I have graduated from Aristotle University in Thessaloniki, Greece obtaining a Bachelor degree in Archaeology, History and History of Art. I hold a Master degree from University of Southampton in UK, specializing on Palaeolithic Archaeology and Human Origins. My research focused on unravelling the paths Neanderthals followed to enter Britain walking a land bridge across the frozen English Channel. I gained my PhD in Geoarchaeology from Queen’s University Belfast working on early human occupation new sites and cultural patterns in Northern Libya over the last ~200 kyr.
Fascinated by behavioural and socioeconomic patterns, art and symbolism and lithic technology of early modern humans and participated in archaeological excavations in Greece, Cyprus, Romania, England, Ireland, India, China and Libya. My work has been presented at international conferences and published in scientific journals and books.
My research revolves around, Medieval and Colonialism Cypriot history, Prehistoric cultures, early trade, seafaring and food consumption. Landscape evolution and palaeoecology as well as Experimental archaeology, and the application of geoarchaeological methods in the field.
I run an Academy of experimental archaeology and cultural heritage awareness for kids and adults on the island of Cyprus and have my own weekly Radio show - an episodic series on archaeology and history.edit

The second (2008) season of fieldwork of the Cyrenaican Prehistory Project has significantly advanced understanding of the Haua Fteah stratigraphy and of the archaeology and geomorphology of the landscape in which the cave is located. The excavations of the McBurney backfill have reached a total depth of 7.5 m below the present ground surface, the depth at which two human mandibles were found in the 1950s excavations. Reconnaissance at the Hagfet ed-Dabba established that the sediments associated with the Upper Palaeolithic ‘Dabban’ industry were more or less entirely removed by the McBurney excavation. Exploratory excavations in the Hagfet al-Gama, a coastal cave west of the Haua Fteah, found evidence of Mesolithic, Neolithic, and Hellenistic occupation. The initial results from the study of botanical remains, both macroscopic and microscopic, obtained in the 2007 season at the Haua Fteah confirm the potential of the site to yield a rich suite of materials to inform on climatic and...

The paper reports on the third (2009) season of fieldwork of the Cyrenaican Prehistory Project, and on further results from the analysis of materials collected in the previous (2007 and 2008) fieldwork. Sediments in a 14 m-deep core drilled beside the McBurney trench provide an invaluable overview of the overall stratigraphic sequence, including at depths reached by the 1950s Deep Sounding but not yet investigated by the present project. Sampling of newly-exposed faces of the original excavation trench for dating (14C, ESR, OSL, U-series) and palaeoenvirommental indicators continued. Excavation was begun of sediments assigned to the early Holocene Libyco-Capsian (McBurney's Layer X), and of Pre-Aurignacian layers beside the top of the Deep Sounding. The Libyco-Capsian layers are particularly prolific in lithic debris, shells, and animal bones; preliminary analysis of the lithics suggests a development from Typical to Upper Capsian within the layers excavated in 2009. Geoarchaeol...

Excavations at Haua Fteah cave in Cyrenaica, Libya, have revealed a cultural sequence that may span the last glacial–interglacial-glacial cycle. The TRANS-NAP project has been re-excavating Haua Fteah and conducting geoarchaeological survey of an ecologically diverse landscape that includes the fertile Gebel Akhdar and littoral, pre-desert, and desert biomes. A major aim of this project is to characterize cultural and environmental changes across the region and correlate the surface archaeology with that from Haua Fteah. To date, 181 sites have been recorded, ranging from the Middle Stone Age (MSA) to Late Stone Age (LSA). Their geographic distribution suggests temporal variation in patterns of hominin habitat preference, with significantly more LSA than MSA sites at higher elevations. The surface archaeology also points to substantial spatiotemporal technological variation within the MSA. These patterns may be explained by both paleoenvironmental change and paleodemographic shifts ...

The Belgammel Ram was found off the coast of Libya in 1964, and examined during 2008–9. The following techniques were used: surface non-contact digitizing using a laser scanner, reflectance transformation imaging using polynomial texture mapping and hemi-spherical harmonics, digital photogrammetry with dense surface modelling, structured light optical scanning, and X-ray fluorescence analysis.

Landscape, people and climate are three variables that are inextricably linked. During the Holocene optimum period~5ka the Mediterranean acted as a concentration basin, with onset mechanisms that are still unclear. However, the human and climatic impact on the terrestrial environment around the basin has been a key factor in vegetation and spatial change. During this long period that finds Cyprus throughout the evolution from stone to bronze, many major Neolithic villages were abandoned.

This thesis combined geoarchaeological techniques of stratigraphic and sedimentological analysis, micromorphology, archaeology and dating to produce a later Quaternary stratigraphy and environmental history for Cyrenaica. This is the first robust stratigraphic framework for this period in Cyrenaica. The landscape response to environmental change over climatic cycles includes cold stage colluvial diamicts and fluvial gravels and warm stage palaeosols, lacustrine and marginal marine deposits. The stratigraphic background and environmental diagnoses resulted from this project provide the landscape and environmental context in which early humans operated.
Evidence of human activity is found abundantly in association with warm climates and sparsely with cold climates, although this may be partly the result of the different kinds of sedimentary environments in different climatic regimes. Most sites contained isolated lithic cores and primary flakes. A few sites show evidence of core reduction and a few others contained simple hearths. Larger sites, of Middle Stone Age and Epipalaeolithic technology are associated with a palaeolake in the Wadi Derna. The Hajj Creiem site was previously excavated and thought to be a Stone Age village. This research has shown that the artefacts and bones are waterlain and were probably deposited over a considerable time in OIS5 on the periphery of ‘home-base’ – type site.
