There are several factors influencing the time of construction project execution. The properties of the planned structure, the details of an order, and macroeconomic factors affect the project completion time. Every construction project is unique, but the data collected from previously completed projects help to plan the new one. The association analysis is a suitable tool for uncovering the rules—showing the influence of some factors appearing simultaneously. The input data to the association analysis must be preprocessed—every feature influencing the duration of the project must be divided into ranges. The number of features and the number of ranges (for each feature) create a very complicated combinatorial problem. The authors applied a metaheuristic tabu search algorithm to find the acceptable thresholds in the association analysis, increasing the strength of the rules found. Owing to the extensive global dependency on groundwater and associated increasing water demand, the global groundwater level is declining rapidly. In the case of Islamabad, Pakistan, the groundwater level has lowered five times over the past five years due to extensive pumping by various departments and residents to meet the local water requirements. To address this, water reservoirs and sources need to be delineated, and potential recharge zones are highlighted to assess the recharge potential. Therefore, the current study utilizes an integrated approach based on remote sensing (RS) and GIS using the influence factor (IF) technique to delineate potential groundwater recharge zones in Islamabad, Pakistan. Soil map of Pakistan, Landsat 8TM satellite data, digital elevation model (ASTER DEM), and local geological map were used in the study for the preparation of thematic maps of 15 key contributing factors considered in this study. To generate a combined groundwater recharge map, rate...

This paper presents costs arisen from every-day transport of building machinery from the yard located by the road being constructed to the place of work. These costs are not directly associated with the income creating. The optimal choice of the place for the machinery yard can substantially lower these costs. The following two methods of finding the optimal place were proposed: based on the shortest distance and based on the lowest cost of building machinery self-transport. They were calculated for the exemplary data. Applying the method based on the lowest cost allows fi nding more than one location of machinery yard. The cost of applying more than one yard can reduce much more the costs of construction site.

Being negatively impressed by the data published by the European Commission in CARE (Community database on Accidents on the Roads in Europe), where Poland is presented as the European Country with the highest rate of fatalities in road crashes involving cyclists during 4 years period (2009–2013), the Authors decided to analyse available data. Bikes become a more and more popular means of transport and the way of active recreation. In Warsaw, the share of bicycle trips rises 1 to 3% per year. The aforementioned, together with increasing traffic density, caused 4233 registered injuries among cyclists in 2018 in Poland. In 286 cases the accidents were direct reasons for the cyclists’ death. Considering these facts, it becomes extremely important to point the most influencing factors and conditions contributing to cyclists’ serious accidents. Onedimensional or two-dimensional statistics are not sufficient to find all important associations between the road conditions and the number of c...

Over the recent years, the construction industry has been adapting the information technology (IT) in terms of computer design, construction documentation, maintenance, cost estimates, schedules (for example through BIM-Building Information Modelling), sales, procurement, etc. Gathered information about buildings, contracts, facilities, their use and maintenance generates a solid platform for the use of data mining. Using data mining methods in construction can improve the management and maintenance processes. Stakeholders like: architects, project managers, contractors, engineers, and owners can obtain important information from the databases using one of the numerous tools mentioned in the article (for example CART, MARS, ANN, SVM). Data mining can also allow for discovering of previously unknown dependencies in processes like construction training or decision-making. The article is a review of the data mining and machine learning methods used in construction. It presents current applications and academic research projects. Authors describe the phenomena, identify relevant publications, asses them, summarize and interpret significant findings. As a result, missing areas, trends and research opportunities are outlined.

The homogenous properties – as flats are – have the set of key features that characterizes them. The area of a flat, the number of rooms and storey number where it is located, the technical state of a building, and the state of the vicinity of the blocks of flats assessed. The database comprises 222 flats with their transaction prices on the secondary estate market. The analysed flats are located in a certain quarter of Wroclaw city in Poland. The database is large enough to apply machine learning for successful price predictions. Their close locations significantly lower the influence of clients’ assessments of the attractiveness of the location on the flat’s price. The hybrid approach is applied, where classifying precedes the solution of the regression problem. Dependently on the class of flats, the mean absolute percentage error achieved through the calculations presented in the article varies from 4,4 % to 7,8 %. In the classes of flats where the number of cases doesn’t allow f...

