The introduction and development of Freemasonry in America was a clear reflection and transposition of the situation of the Masonry in Europe of the 18th century and early 19th century. While the Spanish-American freemasonry was banned and persecuted by the Inquisition courts and the edicts of kings, the former British colonies followed the tradition and the example of United Kingdom, so the Masonic institution to which was important to politicians and the military achieved a rapid growth with the establishment of Grand Lodges in the thirteen colonies between 1778 and 1794. Furthermore, as the settlers moved westward the Freemasons settled in new areas, seeking permission to build lodges, the seed of future Grand Lodges, in the states that were forming. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to explain the Masonic expansion process in the Caribbean.

This paper deals with the establishment of freemasonry on St. Barthélemy, its connections to the Swedish Grand Lodge, its membership structure and activities mainly between 1797 and 1807. There are plenty of documents which describe ritual work, organisation and ideology. These connections have hitherto never been analysed and the paper will for the first time present source material from the Archive of the Swedish Order of Freemasons on the lodge La Sudermanie in the capital of the island, Gustavia.

If the "Caribbean space" was the place of implantation of an independent freemasonry carrier of its own history and also was during the 18th and 19th centuries a zone of confrontation between the Masonic European powers, the Grand Orient of France, and the Grand Lodge United of England. Under these tensions, the Grand Orient of France was concerned about establishing its authority over provincial lodges (at colonies in the Antilles and in port cities as Bordeaux, Nantes and Le Havre), while these lodges developed tools which seek to implement policies resistance and in turn, benefit the different social tensions for development. The Havre’s freemasonry established very close relations with lodges from Cuba and Santo Domingo. This study conveys how the position of the Masonic lodges and the development of national and liberal movements, accepting men of color, causing functions as platforms for these movements in the early 19th century. Finally, this article attests the importance of the "Caribbean space" in the history of Masonic international relations.

With a prosopographical study, this article proposes to present the characteristics of the French Masons, old colonists of Saint-Domingue who took refuge in Santiago de Cuba at the beginning of the 19th century. The principal lodges represented are The Réunion des Cœurs of Jérémie, that had 25 brothers in Santiago de Cuba, and the Réunion des Cœurs Franco-Américains of Port-au-Prince. The French Freemasonry directly influenced the Cuban Freemasonry. The study of the characteristics of the first French Masons allows better knowledge of the base of this influence.

The present study examines the links between two central institutions of Cuban society in the 1880s: the Liberal Party Autonomist and the United Grand Lodge of Colon of the Cuba Island. It discussed in the first part of the article the development and unification of Freemasonry in conditions of profound politicization of its members, while it based and founded the Liberal Party Autonomist. The second part focuses on a high political figure, whose Masonic leader embodies the close relationship between these two institutions, in spite of having been forgotten by history: Antonio Govín y Torres.

This paper explains how the relational dynamics between the Costa Rican government and the Catholic Church changed between the years 1865 and 1875, thanks to the development of Freemasonry in the country, because many politicians are associated with it. This paper will also discuss the policies and papal vision on Masonic associations, examine the spirit of association in the country, and the oppression from part of the Catholic Church directed toward Masonic institutions, which always responded with tolerance.

This paper studies the official origins of Masonry in El Salvador during the last third of the 19th century. It identifies who were its members, the roles that they played, roles in Salvadoran society, the socio-historical and political context in who founded the first Masonic Lodge in the country, and the anti-Masonic reaction of the clergy and the sectors of the country most identified with the conservative groups. To answer this question, it used Masonic, government, and ecclesiastical sources that are combined to reveal and to confirm that participation of the Salvadoran Freemasons in the turbulent years of 1871 and 1872, when they started the process of secularization of the Salvadoran State, which coincided with the founding of the Lodge Progress No. 5.

The article is aimed to analyze the relationship established by the Masonic Lodge Fernandina of Jagua Cienfuegos with Science and Culture, in the period covering the years between 1878 and 1902. The study was conducted from examining the activity developed for this lodge on the promotion and dissemination of advances in science and culture, as well as the work of its leading members in their professional and occupational fields. This activity was one of the pillars of the work of the lodge, which resulted in internal and external action, in professional life and not in its membership and the scientific and cultural services that the lodge gave to the Cienfuegos’s community in those years. In correspondence with this, Fernandina of Jagua became an active element in the process of setting up an attitude and relationship and the objective towards science and culture, in its members and other citizens of Cienfuegos.

