A broad, multifaceted scope of the volume draws the attention of readers to the problem of liminal spaces between cultures, genres, codes and languages of literary and artistic communication. The perspective of borderness proposed by orientalists, literary specialists, culture experts provide insights into multi-dimensional and heterogenic subjects and methods of consideration. The authors referring to, inter alia, comparative studies, theory of reception, intertextuality, transculturality of the East and West works touch upon themes such as coexistence, exclusion, crossing or the instability of borders. Also by taking into account identity issues, the interpenetration of various influences between different literatures, poetics and languages, the readers gain a broader context of intercultural dialogue between the Orient and Occident, what allow them to transgress barriers of a purely artistic, literary reception of the book contents. The volume – due to the abundance of proposed topics, its heterogeneous representations and manifold approaches used in analysis, discussion and (re)interpretations – is a debate’s record or a result of an academic reflection rather than a comprehensive monograph.

The authors discuss selected texts from both historical and synchronic perspectives. They reveal and scrutinise the sedimented layers in their search for the original as well as for the repetitive and universal. The book revolves around the creative reception of one’s own cultural heritage and of works which originated in other cultures.

diary from the early Muromachi Period that includes only fifteen waka poems
interwoven with descriptions of places visited by the second Ashikaga shogun,
(1330–1367, r. 1358–1367). According to the title, the
work describes a journey made in 1364 to the Sumiyoshi Shrine located in
Settsu province (now in the Osaka region). The itinerary ran along the most
famous inland waterway of medieval Japan, namely Yodo River, which
connected the capital with Naniwa Bay (the eastern part of the Seto Inland Sea).
From there, making frequent stops along the way and entering Shitennōji
Temple, the travellers were able to easily reach the complex of the Sumiyoshi
Grand Shrine. The reason for visiting Sumiyoshi was the shogun-pilgrim’s
desire to win a favour of the god who was “a great protector of those who are
deeply devoted to the Way of Poetry [uta no michi]”. Aspiring to be an excellent
poet the shogun wanted to bow before the deity, recite his vow in the hope that
he also will find success in “Way of the Myriad Islands [Shikishima no michi]”.
W wymiarze symbolicznym konferencja była sposobnością do wspomnienia osoby Profesora Romana Stanisława Ingardena, którego fascynacja Japonią stworzyła podwaliny studiów japonistycznych w Toruniu.
The leading theme of the Conference stems from the perspective that the image of Japan is often blurred by myths and misconceptions, the identification of which is necessary to render this image more clear and closer to reality. It is the organizers’ hope that through offering a space for a vigorous, taboo-free academic discussion of relevant and timely subjects, the Conference will provide an opportunity to make a small step into this direction.
The key-theme of the 5 th edition of the conference is literature towards freedom and oppression that implies numerous perspectives in research on literary texts:
representations of literature as a laboratory of freedom and oppression
literature as a release from…
literature against totalitarianism
rebellion, alienation and striving for freedom in literature
prison literature
image of an oppressed man
motive of freedom and oppression
relations between freedom and the existential philosophy
creative freedom and the right of experiment with the word
author's autonomy
political and ideological independence of the creator and the characters he drew
symbols of the struggle for freedom
definitions, topoi and ranges of freedom and oppression
… and many other issues connected with the topic of the current edition of the conference.
We hope our conference will be a good occasion to discover some of these perspectives, to show new trends and subjects present in discourse on Oriental literary works and Oriental topics in Polish, European and world literature.
