[go: up one dir, main page]

Remixes are revealed! I realise belatedly that I did not rec a story someone did of a very (*very*) early Harry Potter story of mine, which you probably shouldn't read, but the remix is fantastic:

Lily's Falling (the Persistence Makes the Heart Grow Fonder Remix) (2697 words) by faviconxylodemon
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Harry Potter - J. K. Rowling
Rating: General Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Lily Evans/James Potter
Characters: James Potter, Sirius Black, Remus Lupin, Peter Pettigrew, Lily Evans
Summary: In which James isn't willing to give up that easily, and Lily sometimes acts like she's finally coming around.

It's completely delightful and fills me with Marauders nostalgia, awwwww. <3

*

And this was mine:

help me, hypervodkas, you're my only hope (the wishlist remix) (4097 words) by faviconsuch_heights
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Doctor Who
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Amy Pond/Rory Williams, Jack Harkness/Amy Pond/Rory Williams
Characters: Amy Pond, Rory Williams, Jack Harkness, Eleventh Doctor
Summary: "The last time I was sentenced to death, I ordered four hypervodkas for my breakfast. All a bit of a blur after that. I woke up in bed with both of my executioners." In which the Ponds meet a very young Jack Harkness, and Amy gets to cross an item or two off her bucket list.

Getting assigned [personal profile] coffeesuperhero was the best thing ever, and I had a blast writing that story. Many thanks to [personal profile] purplefringe for cheerleading and betaing!
Always a joy. :D Here are some of my stories people have recorded lately.

+ [livejournal.com profile] kalakirya recorded Just Save The First Edition For Me (Good Omens, Aziraphale/Crowley)

+ [personal profile] adistantsun recorded Still We Wait (Harry Potter, Lily)

+ [personal profile] sophinisba recorded Rebirth (Merlin/Torchwood, ensemble)

♥!
In this year's Fandom Steel Cage Match (at [livejournal.com profile] f_march_madness), some of the choices have hurt me in my soul. First [personal profile] thingswithwings wrote some Hermione/Katara in response to that pain - Theory In Practice, and it's faaaabulous - and then I wrote this. Zoe and Olivia are both winners in my heart.

Palm to Palm
Fringe/Firefly ; Olivia/Zoe ; G ; 700 words ; no content notes ; also at the AO3
Zoe first met Olivia in a dingy bar on a particularly disreputable moon.

Set post-Serenity, with Fringe spoilers through 'Jacksonville'.

A lone woman bonding with a glass of whiskey like it was her only friend didn't stand out in a place like this. )
eeeee I just read my [community profile] femslash11 story by [personal profile] lilacsigil and IT'S SO AWESOME OMG. I am beyond delighted she picked these pairings to write and did them so well! *_*

Don't Know Where, Don't Know When (4287 words) by faviconlilacsigil
Fandom: Harry Potter - J. K. Rowling, Doctor Who (2005)
Rating: Mature
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Minerva McGonagall/River Song, Martha Jones/Nymphadora Tonks
Characters: Minerva McGonagall, River Song, Martha Jones, Nymphadora Tonks

multi-fandom vids

Space Girl by [personal profile] charmax

Looks like half of fandom has already seen this, but just in case! So, so lovely, a fantastic look at the history of women in sci-fi.

Hands Away by [personal profile] chaila and [personal profile] beccatoria (Fringe/Sarah Connor Chronicles, Olivia/Sarah)

The Olivia/Sarah fever dream vid of my heart! I got to see a draft of this at Vidukon and it blew me away then - it's even more awesome now. Beautifully edited, full of visual parallels and really clever cutting and really brilliant all round.

The Price by [personal profile] thingswithwings

This is a biting satire about manpain. It's kind of amazing. People's reactions seem to vary from rage to facepalming to lulz - it's very funny in places, especially the end. Mostly, it makes me feel really sad. I wish this wasn't such an all-encompassing phenomenon in my shows. The accompanying meta is also an excellent read.

fic

Hidden in Plain Sight by [personal profile] liseuse (Harry Potter, Pansy/Hermione)

For [livejournal.com profile] queer_fest, this is a gorgeous look at the difficulties and secret thrills of a covert relationship, as well as having a lovely grounding in the lives of these two young women and their friends, all being awesome post-Hogwarts. I enjoyed it a lot!

