A common trend in Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) is to consider Information Systems exposing software as services. This current approach is not only applied to new software developments, but also it is related to the maintenance of legacy systems. Nowadays, a cornerstone of Information Systems are relational databases, which constitute meaningful sources of services. These services can provide database's information

The use of Web applications in order to provide data with an acceptable level of quality is currently of paramount importance for any enterprise that wishes its business processes to succeed. The adequate management of the corresponding data resources through the introduction of all those aspects whose aim is to monitor the levels of quality for the task in hand is therefore essential. We claim that the introduction of such elements and mechanisms should take place during the Web application development process. To the best of our knowledge, there is still a lack of methodological and technological proposals with which to design data quality aware applications in the field of Web application development. Based principally on the benefits provided by the Model Driven Web Engineering (MDWE), this paper proposes a metamodel and a UML profile (DAQ_UWE) for the management of Data Quality elements in the design of Web applications. The main objective is to provide the designer with the ne...

ABSTRACT Web based decision aids, embedded in modern telemedicine systems, are a tool to improve the skills of general practitioners and patients in sharing decision making. The aim of this paper is to present a new method based on data quality and fuzzy prototypes to provide a better and improved knowledge management framework for web-based decision aids. The proposed model is able to manage data quality dimensions on the decision-making process, moreover, the set of possible recommendations is not fixed over time to address dynamic scenarios. To illustrate the advantage of this mechanism, a preliminary experiment is carried out.

In these days, most organizations have realised, at last, so important as their software is their data, because it can be considered as an important asset present in all business organizational processes. Our aim is to optimise the data management process (DMP) in order to assure data quality. For this, we have just drawn a framework based on maturity levels

Nowadays, globalization of markets is a well-consolidated and an ever increasing growing fact. Within ICT field, one of the areas experiencing a faster growth is Global Software Development (GSD). GSD evolves the participation of multi-skilled people and the use of different managerial and technological resources, globally distributed, in order to obtain software with the greatest quality level as possible, but

ABSTRACT This paper presents the work to develop low cost movable/mobile community e-health system for rural area. The system is integrated VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal) technology with BWA (Broadband Wireless Access) to offer telecommunication and internet access. Ensuring 'connectivity' through this sort of initiatives will prove to be valuable for Rural areas such as three-level medical and health service networks as this connectivity may lead to e-learning, e-health etc. business or service initiatives and ultimately leading towards uplifting of communities by narrowing down the digital divide. The future perspective for the development of rural communications including the applications of e-health care will also be discussed.

ABSTRACT More and more companies and organizations currently consider that supporting the data in their Information Systems (IS) with an appropriate level of quality is a critical factor for making sound decisions. This has motivated the inclusion of specific mechanisms during IS development, which allow the data to be managed and ensure acceptable levels of quality. These mechanisms should be implemented to satisfy specific data quality requirements which are defined by a user at the moment of using an IS functionality. Since our ultimate research goal is to establish that these mechanisms are necessary for the management of data quality in IS development, we first decided to conduct a survey on related methodological and technical issues in order to determine the current state-of-the-art in this field. This was achieved through the use of a systematic review technique. This paper presents the principal results obtained after conducting the survey, in addition to the principal conclusions reached. ABSTRACT Databases are considered to be a valuable asset for organizations because they contain all those organizations’ persistent pieces of data. Both databases and the information systems that use them undergo erosion as a consequence of uncontrolled maintenance over time. However, when information systems evolve to become modernized versions of them, existing databases must not be discarded because they contain much valuable business knowledge that is not present anywhere else. Some of the software industry's current demands, such as time-to-market developments and the provision of software as services entail additional challenges in the reuse of legacy systems during software modernization. This paper addresses this problem and proposes a reengineering process that follows model-driven development principles to recover Web services from legacy databases. The Web services that are mined manage access to legacy databases without discarding them. Legacy databases can thus be used by modernized information systems in service-oriented environments. The adoption of this process is facilitated by the implementation of a support tool, which is used to conduct an industrial case study involving a real-life legacy database. The study demonstrates that the proposal reduces development efforts and improves the return of investment by extending the lifespan of legacy databases. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

BPMN is a notation for business process modeling through which it is possible to represent multiple characteristics of the analyzed business processes. However, although in a business process data play a fundamental role, it is still not possible to model data quality issues using BPMN due mainly to the lack of a specific notation. Since data quality is one of the main elements for achieving the business process goals, we aim to develop a comprehensive framework that supports the design of data quality-aware business ...

ABSTRACT As planning an R&D project named ORIGIN addressing global software development (GSD) foundations, the authors soon became aware of the need for all the participants to share the same vision of GSD projects. The authors therefore reached the conclusion that one of the first steps should be to set up a shared and consistent GSD project-related vocabulary, since this would help to improve communication between the five companies involved in ORIGIN. After analysing existing GSD initiatives, the authors discovered that none of them really satisfied our specific needs. As a consequence, they decided to develop a new ontology, which was named O-GSD. This paper describes not only how the ontology was developed -including the reasons which led us to include each term in O-GSD-but also its usage in real contexts -what allowed us to extract some insights to refine and validate the ontology. The main contribution of this paper is the O-GSD ontology which is used and to be used in real GSD projects with the aim of helping project managers to better describe their particular GSD projects.
