The article contains a first systematic description of the consonant phonemes in Changana/Tsonga, based mainly on standard grammars and dictionaries (Baumbach 1987, Cuénod 1967, Ribeiro 1965, Sitoe 1996). The number of distinctive phonemes is extremely high, around 125. The systems of stops and affricates are shown to be very complex. Several sounds are quite unusual or unique, in particular the prenasalised voiced aspirated stops and affricates. Phonological and orthographic differences between the standard forms in South Africa and in Mozambique are discussed.

The goal of this paper is to demonstrate how the Southern Bantu languages are related to each other historically. The method used is analysis of phonological changes. The work is organized as follows. First, a short survey of previous research and the present state of knowledge is given. Then follows a presentation of the evidence for relations among the four main groups of languages in the southern region, followed by comments about the separate developments within the groups. In a short section it is explained why Shona is not included in the group. After that, a fairly detailed explanation of the reasons for the proposal that Makua, including Emakhuwa and Elomwe, belongs to the Southern Bantu group is offered. The final part is a discussion of the historical implications of the findings.

A selection of typologically unusual or possibly unique sounds in Changana are briefly described, including the unaspirated and aspirated versions of /tl / and /p§ / as well as voiced and aspirated prenasalised affricates such as /ndZH/. It is also shown that prenasalisation occurs with implosives as well as with voiced, voiceless unaspirated, and voiceless aspirated stops. 1