Grey. Red. Green. by [personal profile] calvinahobbes (Doctor Who, Vastra/Jenny)

a;ljsda. An awesome [community profile] kink_bingo story that derives its hotness entirely from Jenny's mental state and a sense of tension that permeates the whole story as Jenny investigates Vastra's swords.

[livejournal.com profile] coffeesuperhero and [livejournal.com profile] leiascully are both writing loads of wonderful Eleven/River stories at the moment. I recommend them all! Particular favourites of mine include [livejournal.com profile] coffeesuperhero's let's live in the moment just this time, could we? and [livejournal.com profile] leiascully's double your pleasure, double your fun.

Roles by [personal profile] pocketmouse (Doctor Who, Amy/Rory)

I was excited as soon as I heard this was a story about teenage Rory crossdressing, and it did not disappoint. So completely adorable and written with a lovely, light touch.

Team Bonding by [livejournal.com profile] pocky_slash (Doctor Who/White Collar, Canton/OC, Diana/Christie)

Oh look, it's my two favourite queer FBI agents hanging out with each other! :DD Kait wrote this for me for my birthday and I love it ENTIRELY.
Avatar: the Last Airbender

Filial Impiety by [personal profile] lizbee (Azula/Toph)

[personal profile] lizbee makes this pairing work so, so well, this is a great future fic.

Grey by [livejournal.com profile] melodytree (Kyoshi)

For [livejournal.com profile] queer_fest, this is a long and lovely look at Kyoshi's life and her negotiations of being genderqueer.

Doctor Who

Vids:

St. Stephen's Cross by [personal profile] kaydeefalls (Amy/Rory)

[personal profile] kaydeefalls + Vienna Teng + Amy/Rory = all the happiness.

Whatever It Is by [personal profile] usuallyhats (ALL THE COMPANIONS OMG)

A lovely, quiet look at all the amazing companions of the show from Ian and Barbara to Amy and Rory. <3

Before I Met You by [personal profile] fizzyblogic (Doctor/River, various others)

eeee! [personal profile] fizzyblogic made this for ME and it is LOVELY. An awesome look at love through time and space and the Doctor and River's different approaches to it, and also the two of them being all pretty and wonderful.

Fic:

Straight Lines by [livejournal.com profile] calapine (Eleven/TARDIS)

The perfect coda to 6x04.

Harry Potter

Souvenirs and Lost Luggage by anonymous at [insanejournal.com profile] hp_beholder (Petunia)

This is a wonderful and sympathetic look at Petunia rediscovering herself post-series.

Dudley Dursley and the Elusive Difference by [livejournal.com profile] kahvi

Another [livejournal.com profile] queer_fest story, this does a really great job of keeping Dudley's characterisation consistent with the series while also giving him a lot more depth, spinning from the premise that he's intersex and doesn't know for a long time. Lovely.

Fannish News

[community profile] kink_bingo is gearing up for another round, whee! There are essays and updated rules and so on at the comm, which are all worth reading. Some of the rule changes are pretty great, particularly the addition of various achievements for things like getting a line bingo with asexual characters etc, and also the fact it's extended for an extra month, which gives me something to do when I am post-degree and job-hunting in September, awesome.
Month of Awesome Women, week two:

Martha Jones | Kaylee Frye | Cara Mason | Jennifer Keller | Guinevere | Jadzia Dax | Olivia Dunham

Luna did not seem perturbed by Ron's rudeness; on the contrary, she simply watched him for a while as though he were a mildly interesting television program.

