he genus Albatrellus is another of the exceptional polypores, found growing on the ground. They are firm of texture and quite edible, when well cooked. Many of the 12 North American species exhibit blue or green coloring; all are mycorrhizal, associated with either hardwood or conifer species. Spore prints are white. Scutiger, Albatrellopsis, and Neoalbatrellus are genera of similar looking and/ or closely related groups. The entire group could benefit from further DNA analysis. A bright orange polypore with the distinct odor of cinnamon grows exclusively on heartwood of the decaying camphor tree, Cinnamomum kanehirai in Taiwan. The fungus Antrodia cinnamomea has been known scientifically as Antrodia camphorata, Taiwanofungus camphoratus, and Ganoderma camphoratum. Its local common name is Niu-Chang-Chih, Niu-Chang-Ku, or simply Chang-Chih. The large evergreen, broad-leaved tree was previously used for making furniture, and is now increasingly rare and protected. Locally, it is considered a present from heaven. Harvesting the fruiting body of A. cinnamomea entails rope climbing and headlamps to search inside the large, hollowed out trees. Historically, the fragrant fruiting body of A. cinnamomea was used as food and medicine for issues involving the liver and abdomen. It was chewed on, or decocted, for alcohol hangovers. In 1773, during the Ching Dynasty, a Dr. Wu-Sha investigated its properties, and soon found valuable applications for diarrhea, hypertension, itchy skin, viral infections, stomatitis, nephritis, hepatitis, liver cirrhosis and motion
