Regulations and policy initiatives concerning the non-authorized use of copyright contents in the Internet have generated in multiple countries strong lobby processes which include a media campaign between the different agents who consider these regulations essential for its interests. The copyrights coalition (CRC) argues that “un-authorized” uses of contents are a risk for their business and because of that they lobby for strong policies to protect rights holders. The Internet Service Providers (ISP) do not want to assume the supervision cost of internet users ́ behaviour although they would like to participate in the profits of the digital content business. Digital Rights Activists (DRA) believe that regulation proposals and policies threaten fundamental rights such as personal privacy, freedom of speech, free circulation of information and knowledge as well as the right of Internet access. In this paper we study the media visibility of different stakeholders who are part of this...

In this research note we present the first data collected in Spain on the political uses of the Internet including consumption of political information, reception of mobilizing stimuli through the Internet, and political participation online. We explore the data describing the indicators and then check whether it is possible to identify the same modes of online political participation that are usually distinguished in the offline arena. Our results show that online political participation stands as an independent mode, while at the same time some of its features may complement offline modes such as contacting.

Twitter is a social media expressly devoted to disseminate information and since its consolidation (about 2006), it is gaining users at an exponential rate. One of the main scholar thoughts in the literature of the Internet and politics is what Negroponte (1995) almost 20 years ago, called “the daily me”, and how the risk of specialized news consumption will favor a polarization on society (Farrell 2012, Sustein 2007, Conover et al. 2011 among others). Nevertheless, the impact of the Internet and in particular of Twitter on political difference is unclear (Brundige, Rice 2009). The main purpose of this paper is to analyze on Twitter the proximity to traditional media (newspapers, radio, TV) of political parties’ that have a contrary political filiation. We expect to assess if Twitter in an electoral process favors political fragmentation and polarization or can promote accidental exposure to political information (Tewksbury et al, 2001). We analyzed the case of the last Catalan Election (25th November of 2012), that was a very polarized electoral process. We obtained a sample of 45.000 tweets of the last week of the elections, we classify the most visible Twitter’s accounts according to their centrality level at the network, after that we coding the most visible accounts according to its political filiation, we analyzed the proximity of the accounts in respect to traditional media of another political filiation We observe that the majority of ties are between homophile members; however there are a few central brokers that favor accidental information exposure of parties accounts to traditional media with contrary political filiation.

A lot has changed since the first social network-based raising awareness campaigns became a political tool.

Communication among political actors has changed dramatically. We have had the time to look into many e-campaigns with a worldwide impact: USA’s President Obama based his successful electoral campaign leading towards the White House on social networks and e-activism. If it were my home played a major role in the crises when monitoring the evolution of the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. The “glimpses” project gave cameras to Palestinian child refugees to record their daily lives and eventually use them to report on rights abuses by Israel police. The Tweet your MEP initiative helps monitoring the work of Members of the European Parliament (MEPs). And, last but not least, Wikileaks has unveiled restricted USA diplomatic cables.

Analyzing the strategies that make an e-campaign work is critical to make political ideas spread faster and we have now enough historical perspective to draw some conclusions from past experiences and identify the strategies that work better.

Several authors argue that mass media are a fundamental part of the policy process to achieve public support and to legitimize the stakeholders' causes (Hajer 2009; Helms 2008; Newton 1999; Bennett & Entman 2001; Crozier 2007). They also... more

They also sustain how the media have an essential role in the formation of public opinion and in defining the public agenda (Walgrave & De Swert 2005; Walgrave & Aelst 2006; Dearing & Rogers 1996).

Current regulations and policy initiatives concerning the use of copyright contents in the Internet in multiple countries have generated strong lobby processes which include a media campaign between the different agents who consider these regulations essential for their interests. The entertainment industry argues that some uses of new technologies are a risk for their business and because of that they lobby for strong policies against piracy and the free use of content by search engines. Activists believe that regulation proposals and policies threaten fundamental rights such as personal privacy, freedom of speech, free circulation of information and knowledge as well as the right of Internet access. In this paper we focus our attention in the case of UK and Spain and the media visibility of actors who are part of this conflict. We assess if different sides in the conflict have the same media visibility in order for their statements to be followed by the public opinion. We draw upon a content analysis of documents on multiple online channels (organization web sites, news and blogs) and we do a network analysis in order to identify hyperlinks between the sites of the organizations involved in the conflict. In this way we identify the visibility of the policy agents on the Web and asses if there is a correlation between the visibility on the different online spheres (blogosphere, news sphere, web sphere, social network sphere). We find that visibility levels depend on the agents profile and the contextual features of the countries that we analyze.