'Don't worry, you're just as sane as I am.' )

Rec: Not A Necklace by [livejournal.com profile] snegurochka_lee (Ginny/Luna)
Asking Luna Lovegood if she would be willing to break a few rules was something like asking a Puffskein if it would be willing to have a go on the dance floor, Ginny decided early in their sixth year at school: in both cases, you would be asking the wrong question.
So I haven't had time to delve into [livejournal.com profile] rs_small_gifts yet on account of how I'm still working on my own submission (sorry again, mods!). But the story [personal profile] raven wrote for me went up today, and oh wow.

Evergreen by [personal profile] raven (Harry Potter, Remus/Sirius, PG)

I'm still all verklempt over it so I can't write the most useful of recs, but this is a beautiful story about community and different traditions within the Order in the First War, and about light in the darkness, and about when you love someone, they're the brightest light of all. I love it really a lot. If you ever loved this ship, this story will remind you why.

+ I am signed up for my fourth year at RemixRedux! Sign-up info this way. I wonder if this will be the first year I don't get a friend to remix? Previously I have remixed [personal profile] glass_icarus, [livejournal.com profile] rian219 and [personal profile] netgirl_y2k, all of whom were awesome assignments. Surely my luck cannot hold so well?

+ [community profile] ladiesbigbang is a really, really cool thing. You can Big Bang via a number of formats including fic, art, podfic, recs, picspam and vids, and you can also contribute a combination of different media to count towards your overall total. Which is awesome. Lots of info over at the comm about how it all works, but signups run through April and the final draft deadline is September 1st. Also, you can participate even if you don't sign up, just as long as you hit that final deadline. I am spectacularly rubbish with deadlines on big projects, as any number of people can attest to, but I may attempt this one anyway because it is just that cool.

+ Rec: Could You Be A Little Less by [livejournal.com profile] the_birdnest (Harry Potter, various women, PG-13, non-graphic mention of sexual assault). A wry and quietly heartbreaking look at gender in HP.
+ Whee, Yuletide! My assignment is awesome. \o/ (Yuletide author, if you're looking for my letter it is this way.

+ Also, IN A FIT OF I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT, I just signed up for [livejournal.com profile] festivids (like Yuletide but for rare vidding fandoms). It was shiny, I couldn't resist! *facepalm* Anyway, if you want to join me, sign-ups close on Tuesday.

+ I have not seen Doctor Who yet, though I am sure I will soon, as my desire to see Tennant wins out over my apathy at anything RTD writes these days.

+ Some recs:

Mr Potter Lives For A Day by [livejournal.com profile] snegurochka_lee [Harry Potter, Albus Severus-centric, with a bit of implied Albus Severus/Scorpius and cameos by James, Lily, and portrait!Snape, PG-13]
Albus wakes up on his seventeenth birthday determined to make the most of it.

This story is about far more than the summary would imply - it's a brilliant piece of slowly unfurling narration, and the premise has been haunting me for days. There's not a lot more I can say without spoiling it.

Like Water On The Moon by [livejournal.com profile] magnetic_pole [Harry Potter, Alice/Amelia, PG]

A gorgeous First-War snapshot and a lovely pairing.

Project Run,way Galaxy [Doctor Who] by [livejournal.com profile] othellia, a hilarious piece of crack told in over 130 macros.

You Don't Bring Me Flowers (Anymore) by [livejournal.com profile] blue_fjords [Torchwood, Tosh/Adam, R]

Adam (both the episode and the character) creeps me out like no one's business, but this is more tragic than disturbing, and a brilliant look at the alternate characterisation of Tosh in that episode.

+ Lastly, some more on last's night Merlin, with spoilery recs. )
My flist is a-buzz with Doctor Who squee, which is happy-making. It was initially a little weird to see my name all over fandom (for all that Amy's a common girl's name, you don't actually see it that much in fiction), but I am growing used to it and am very excited about the advent of Eleven and Amy Pond.

Also, casting spoiler )

New Leverage was lovely! quick spoilers )

I have been rewatching the first season and it takes away all my sadness and fills my heart with gladness. :D If anyone has been wondering whether or not they want a show in their lives that features hot, dorky thieves who do crime for great justice, I can assure you that you do.

*

I have been remixed!

