San Benedetto dei Marsi (Laitin: Marruvium or Marrubium; Greek: Μαρούϊον) is a comune an toun in the province o L'Aquila in the Abruzzo region o Italy. It is on the eastren shore o the dried Loch Fucino, 20 kilometre (12 mi) frae the remains o anither auncient steid, Alba Fucens.

Near the toun is the stream Giovenco, identifee'd as the auncient stream kent as Pitonius.

History

[eedit | eedit soorce]

The auncient Marruvium wis the chief ceety o the Italic tribe o the Marsi; Marruvii or Marrubii is anither shape o the name o the Marsi, an wis uised bi Virgil as a ethnic appellation ("Marruvia de gente", Aen. vii. 750).

In accordance wi this, Silius Italicus describes Marruvium as derivin its name frae a certain Marrus an aw, who is evidently anerly an eponymous hero o the Marsi. (Sil. Ital. viii. 505.) We hae nae accoont o Marruvium, housomeivver, previous tae the Roman conquest o the Marsic territory; but unner the Roman Empire it wis a flourishin municipal toun; it is noticit as such baith bi Strabo an Pliny, an in inscriptions we find it cried "splendidissima civitas Marsorum Marruvium". (Strab. v. p. 241; Plin. iii. 12. s. 17; Mommsen, Inscr. R. N. 5491, 5499; Orell. Inscr. 3149.)

It wis cried Civitas Marsorum an aw, an, in the Middle Ages, Civitas Marsicana. (Lib. Colon. pp. 229, 256.) It is noticit in the Tabula Peutingeriana, which places it 13 M. P. frae Alba; but it wis not situatit on the Via Valeria, an must hae communicatit wi that heich-road bi a branch frae Cerfennia. (Tab. Peut.)

The toun wis a episcopal see in the Middle Ages, bein destroyed in 1340 durin the Angevine wars for the conquest o the Kinrick o Naples. In 1580 the see wis muivit tae the neebourin toun o Pescina.

Main sichts

[eedit | eedit soorce]

Considerable ruins o the auncient ceety still remain, includin portions o its waws an the remains o a amphitheatre, an numerous inscriptions, as well as statues, hae been discovered on the steid. These ruins are situatit close tae the margin o the loch, aboot 3 kilometre (2 mi) belaw Pescina. (Holsten. ad Cluver. p. 151; Romanelli, vol. iii. p. 180-186; Kramer, Fuciner See, p. 55; Hoare's Class. Tour, vol. i. pp. 357–361. The inscriptions are collectit bi Mommsen, (I. R. N. pp. 290–294.)
