Google kicked off its annual Google I/O developer conference with a big dose of AI.
The company’s core AI model Gemini is getting multiple upgrades, with Gemini 1.5 Pro now able to analyze longer documents, codebases, videos and audio recordings. It’s also working on Gemini Live (where users can have in-depth voice chats) and Gemini Nano (which can be used on Chrome desktop).
On the generative AI side, Google also announced Veo, where users can enter a text prompt and receive 1080p video clips that are about a minute long.
But the company isn’t just rolling out new products with AI — it’s also integrating them into its core services. Gmail users, for example, will be able to use Gemini to search, summarize and draft emails, or to perform more complex tasks like filling out the form for an online return.
AI is also coming to search, in the form of AI Overviews (basically, summaries of search results) being rolled out to hundreds of millions of users in the U.S. While this should worry any online business, Google claims it won’t show these overviews in instances where traditional search results are sufficient. It also says that while overviews were being tested, they actually caused people to click on a greater diversity of websites.