Sailed on Shooting Stars (Three Weddings and a Funeral Remix) by anonymous
Harry Potter ; Remus/Sirius, Remus/Tonks ; PG-13
Ceremony or no, they didn’t get the Ministry’s seal of approval, couldn’t make medical decisions for each other, or inherit belongings, or adopt kids. It didn’t matter how they felt about each other. Same-sex couples weren’t entitled to that.

This is really very good, and very interesting as a remix - it's taken the dialogue from the original story and made the internal motivation of the characters and their interaction very different. It's sharp and aching and I like it a lot.

*

And finally, I have been talking to a couple of flisters, and would any London-ish HP fen like to go see HBP this Sunday? Drop me a comment if you're interested and we can get a meet-up together.
Eee! I am a very lucky duck and [livejournal.com profile] spacefragments has drawn me art! :D

There is Complementary [Lily/James, R], and Surprise Visit [James, Sirius, G], and they are both here and I have much reignited HP fanart love.

Also, HP folk, did you read [livejournal.com profile] minnow_53's latest, Baby Dear? [Lily, James, baby, PG, AU] It is SO good, yes.

Also also, I was reading an article about the HBP film coming out in less than a month, and I felt yet another sudden frisson of Potter excitement! Aw. I am looking forward to going to see it with friends and things, and London fen, plans should be afoot, y/y?
The story for me got posted at [livejournal.com profile] springtime_gen! It is delightful!

Here Is No Place, by anonymous
Harry Potter ; Lily, James, Sirius ; PG
A housewarming party The Greatest Party Ever yields a quiet moment between friends.

Aw! This is absolutely lovely. Bantery and affection and the easy use of magic, but with an underlying sense of what's to come. A great read!

Also, omg, I am just so happy the fic below now exists:

Salt Water, by [livejournal.com profile] lefaym
Malory Towers ; Mary-Lou/Darrell ; PG
The taste of salt water always reminded Mary-Lou to be brave, even after all these years.

I'd barely thought about Malory Towers in years, but the first paragraph of this story was enough to bring it all rushing back. This makes fantastic use of a World War 2 setting to pick up again with Mary-Lou and Darrell, who are so perfectly in character. Gentle, real, and generally fabulous.
Yeah, I think I'm just going to spam you all with other people's awesome fic this week, as that's how I'm procrastinating on my own submissions. Cool? Cool.

Doctor Who:
The Kleptomaniac Time Traveller's Club, by [livejournal.com profile] netgirl_y2k [Romana, Christina, G]
“A quick word of advice, if you ever find yourself travelling the universe with a kleptomaniac keep a close eye on any valuables.”

There's nothing in that header that is not fantastic, am I right? This is so much fun, and as I said to [livejournal.com profile] netgirl_y2k, a spin-off I totally want to watch.

*

A couple of things from [livejournal.com profile] lgbtfest:

Harry Potter:
Live Every Day, by [personal profile] mindabbles. [Alice/various, R]
There are all kinds of families. She knows that better than most. Sometimes it is love that ties them together, and sometimes it's comfort or needing each other. Sometimes it's music and stories shared around a fire.

I want to say all sorts of intelligent things about this story, but I haven't quite found the words yet. It's gorgeous, and a brilliant example of something that's completely canon-compliant but doesn't fit the standard backstory we assign these characters.

*

Leverage:
The Epiphany Job, by [livejournal.com profile] shrift. [Alec/Eliot, PG-13]
"When he rolled out of bed that afternoon, heated up some Philly Steak & Cheese Hot Pockets for breakfast, and then went to the office, Alec Hardison was not expecting to experience a paradigm shift."

The characterisation in this makes me wriggle with glee. \o/

*

You know, I'm pretty sure I had no intention whatsoever of getting into another fandom. I mean, I watched Leverage and loved it and everything, but the fic just had to go and be amazing, didn't it? Sigh. My life, so hard. *g*

(On that note - guys, seriously, watch Leverage. It's about hot thieves who steal things for Great Justice and it has teeeeam and multi-shipping and I am so in love with Parker and Eliot and Alec I can't even tell you.)