The article reviews the process of emergence and development of modern Freemasonry and its first manifestations in Cuba. It aims to uncover and analyze the process of introduction and institutionalization of the Freemasonry in Cienfuegos’ city, one of the centers of Masonic activity in the country between 1867 and the first decade of the 20th century. The institutionalization of the Freemasonry in Cienfuegos was a result of “Pacto del Zanjón” and the implementation of the Spanish constitution of 1876, which established the Régimen de la Restauración. This process was characterized by a strong Masonic activity in the locality, which was expressed in the founding and the development of the six important socio-cultural Masonic lodges in the city.

The Society of Yorkin Federalists in their statutes and regulations is classified as Masonic Rite, but its name denotes a political purpose. With the analysis, one may pretend to contribute to the hermeneutics of the logic of the construction processes of thinking, the history of ideas, institutions and customs, in the paramasonic context; and fill the void left on historiography and historical perspectives to study these processes on the margins of normatives Masonic papers.

The 19th century generated changes in the colonial design, the abolition of slavery conceived the development of recruitment, which led to the influx of Asian workers to the Antilles. The need for adjustment and the memory of their homeland made the strengthening solidarity between them, thus emerging the first Chinese societies. Interested in the adaptation to the new conditions, these assumed Masonic attributes as the metaphorical and symbolic use of the compass and square, which generated a doubt about the linkage of these societies with the Freemasons.

This article implements the use of the information on cemetery tombstones as a historical source. This article, based on the study of lapidary from Foreign Cemetery’s San Jose, reconstructs the genealogy tables of Sephardic immigrant families. Most of these immigrants were originally from Panama and Caribbean islands such as Curacao and St Thomas, and immigrated in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. For generations, many of these families were associated with Freemasonry in Costa Rica.

This work attempts to show that the implementation of policies and the construction of ideologies are not solely dependent on someone's place of birth. We intend to explore the diverse field of Cuban civil society, which consisted of Spanish, Cubans, Germans, Americans, and other nationalities. Freemasonic lodges were built in a rebel society of hidden realities, such as the contradiction between Spanish and Cubans. In our case, we study a Galician, who walked in Cuba on the side of Cubans autonomists.

In nineteenth century Spain, freemasonry was the most prominent in Andalusia; however the political crises that occurred caused a decline in the presence of freemasonry. In the twentieth century, these political problems began to disappear, which led to the re-emergence of freemasonry in the region. Diego Martinez Barrio, the Grand Master of the South Regional and the Grand Spanish Orient, also played a major role in the restoration of freemasonry in the 1930's.

When we are going through the Cemetery of Columbus of the City of Havana, we attended part of the petrification of the “collective imagination” of the Cuban capital. In this paper we focus on the presence of Freemasonic symbolism, from some mortuary monuments presents in this hall. One of our goals was to record the presence of the lodges in the Cemetery and note the various ways in which its symbolism is present in their funerary monuments.

When questioning freemasonry and patriotism, we have to conceptualize the analysis of the evolution of patriotic identities. The case of the Belgian Revolution of 1830 is extremely clarifying in this regard. The reactions of freemasons demonstrate that patriotism and nationalism were not synonymous in 1830, the former being the love for one’s country, the latter being connected to a specific doctrine of the state. A process of nationalization of patriotism was clearly on the way but did not inspire all patriots. The definition of concepts such as nation, state, and nationalism differed strongly throughout the lodges. What state could offer the best perspectives for the Belgian nation, civic values, and love of freedom? According to a small majority of masons, the budding Belgian state offered the best political solution. But a significant portion of masons, referred to as Orangists, preferred the Dutch regime, which had governed them from 1815 to 1830. However, this did not mean that they were not Belgian patriots. This article analyses the shifting concepts of patriotism, nation, state, and nationalism at the start of the nineteenth century through the case study of Masonic reactions to the Belgian Revolution of 1830 and thus looks at the possibility of lodges acting as patriotic societies.

