This commentary engages with Napoletano et al.'s (2023) analysis of the relationship between society, nature, and 'autogestion' in the work of Henri Lefebvre. I present some reflections on what kind of relationship between humans and nature is envisioned with respect to political and social forms of governance after the advent of metabolic rift and, with Lefebvre, what kind of 'autogestion' regime can be imagined to begin to solve the ecological question. https://doi.org/10.1177/20438206231178823

As cities experience the effects of increasing inequalities, so social movements, scholars and even mainstream institutions are once again placing Lefebvre’s notion of the “right to the city” on the agenda. This new popularity often strips the concept of its political meaning, namely by approaching Lefebvre’s notion as juridical and as an aspect of a more general way of proceeding by planning, that has effects in terms of what is recognised as part of the political sphere, and of claiming the city. We aim to contribute to the debate through the discussion of a case study interested in a yearly festive event in central Lisbon. Drawing on Henri Lefebvre’s lexicon for an interpretation of popular involvement with public urban life, the article starts with an account of Lisbon’s Fordist socio-spatial segregation, and the neoliberal deepening of gentrification and profit-making urban regeneration. It then focuses on the Cape Verdean performative event Kola San Jon in the context of Lisbon’s Festas da Cidade, and the active involvement of inhabitants of Cova da Moura, a marginalised neighbourhood which has, over the years, drawn on cultural and civic activities for reclaiming a voice in the public space.

In this article, the author focuses on Henri Lefebvre's critique of urban functionalism, whose "founding father" is recognized as Le Corbusier. The aim is to explain how Lefebvre studied urban functionalism in order to develop an innovative critique of the Fordist modernity that developed in France following the Second World War. For the French sociologist, investigating urban functionalism thus meant investigating, from the spatial point of view, the way in which the capitalist development of the last century was modernized.

Henri Lefebvre's Critical Theory of Space offers a rigorous analysis and revival of Lefebvre’s works and the context in which he produced them. Biagi traces the historical-critical time-frame of Lefebvre's intellectual investigations, bringing to light a theoretical constellation in which historical methods intersect with philosophical and sociological issues: from Marxist political philosophy to the birth of urban sociology; from rural studies to urban and everyday life studies in the context of capitalism. Examining Lefebvre’s extended investigations into the urban sphere as well as highlighting his goal of developing a “general political theory of space” and of innovating Marxist thought, and clarifying the various (more or less accurate) meanings attributed to Lefebvre's concept of the “right to the city” (analysed in the context of the French and international sociological and philosophical-political debate), Henri Lefebvre's Critical Theory of Space ultimately brings the contours of Lefebvre’s innovative perspective—itself developed at the end of the “short twentieth century”—back into view in all its richness and complexity.

In the article the author highlights the main ways of the Lefebvrian sociological analysis conceived starting from the transformations of the city in the Fordist era: From the production of urban marginality, through the proliferation of precarious living in the France of the Sixties and Seventies, to recording the gradual disappearance of the urban–rural dichotomy, that goes into an authentic spatial hegemony of urbanization processes. The goal is therefore to highlight the “urban critical theory” of Henri Lefebvre, coming to discuss the famous meaning of “right to the city,” strongly interconnected with the concept of “city as an artwork,” that is the idea of an urban space intended as horizontal and common design by those who live and inhabit in it.

In this article we aim at enquiring about the importance of the concept of «utopia» in Henri Lefebvre's thought connecting it, on one side, with urban studies and, on the other side, with Lefebvre's scope to renew and update Marx and Engels's legacy. Our goal is to demonstrate in what way Lefebvrian urban studies are traversed by a new vision of the meaning of «utopia»; in fact we'll be able to understand how the political status of the «right to city» is incomprehensible without the reflection upon the utopia. Such a research is groundbreaking , since in the current secondary bibliography on Lefebvre there still isn't a systematic contribution on this topic. Our approach highlights the concepts that were developed by the French author from a historical-critical point of view. http://www.thomasproject.net/2_2019/