*

Moar Leverage recs:

Faint Heart Never Won Fair Lady, by [livejournal.com profile] hackthis. [Parker/Maggie, Alec/Eliot, PG-13]
"I called her on her cell phone and said I thought her hair was shiny, and she smelled nice, and did she want to have dinner sometime?"

Working Without a Net, by [livejournal.com profile] facetofcathy>. [Alec/Eliot, Adult]
When they're not off on a job, Eliot and Parker drop by a lot, and by some secret code or psychic connection or the alignment of the stars, usually at about the same time.

The Way to a Man's Heart, by [livejournal.com profile] merle_p. [Alec/Eliot, R]
(or: Five times Eliot Spencer cooked for Alec Hardison)

Courtship, by [livejournal.com profile] with_a_kay [Alec/Parker, PG]
He brings her flowers. No boy has ever brought her flowers before.

It's All So Clear to Me Now, by [livejournal.com profile] fools_game. [Alec/Eliot, Nate/Sophie, PG]
Parker sees more than some people think.

*

[livejournal.com profile] sambethe has my undying gratitude for bringing this GEM of a fic to my attention. It is the story of my heart, my dreams, my soul! It's fall-over-laughing funny! Omg yes.

It’s Not A Déjà-vu, It’s The Time Warp by [livejournal.com profile] pforte
Merlin/Torchwood/Harry Potter ; Merlin/Arthur, Jack/Ianto, Remus/Sirius ; R

"We’re secondary characters in a children’s fantasy series. Remus doesn’t like the name but we’re calling this little group PISSA. Means Popular and Ill-treated Slash Ships Anonymous."

"A self-help group for the unluckily slashed," Remus added helpfully.

If you're a fan of any of the three ships featured here, you'll love this. If you're a fan/familiar with all three, it's like hitting the Jackpot of Awesome. [livejournal.com profile] pforte nails it - the fanon cliches, the ridiculousness, the way all three ships are exactly the same when it comes to badfic, and the whole thing is so wry and well-done and comedy gold. Merlin gets possessed by a self-insert! Sirius is made to kiss girls! Jack's tired of re-enacting bad gay porn! Ahahahaha, [livejournal.com profile] pforte wins everything, the end.

01. Many kisses have been exchanged here (nearly 5000 words of them, no less) - thanks to everyone for playing!

02. In what seems to be a bus-like phenomenon, I suddenly have a collection of fic nomination emails. Fandom awards and such have always been a bit of a mystery to me, but The Rumour Mill's been nominated at the Forbidden Awards and the Quibbler Awards, while In An Interstellar Burst and the Jack/Gwen fiveways have been dropped into the current pool of Children of Time stories. If my nominators are out there, thanks! It's terribly nice to be thought of, though like I say, I'm a bit bewildered by these things.

03. There may be something appearing here shortly, but otherwise I must take my leave for a couple of weeks whilst I wrangle with some very nuisance-like examinations.

04. A few recs to end:

and there is pansies, that's for thoughts by [livejournal.com profile] ignipes, the most adorable Merlin story there ever was.

The Worst-Case Scenario Handbook: Harry Potter by [livejournal.com profile] rowen_r, which is hilarious and dead-on.

The Hard Prayer by [livejournal.com profile] rheanna27, a long and exceptionally gripping SGA AU that I would happily recommend to any post-apocalypse fans, whether you've seen the original canon or not, [livejournal.com profile] rheanna27 does such a great job of characterisation and world-building. It's 30,000 words and I could not stop reading the damn thing, much to the detriment of my evening yesterday!
Eeeeee!!! For [livejournal.com profile] rs_small_gifts, [livejournal.com profile] coldneedles took my prompt of art for one of my stories, and it just got posted, and OMG.

Sea Spray, by [livejournal.com profile] coldneedles
Harry Potter ; Remus/Sirius ; G
art for The Shores Of The Sea

And it's gorgeous. ♥ ♥ ♥
Dear LJ,

Today I slept a great deal and watched four episodes of Merlin. It was a good day.

