi dialetti arabi, che, dall'Iraq alla Mauritania, esprimono culture locali talvolta molto diverse e caratterizzate. Starting in the 1960s with an economic growth (the so-called marḥalat al-ṭafra) driven by oil rev... more Starting in the 1960s with an economic growth (the so-called marḥalat al-ṭafra) driven by oil revenues, Saudi Arabia has witnessed a massive phenomenon of urbanization. The aim of this paper is to highlight the contradictions and paradoxes of this urbanization through the analysis of some works by two contemporary Saudi novelists : ʿAbduh Ḫāl (1962-) and ʿAzīz Muḥammad (1987-). However, center/periphery, inside/outside, village/city can be configured as dichotomous structures that can also be applied on a broader level, transcending Saudi national borders to be projected into the world literature system : from the rotation of Saudi literature around itself to the revolutionary motion of a ‘peripheral literature’ around a more prestigious literary center. And what then is the Greenwich Meridian of Saudi literature?

"L’arabo anziano" is a poem published in Cairo in 1869 and authored by James Sanua (1839 – 1912),... more "L’arabo anziano" is a poem published in Cairo in 1869 and authored by James Sanua (1839 – 1912), an Egyptian Jew of Italian origins who is considered as one of the pioneers of the Arab theatre and one of the first Egyptian nationalists. The poem is a precious testimony for the time Sanua spent in Livorno, Italy, and reflects his links with Freemasonry. This article intends to focus on the role of this poem for a comprehension of the rise of nationalism in James Sanua’s ideals and tries to shed light on his Italian experience through new unpublished documents found in the Historical Archives of the Jewish community of Livorno.

Since the first years of the 21st century, the presence of the dialect varieties of Arabic (the s... more Since the first years of the 21st century, the presence of the dialect varieties of Arabic (the so-called ʿāmmiyya or dāriǧa) outside the purely literary production increased a lot, and these informal varieties are nowadays frequently used in press, mass media, and obviously social networks.This article intends to offer a general overview on the modalities by which, at the beginnings of this (relatively) new phenomenon, the Arabic dialects penetrated in both the old and new media.After a focus on the graphic problems issued during the first attempts of written registration of the Arabic dialects (like in 3arabizi and e-darija), it deals also with the initiatives encouraged by some Moroccan magazines and newspapers (such as Ḫbār blādna, al-Amal, TelQuel and Nichane) that developed a highly controversial debate on the future of the linguistic policies in the country.
