ABSTRACT +++ UPDATED VERSION PUBLISHED IN APPLIED ONTOLOGY VOL.9, ISSUE 2, 2014+++ This version 1.0.0 (2014.04.29-10:45) of the OntologySummit2014_Communique was adopted by the community at the Ontology Summit 2014 Symposium (Arlington, Virginia, USA). It summarizes the activity of 4+ months of discussions of the Ontology Community (IAOA) and its collaborators. The Summit was co-organized by Ontolog, NIST, NCOR, NCBO, IAOA and NCO_NITRD. Further exhaustive information on the Summit and the organized events can be found here: http://ontolog.cim3.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?OntologySummit2014 and here: http://ontolog.cim3.net/OntologySummit/2014/communique.html. The Communique has been endorsed by 108 Communities' members (as of June 15, 2014).

Jean-Yves Béziau (Classical Negation can be expressed by One of its Halves)(Béziau 1999) has given an example of a phenomenon that people consider as translation paradox. We elaborate on Béziau's case, which concerns classical negation to the half of classical negation, as well as giving some relative background to this discussion. The translation in question turns out, not to deliver the new results but instead in the interests of illustrating the development of logic translation that widely discussed in various modern ...

Ontologies represent principled, formalised descriptions of agents' conceptualisations of a domain. For a community of agents, these descriptions may differ among agents. We propose an aggregative view of the integration of ontologies based on Judgement Aggregation (JA). Agents may vote on statements of the ontologies, and we aim at constructing a collective, integrated ontology, that reflects the individual conceptualisations as much as possible. As several results in JA show, many attractive and widely used aggregation procedures are prone to return inconsistent collective ontologies. We propose to solve the possible inconsistencies in the collective ontology by applying suitable weakenings of axioms that cause inconsistencies.

Abstract. We introduce ontological blending as a method for combining ontologies. Compared with existing combination techniques that aim at integrating or assimilating categories and relations of thematically related ontologies, blending aims at creatively generating (new) categories and ontological definitions; this is done on the basis of input ontologies whose domains are thematically distinct but whose specifications share structural or logical properties. As a result, ontological blending can generate new ontologies and ...

Abstract. Humans are able to describe specific spatial situations in various ways. The choice of particular descriptions is influenced by adequacy, general conventions, speaker preferences and alignments, dialogue strategies, and spatial circumstances. Such a description of a specific scene, however, can express different meanings in changing situations, ie, is context-dependent. We are therefore aiming at a general framework that provides formal representations of (i) the semantics of utterances,(ii) spatial situations, and ...

Abstract: The Distributed Ontology Language (DOL) is currently being standardized within the OntoIOp (Ontology Integration and Interoperability) activity of ISO/TC 37/SC 3. It aims at providing a unified framework for (1) ontologies formalized in heterogeneous logics,(2) modular ontologies,(3) links between ontologies, and (4) annotation of ontologies. This paper presents the current state of DOL's standardization. It focuses on use cases where distributed ontologies enable interoperability and reusability.

Abstract. Increasing availability of GPS-enabled devices technically enables a broad variety of people to participate in the volunteered geographic information (VGI) movement and to collect and share information about places and spatial entities. But in order to be useful, geo-data has to be correctly classified, and inexperienced users need assistance to be able to provide correctly classified information, because the classification system is complex and not always intuitive.

Abstract. The Distributed Ontology Language (DOL), currently being standardised within the OntoIOp (Ontology Integration and Interoperability) activity of ISO/TC 37/SC 3, aims at providing a unified framework for (1) ontologies formalised in heterogeneous logics,(2) modular ontologies,(3) links between ontologies, and (4) annotation of ontologies. This paper focuses on the LoLa ontology, which formally describes DOL's vocabulary for logics, ontology languages (and their serialisations), as well as logic translations.

Abstract We demonstrate a heterogeneity of representation types for breast cancer phenotypes and stress that the characterisation of a tumour phenotype often includes parameters that go beyond the representation of a corresponding empirically observed tumour, thus reflecting significant functional features of the phenotypes as well as epistemic interests that drive the modes of representation.

Workpackage 3 of the TONES project is concerned with automated reasoning support of ontology design and maintenance. As discussed in much more detail in the previous deliverable [LLS06], such support is needed to assist the ontology designer in carrying out a principled and systematic design-process, and to ensure that the resulting ontology is well-structured and useful for the intended application.

Abstract. We develop a web service for route finding in OpenStreetMap (OSM) following an activity-centred approach: the aim is not only to assist the user in travelling from A to B, but also to perform a series of specified activities along the way. This is particularly important eg for electric mobility, where activities can take place while the battery of the car is recharging. For specifying activities, our tool uses an ontology of spatially-located activities.

Methods for automated classification of chemical data depend on identifying interesting parts and properties. However, classes of chemical entities which are highly symmetrical and contain large numbers of homogeneous parts (such as carbon atoms) are not straightforwardly classified in this fashion. One such class of molecules is the fullerene family, which shows potential for many novel applications including in biomedicine.