Running a tender procedure in the construction industry a client expects receiving reasonable prices in the tenders. However, the market competition and the contractors’ will to win a contract to work out a profit, sometimes make the prices far from expected. They can be really low, almost impossible to be kept during the contract execution. Oppositely, the offered prices can be far above a client’s expectation. If they are extremely high, a client has to decide, to accept one of them (even bid-rigging is suspected), or to cancel the procedure. Nevertheless, cancelling a procedure means the considerably postponed the start of the construction. The analysis of almost 400 completed tender procedures (in the Polish road construction industry) and the market trends proved that unexpectedly high prices do not always have to point the collusive behaviours of the offerors. As aforementioned analysis is based on past cases, there is a need to propose the predicting tool, to help clients mak...

In multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) problems the decision-maker is often forced to accept a not ideal solution. If the ideal choice exists, it would be certainly chosen. The acceptance of a non- ideal solution leads to some inadequate properties in the chosen solution. MCDM methods help the decision-maker to structure his needs considering different units, in which the properties of the solutions are expressed. Secondly, with MCDM tools the assessment of the available solutions can be calculated with consideration of the decision-maker’s needs. The incorporation of the cost criterion into the decision maker’s preferences calculation, and the solution assessment calculation, deprives the decision-maker of the ability to calculate the financial result of the decision he must make. A new multi-criteria decision making with cost criterion analysed at the final stage (MCDM-CCAF) method is developed based on principle of Pareto optimal decisions. It is proposed to exclude the cost cr...

Assessment of the mechanical properties of structural steels characterizing their strength and deformation parameters is an essential problem in the monitoring of structures that have been in operation for quite a long time. The properties of steel can change under the influence of loads, deformations, or temperatures. There is a problem of express determination of the steel grade used in structures—often met in the practice of civil engineering or machinery manufacturing. The article proposes the use of artificial neural networks for the classification and clustering of steel according to strength characteristics. The experimental studies of the mechanical characteristics of various steel grades were carried out, and a special device was developed for conducting tests by shock indentation of a conical indenter. A technique based on a neural network was built. The developed algorithm allows with average accuracy—over 95%—to attribute the results to the corresponding steel grade.

Based on successful international examples of collusion detection, four indicators of the collusion have been chosen and analysed in this paper. The research was done for the majority of tender procedures in the road construction industry, in Poland that was finished in 2016 with the selection of a general contractor. Based on [1, 2, 3] the following four indicators were chosen: the number of offers placed in the tender procedure, the range of bid prices being offered, exactly the same set of offerors in a few tender procedures, repeating ordering the works execution to the same contractor in a given geographical region.

In addition to cost and time management, quality management is one of the most important aspects that enable effective competition on the global construction market. Implementation of the quality management system should be carried out in a comprehensive approach, covering the manufacturing process, as well as cooperative processes. Among the cooperative processes that are highly important for the functioning of the production plant, the following ones are to be mentioned: orders and deliveries of aggregates, cement, steel, as well as the semi-finished products and components needed directly on the production line, such as the release and antiadhesive agent. A large selection of manufacturers and suppliers, as well as diversified physical and technical properties of the products offered, result in difficulties when implementing and maintaining effective ordering procedures. Numerous and difficult to predict correlations related to the use of different components in a given production series and resulting in obtaining products of potentially lower than expected quality are also not without significance. In order to improve the decision-making process by managers, the association analysis needs to be applied. It allows to find rules within the processes influenced by many factors. It helps to determine which factors appearing jointly make the process undesirably different from the expected one. The more the factors influence the quality of the process, the more difficult is the analysis made for searching the combination of factors disturbing the process. The advantages of applying association analysis are shown in the prepared case analysed hereby.

The roles of the construction process participants may vary in different countries – depending on legal regulations, tradition, the accepted practice. In this article the basic acts defining and regulating the roles of the construction process participants in Russia, Poland and Slovakia are presented. Based on these, the basic duties of the parties are discussed together with pointing the differences in these national systems. As there are some possible organizational schemes widely applied for construction processes their influence on the quality of the structures erected is described and discussed.

Predicting the compressive strength of cement-stabilized rammed earth (CSRE) using current testing machines is time-consuming and costly and may harm the environment due to the samples’ waste. This paper presents an automatic method using computer vision and deep learning to solve the problem. For this purpose, a deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) model is proposed, which was evaluated on a new in-house scanning electron microscope (SEM) image database containing 4284 images of materials with different compressive strengths. The experimental results show reasonable prediction results compared to other traditional methods, achieving 84% prediction accuracy and a small (1.5) oot Mean Square Error (RMSE). This indicates that the proposed method (with some enhancements) can be used in practice for predicting the compressive strength of CSRE samples.