This article demystifies the Honduran Freemasonry speech, which sets the Honduran general Francisco Morazán Quesada as one of its leading members. This research notes that there is not historical evidence in the Masonic studies of the years 1898, 1942, and 1962. The documents presented above were foundations for the creation of the Francisco Morazán Lodge and the statement of Morazán as "worthy of Honduran Freemasonry" and a "Latin American Mason". Also, this work explains how Morazán, his contemporary writers, and his early biographers, never claimed that Morazán was a Freemason. Finally, it is transcribed in its entirety an article published in 1829 under the pseudonym "a soldier", which has been attributed to Morazán, and may give clues to his philosophical and revolutionary ideas.

It seeks to identify the representations created by the Luso-Brazilian society and their affiliation with the Masonic order. It also aims to visualize the manner in which the sociability engendered by the Freemason lodges eventually contributed to the construction of a political culture, in which the practice of debate, criticism, and representation were essential elements allowing us to have a better understanding of the final years of Portuguese colonial rule in the American continent.

This paper deals with the relationship between Freemasonry, Spiritualism, and urban workers in Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, in 1877 when the spiritual doctrine was introduced in the city by two professionals in Spain. In 1937, when, according to the installation of the Estado Novo in Brazil, the dictatorial regime implemented by President Getulio Vargas, began to restrict Spiritualism and Freemasonry in Pelotas. The regime even started to use force, since Masons were suspected of harboring Communist meetings and of being opponents of the system deployed by Vargas. Based on a literature review, we analyzed this relationship, trying to understand the role played by both Freemasonry and Spiritualism, along with the urban workers of that historical period.

Theosophy and vitalism appeared in Central America as complementary philosophical doctrines that gave rise to a social and political movement that I called spiritualism nationalist or Theosophical spiritualism. This movement produced several social movements, intellectual networks, and political parties which were represented as an alternative political-cultural and were reflected in a major regional project, as was the Central American unionism of the decades of 1920 and 1930. Therefore, this article has an objective to analyze and compare the thought of Porfirio Barba Jacob, Carlos Wyld Ospina, and Alberto Masferrer, whom were intellectual participants of political leagues, theosophical societies, political parties, and intellectual networks linked to the VHS. These people were founders of the principal continental political parties and important drivers of anti-imperialism in the region.

This article aims to settle some initial grounds concerning the research entitled Periodismo maçônico, política e opinião pública na Corte imperial brasileira (1870-1875), which is being developed in the scope of the Universidade Federal Fluminense History Post-Graduation Program (PPGH/UFF) with financial support by Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES). The presence of the Masonic press widespread through the Brazilian imperial Court is being investigated in this research, especially during the period between 1870 and 1875, trying to expose its role not only in the formation of the public opinion but also in the construction of the modern public sphere. At first, analyses are being made on the Brazilian Masonry official journals, which are stored in the sections of Periódicos and Obras Raras of Biblioteca Nacional, located in the city of Rio de Janeiro.

This paper analyzes the argumentative structure of Chilean Masonic historiography. In this article we analyze the two most important works ever written about this topic. As a hypothesis, we propose that the history of Freemasonry in Chile comes from different traditions, which emphasize the conflictive process with the Catholic Church, which provides a language to define themselves and their dual nature (Latin and British), that it obliges through history to legitimize their particular institutional and public participation.

This article seeks to show how and why the Freemasons practicing the Mexican National Rite in the 19th century secularized their tradition to respond to their social, patriotic, liberal and democratic pledges. It also shows how they substituted The Bible for the Constitution of the Mexican United States in their Freemasonic oaths, in a social context in which swearing by it was considered an anathema by Pope Pius IX and the Catholic clergy, and in an adverse Freemasonic context in which substituting The Book of the Law and participating in policy as Freemasons was contravening the London speculative tradition.

We present a statistical and historical analysis of the growth and decline of Cuban Freemasons during the period 1945-1980, based on our demographic study of this institution. Our work identifies, and quantitatively evaluates, important factors that have contributed, first to the growth, and then to the decline of its membership, in the first thirty years of the second half of the 20th century. At the same time, this research introduces the use of new analysis tools, successfully used in other areas of the humanities, and in the social sciences.

This article seeks to show that in New Spain Freemasonic lodges were authorized by the Grand Lodge of the State of Louisiana to be established in Veracruz, Campeche and Merida Yucatan between 1816 and 1820. The documentary evidence is presented for the first time with its transcription and translation, with a hermeneutic study of the political and Freemasonic context of the time period and some reflections on the composition of members of the three lodges.
