This article discusses the use and abuse of religious beliefs and their role in divide-and-conquer strategies. Divide-and-conquer strategies are engaged to disrupt potential coalitions between and among marginalized group members, specifically sexual minority groups and people of color. Tensions between these groups have been exacerbated by the debate on same-sex marriage and comparisons between the discriminatory treatment of each group. A component of this discussion includes a brief exploration of one of the historical abuses of religious doctrine used to legitimize the marginalization of people of color and sexual minorities in the United States. For African Americans, one form of marginalization was reflected in criminalizing interracial marriage, and for members of sexual minority groups, a form of marginalization is denying group members the right to marry. The author also explores culturally competent and respectful disciplinary and clinical responses to religiously derived prejudice against sexual minority group members and people of color and discusses the implications for multicultural discourse.

Clinical psychological research has been a part of a significant growth of scholarly literature in mental health that appropriately explores relevant cultural variables and their effects on both the mental health and treatment of ethnic minority group members. A similar expansion of material seeking to develop affirmative perspectives in the treatment of gay men and lesbians has also found its way into the psychological literature. Scarcely any research seeks to explore the particular psychological strengths and vulnerabilities of men and women who are members of both groups. This article reviews literature pertinent to the cultural proscriptions of several ethnic minority groups and their relevance to mental health issues and treatment of gay and lesbian members, as well as a review of potential countertransference dilemmas for therapists.

This chapter updates our previous article (R. L. Hall & B. Greene, 1995) and incorporates a case study to highlight the experiences of African American families. We hope to provide information that can guide the practice of feminist family therapy. The purpose of this chapter is to discuss the use of a feminist family therapy paradigm within a specific cultural context. We selected an African American married woman as a client because African American women are more likely to use therapy and are frequently the person in the family who brings other family members into therapy. We discuss Sarah's reason for referral, the interventions used, and the outcome of therapy. Sarah and her husband's family of origin histories as well as their immediate family are also examined to illustrate its relevance to the presenting problem. In recent years African American families have assumed a higher level of visibility among consumers of psychological services. Despite this they are often reluctant consumers with a history of insensitive treatment from mental health institutions. Many African American men and women are also wary of feminism. These factors may leave the feminist family therapist with unique challenges in providing treatment to African American families. This article explores the need to view the African American family's experience in the context of African American cultural imperatives and the antagonistic relationship between African Americans and the dominant culture in the U.S. The authors also address the importance of the therapists' awareness of their own racial identity, the role of white skin privilege, and the role of racism in the lives of African and white Americans.