Nowadays, completing the ordered construction works within the time assumed is a must for a responsible contractor. The future orders strongly depend on the opinion about a given contractor, especially about their responsibility. Completing the ordered construction works on time is one of the ways to earn the clients’ good reputation. Once the general schedule is agreed between a client and a contractor, it is necessary to prepare the detailed plan of every work execution – the technology design. It allows to assign required resources to every construction activity, thus providing further smooth operation and keeping-up with the schedule. Usually the assignment of the resources is based on deterministic values of the machinery and labor efficiency. During the phase of the work execution it occurs that – when even unnoticeable disturbances are noted – the real duration of a given scope of work is longer than planned. It leads to the conclusion that the average efficiency of the means...

The effects of the delay in construction contract execution are always negative for every party being involved. Cancelling the delays of the time schedule means the use of more production means that it was planned. It creates an additional cost. If the delays of the schedule are not cancelled, the contractor suffers from the cost increase. The penalties arisen from not keeping the milestones or the completion date are expected too. There is a trade-off: cancelling delays spending additional money now (during the contract execution) or executing a delayed contract till its end awaiting for its final settlement (showing the cost increase) and possible penalties. There is no one, correct answer how to manage a delayed construction project. There is a natural unwillingness to spend money over the budget. Nevertheless, the delayed completion date can cause much higher contractor’s expenses, than cancelling delays during the contract execution. The decisions made by the project manager de...

The process of negotiation can be analyzed considering some scientific issues (e.g. psychological, sociological). When a construction subcontract is negotiated, as it is business activity, the rational choices should be considered more than other factors influencing the decisions of the negotiating parties. A game theory supports rational decision making based on calculations, expected values and strategic choices. An experiment was carried with the participation of the students of Civil Engineering Faculty. Five different games were prepared. The students started playing with the “nature”. Then the probabilities of the “nature” strategies were introduced. Finally, they played three one-on-one sets of repetitive games. The results prove that knowing the needs of the opposite player (knowing his/her possible strategies) leads to a win-win result where the score of both players is maximized. The experiment and its result are analyzed in the paper. The multiple negotiations, and then m...

A flow-shop construction scheduling – especially for a higher number of tasks projected – requires the use of metaheuristic algorithms to find the optimal schedule. The criteria of optimality may vary as well as constraints assumed for the schedule. The paper presents base rules of the flow-shop scheduling as well as the methods of making the work of engaged brigades continuous. When the cost of work execution is analyzed, it can occur that the optimal schedule understood as providing the shortest total time of project execution or the shortest total slack times of working brigades is not the cheapest solution. The following cost generators are taken into account: a daily cost of each brigade (working or waiting for the work), the technology applied to work execution, penalties for not keeping the milestones. The model of a time-cost evaluation of the flow-shop time schedule is formulated, analyzed and discussed. For the illustration of the presented model, the exemplary flow-shop t...

Cement stabilized rammed earth (CRSE) is a sustainable, low energy consuming construction technique which utilizes inorganic soil, usually taken directly from the construction site, with a small addition of Portland cement as a building material. This technology is gaining popularity in various regions of the world, however, there are no uniform standards for designing the composition of the CSRE mixture. The main goal of this article is to propose a complete algorithm for designing CSRE with the use of subsoil obtained from the construction site. The article’s authors propose the use of artificial neural networks (ANN) to determine the proper proportions of soil, cement, and water in a CSRE mixture that provides sufficient compressive strength. The secondary purpose of the paper (supporting the main goal) is to prove that artificial neural networks are suitable for designing CSRE mixtures. For this purpose, compressive strength was tested on several hundred CSRE samples, with diffe...

The construction project is considered as successful as it fi nishes within planned schedule and budget. Particularly in case of linear structures and water and sewage networks, the bulk materials are among the most important positions in the project budget, which can reach even 20% of total costs. Controlling the deliveries of aggregates under construction conditions is problematic due to the difficulty of assessing the quantity of products that are not packaged in countable units. Human resources problems of these days, as well as shortening construction works time, often makes precise control of the weight of all transports impossible. Due to that facts, inspection of transports is usually limited only to visual assessment and a control of documents. The lack of reliable control of deliveries can effect in a lower transport efficiency and large discrepancies between ordered and delivered amount of aggregates. Lower transport effi ciency contributes to its cost overestimation and ...

