Throughout the history of American education, educators have been challenged with two primary aims related to school discipline and classroom management: (1) the short-term aim of managing and correcting student behavior and (2) the long-term aim of developing students’ selfdiscipline (Bear, 2005). Unlike management and correction of behavior, which is largely adultdirected, “selfdiscipline” involves students inhibiting inappropriate behavior and exhibiting prosocial behavior under their own volition. This requires social, emotional, and behavioral competencies that underlie selfregulated behavior. Over the years, approaches to school discipline and classroom management have varied greatly in their emphases on these two aims, and in the strategies and techniques used to achieve them. This is as true today as in the past, as now seen in differences between three popular approaches to school discipline and prevention of behavior problems: (1) the zerotolerance approach (see American P...

This case study describes the leadership of a school counselor in implementing positive behavioral interventions and supports (PBIS) in a low-income, diverse elementary school with a modest level of external supports. After initiating a grade-level pilot program, the school counselor partnered with university-based consultants to expand the PBIS initiative to all grades. This article presents data from multiple measures of implementation fidelity to illustrate the 5-year process of bringing school-wide PBIS to scale.

Staff training is a critical performance improvement objective within behavioral health care organizations. This study evaluated a systematic training program for teaching applied behavior analysis knowledge competencies to newly hired direct-care employees at a day and residential habilitation services agency for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Three content areas—measurement, behavior support, and skill acquisition—were trained in a group format using Powerpoint® presentations that featured didactic instruction, practice exercises, and video demonstrations. The employees completed an assessment of knowledge test before and after training in each content area. Across five training groups, the average correct posttraining test scores were consistently higher than pretraining test scores. A social validity assessment revealed that the employees judged the training program favorably along several dimensions. Issues pertaining to staff training and performance ...

This study investigated the classification accuracy of the Dynamic Indicators of Vocabulary Skills (DIVS) as a preschool vocabulary screening measure. With a sample of 240 preschoolers, fall and winter DIVS scores were used to predict year-end vocabulary risk using the 25th percentile on the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test–Third Edition (PPVT-III) to denote risk status. Results indicated that DIVS Picture Naming Fluency (PNF) and Reverse Definition Fluency (RDF) demonstrated very good accuracy in classifying students according to year-end vocabulary risk status. The DIVS measures also demonstrated stronger accuracy than demographic characteristics known to be indicators of vocabulary difficulties (socioeconomic status, English learner [EL] status, and sex). Combining PNF and RDF did not result in sufficient improvement in accuracy to justify administering both measures as opposed to just one. Further examination of predictive probability values revealed the potential for DIVS measur...

This column provides an example method for improving the consistency and quality of daily behavioral feedback provided to students in an alternative high school setting. Often, homeroom or advisory periods are prime points in the day for students to review their behavior from the previous day and set goals for a successful day to come. The method described outlines a planning process and strategy for building teams and teachers to use to establish a behavioral feedback routine, and a case example of the implementation of the routine.

This study evaluated the effects of a computer-based early reading program, Headsprout®, on accurate reading of word lists and connected text by a student with autism. The dependent measures were four word sets and four short stories that increased in difficulty. In the context of a multiple baseline design, the reading program was associated with improved reading accuracy across the
