ABSTRACT The wide deployment of lower-cost wireless devices will significantly improve the productivity and safety of industrial plants while increasing the efficiency of plant workers by extending the information set available about the plant operations. The aim of this document is to analyze the functional requirements for a routing protocol used in industrial Low-power and Lossy Networks (LLNs) of field devices.

This paper presents a practical solution for the fence-line intrusion detection problem. The MEMS based sensor platform is introduced along with its WirelessHART networking capabilities. A Decentralized Sequential Hypothesis Testing algorithm is studied at the theoretical level before being applied to the problem at hand. Results from several deployments show 100% detection rates within one second of the intrusion. The system is presented as a viable replacement for much more expensive and less performant security systems.

ABSTRACT Recent standardization efforts on industrial low-power wireless communication technologies clearly bet for the Time Slotted Channel Hopping (TSCH) medium access control (MAC) layer as it proved to achieve 99.999% reliability while ensuring deterministic behavior. Standards such as WirelessHART, ISA100.11a, and IEEE802.15.4e rooted at the TSCH MAC layer are used to connect millions of industrial devices today, enabling the emergence of the Industrial Internet paradigm. At that point and due to the ultralow energy profile of TSCH networks, scavengers come into play, enabling autonomously powered control and monitoring systems on industries. However, putting these systems together requires a clear understanding of their behavior. Therefore, this paper presents a methodology and a model to reliably dimension scavenger properties to network requirements and application needs, allowing industries to optimize the adoption of that technologies while keeping technical risks low.

Recent results in the development of synthesis tools for Micro-Electromechanical Systems (MEMS) are presented. Single-objective and Multi-objective Genetic Algorithms (MOGA) have been successfully applied to several MEMS synthesis examples. Genetic Algorithms (GA) are compared to the optimization technique of Simulated Annealing (SA) in terms of robustness, effectiveness and speed. Results show that SA can synthesize valid designs faster then Genetic Algorithms but does not handle multiple objectives as well and tends to have more difficulty in finding the global optimum.