The cost minimizing solution of the transportation problem for the location of the building machinery yard along the road under construction. This paper presents costs arisen from the everyday transport of building machinery from the yard located by the road being constructed to the place of work. These costs are not directly associated with the income creating. The optimal choice of the place for the machinery yard can substantially lower these costs. The following two methods of finding the optimal place were proposed: based on the shortest distance and based on the lowest cost of building machinery self--transport. They were calculated for the exemplary data. Applying the method based on the lowest cost allows finding more than one location of machinery yard. The cost of applying more than one yard can reduce much more the costs of a construction site.

ABSTRACT Paper discussed the needs of potential users of financial projections concerning results of Polish construction and building industry, summarized sales and summarized profit in particular. Authors proposed utilization of MLP neural networks according to their prediction abilities. A set of nets were build, and calculation were undertaken based on data obtained from Polish statistical office. Received results – financial predictions – were discussed focusing on errors made by STATISTICA 10 software used for calculations. The proposed MLP neural networks – in the present shape – was disqualified for these kind of prediction, however some valuable results were observed, so the directions of modifications of MLP neural networks were discussed and research will be continued.

Cement-stabilized rammed earth (CSRE) is a sustainable construction material. The use of it allows for economizing on the cost of a structure. These two properties of CSRE are based on the fact that the soil used for the rammed mixture is usually dug close to the construction site, so it has random characteristics. That is the reason for the lack of widely accepted prescriptions for CSRE mixture, which could ascertain high enough compressive strength. Therefore, assessing which components of CSRE have the highest impact on its compressive strength becomes an important issue. There are three machine learning regression tools, i.e., artificial neural networks, decision tree, and random forest, used for predicting the compressive strength based on the relative content of CSRE composites (clay, silt, sand, gravel, cement, and water content). The database consisted of 434 samples of CSRE, which were prepared and crushed for testing purposes. Relatively low prediction errors of aforementi...

The other method was to utilize artificial neural networks predictive capabilities enriched by the fuzzy sets theory. The multiple output from ANN was defined as membership function values. The use of the fuzzy sets theory – the process of defuzzification – helps to classify the tender procedures to the sets of different level of risk (of collusion appearance). The results achieved in these two separate processes are compared and discussed. The created tool can be applied for the future tender procedures as a pre-test of a collusion appearance.

The problem of minimizing transport cost is currently being solved in almost every branch of industry and commerce. The companies economize in every aspect of their activities in order to be competitive i.e. to survive. The areas of competition are quality of a product, the brand, after-sale service and other. Even if the price level is not a subject to compete (the strong brand and high quality provided are the base of the policy of high prices), economizing on transport cost makes a profi t higher. The public sector of the construction industry is a different one. The quality is defi ned in a tender documentation. The price is the factor that usually infl uences the most the decision of the client concerning the choice of contractor. Every possibility of cost-lowering gives the potential contractor chance of winning a contract and making the profi t (Ahmed, Sultana, Khan & Uddin, 2017). Contractors executing “design and build” contract often suffer from the costs increase arisen f...

A high monetary value of the construction projects is one of the reasons of frequent disputes between a general contractor (GC) and a client. A construction site is a unique, one-time, and single-product factory with many parties involved and dependent on each other. The organizational dependencies and their complexity make any fault or mistake propagate and influence the final result (delays, cost overruns). The constant will of the parties involved results in completing a construction object. The cost increase, over the expected level, may cause settlements between parties difficult and lead to disputes that often finish in a court. Such decision of taking a client to a court may influence the future relations with a client, the trademark of the GC, as well as, its finance. To ascertain the correctness of the decision of this kind, the machine learning tools as decision trees (DT) and artificial neural networks (ANN) are applied to predict the result of a dispute. The dataset of a...

It is widely known that a construction project can be described as a success if it is completed on time and without cost overrun. As the strong correlation between delay in completion date of construction projects and cost overruns exists, it is necessary to manage the risk of a delay from the very beginning: even before the start of works execution. The data concerning 139 construction contracts of the highway sections already completed, as well as their completion dates, were collected. The twelve types of data were chosen based on the criterion of time of appearance: they should be known before the start of construction works. Most of the contracts' properties have continuous values, and these had to be converted to the binary values. With the use of the association analysis, it is possible to find the combination of properties of the construction contracts that have produced significant delays in completion date in large part of analysed and already completed contracts. For ...