Merlin! Warlocks and dragons and castles, oh my. )

***

Also, though I'm not allowing myself to dive into the exchange properly until my own story is finished and submitted, grah, [livejournal.com profile] rs_small_gifts has started posting! And all looks wondrous. What I did manage to read was the following, and it was excellent:

Waiting For The Great Leap Forward, by [livejournal.com profile] woldy
Harry Potter ; Remus/Sirius ; PG-13
Four winters in Remus' life, told backwards.

This is a wonderfully intelligent story, on class differences and politics and how Remus and Sirius fell apart. It's quite a bit heartbreaking, but in such a plausible way, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
A post of parts today!

First, briefly on Supernatural )
So there needs to be Torchwood/Supernatural crossovers approximately yesterday. In fact, there are many, many Whoverse crossovers that should be out there! Which leads me beautifully onto part two:

[livejournal.com profile] dw_cross sign-ups are now open! Last year was a blast and so this year I'm going to be giving [livejournal.com profile] avendya a helping hand. I can tell you now we've got some fantastic prompts coming in already. The fics are due at the beginning of July, just after the end of Series 4, and whatever bits of Who fandom you're in and whatever crossovers you'd like to write, you should definitely come and play! Read more information here and sign up here before May 10th.

This just in - Freema Agyeman is adorable! (Links to her interview on the Paul O'Grady show tonight, featuring a clip from tomorrow's episode.) Star Trek conventions, guys, I ask you! *draws hearts* I shall be all a-flail tomorrow night, I don't doubt, so expect nothing but capslock from round these parts. Martha! *\o/*

I'm looking forward to Remix reveals tomorrow - I don't think I'm alone in being unable to get The Boy Who Killed Time out of my head, so I can't wait to find out who's responsible. I'm pretty sure on two or three anonymous identities myself, and if anyone else would like to take a stab at which one's mine you may do so here. I've got a few more things I'd like to read and leave feedback on before tomorrow afternoon, but here's a few more recs.

*

A Moon-Lit Challenge (The Ill-Met, Proud Titania Remix)
Good Omens/His Dark Materials; Lyra/Adam; R
Remix of A Moonlit Challenge (hmm, dead link) by [livejournal.com profile] hyel
The new Eve and an Antichrist - not so much star-crossed as Dust-crossed lovers. Lyra wants her happy ending so badly, but she's still a long way away from endings of any kind.

Oooh, this is a wonderful meshing of canons - it blends in bits and pieces of other Gaiman and Pratchett stories, and the characters of both the main stories meet in all sorts of interesting way. Lyra and Adam are both perfect, and there's a lot of great cameos from others. A really nicely done, intelligent and interesting story.

Radioactive (the road to hell & good intentions remix)
Harry Potter; James/Lily; PG
Remix of Radioactive by [livejournal.com profile] ineffabili_tea
In which James means well, but his grand plan loses something in the execution.

Awww, I haven't read proper Marauder prank fic in ages, not like this, this is so funny and well-characterised and great fun all round.

thirteen photographs (the via crucis remix)
Harry Potter; Remus/Sirius; PG-13
Remix of train de grande vitesse by [livejournal.com profile] glass_icarus
A love story in fourteen parts.

Beautiful, heartbreaking and insightful, and the writing is just stunning. This captures so many moments, the kind of story to just wrap up in for a little while.

Somewhere, Just Not Here (The Five Months and Thirteen Days Remix)
Harry Potter; Remus, Harry; G
Remix of Heliacal Rising by [livejournal.com profile] sambethe
It did no good to think of fair.

I'm a big fan of the original and this complements it wonderfully - one of those scenes that really ought to have been in canon.

*

Ah, see, HP, I do still love thee well, truly! And on that note I return to writing [livejournal.com profile] lgbtfest, which is really not as done as it should be considering my posting date's on Sunday, um. Actually, on that note, if anyone had a bit of spare time over the weekend to give it a once over I'd be enormously grateful. It's Luna gen (well, mostly gen. I think.) and I doubt it's going to end up any kind of epic length.
