Should we solve geometry problems using calculators? This study identified the effect of using (and not using) calculators during calculations on geometry problems sets, as well as the perceived impact on the use of calculators based on students’, parents’ and school administrators’ perception in a school in Bangkok, Thailand. This study combined both qualitative (survey and interview) and quantitative techniques (experiment) to address the research problem. Findings revealed that the performance of students who used calculators in the experiment did not significantly differ with those who did not which suggests that non-usage of calculators will not affect solving geometry problems, at least in the context of Thai Math education. Further, survey showed that students only used calculators ‘sometimes’ outside class and gave diverse responses when asked why. Interview with parents, students and administrators showed transcript extracts mostly on their agreement to use calculators in g...

This study aimed to correlate three variables, namely, self-efficacy of the students, learning styles of the students, and their aptitude test results in the 2015 National Career Assessment Examination to the Senior High School Program. The study employed quantitative-survey research. The survey questionnaire was validated and pilot-tested prior the administration. Aptitude test results in the NCAE were grouped into five (5) based on their percentile rank of each student (n=260) and were subjected to chi-square test of independence across the strand to determine significant relationship between the aptitude level and the strand they are enrolled in. Aptitude test results were taken from the individual NCAE result available. The enrolment profile showed that the Senior High School Population (n=260) was largely fifteen-to-sixteen-aged female students. Findings revealed that, as to the 2015 NCAE test results, those enrolled under STEM and ABM had an average aptitude while those enroll...

Curriculum evaluation in the perspectives of student-clienteles is a significant and healthy approach to curriculum improvement. This paper aimed to post-evaluate insights of Filipino college students on the implementation of K to 12 in the Philippines, especially on the following study variables: Whether K to 12 has prepared students for college or not, whether K to 12 subjects are aligned with college course or not, whether Spiral Progression helped for college science and math mastery or not, and their belief of becoming an engineer despite all K to 12 issues they experienced. Involving 361 student-respondents in one highly performing university in the Philippines, and using a validated survey-questionnaire as data-gathering instrument, the researcher found that the proportion of K-to-12-Prepared college students equal with the K-to-12-Not-Prepared college students, and that majority of the respondents believe that the K to 12 subjects they took in senior high school are aligned ...

Teratogenesis is a prenatal toxicity characterized by structural or functional defects in the developing embryo or fetus. It also includes mutations, growth retardation and death of the embryo. Of all the birth defects, teratogens constitute to about 10% and other factors include genetic defects, infection and toxins. The teratogenicity of corn fungus may possibly contribute to rapid development of different defects on embryos which is caused by teratogens. In this study, the researcher used ethanol, agar, corn cobs, scalpel, petri dishes, syringes, pressure cooker, parafilm, and an incubator. Duck eggs were used for assaying. Treatments were prepared: 𝑇0 for untreated eggs, 𝑇1 to 𝑇3 involved the use of reagents which were ethanol, fungi, and ethanol-fungi mixture respectively. Each setup was performed in 5 trials. The duck eggs were incubated for 7 days and were injected with 500 𝜇𝐿 of reagents. The treated eggs were again incubated for 14 days. After incubation, ducklings and embr...

Gender influence on research competency, though important, is less explored compared with other academic disciplines. This study aimed to compare both genders in their perceived level of research competency. The study utilized a descriptive-status research design which employed a validated survey questionnaire administered digitally all over the Philippines from October to November 2020. Participated in by 1, 220 participants from 9 regions and 27 provinces in the Philippines, the study revealed that both genders consider themselves as ‘Highly Competent’ in research, with the female respondents more competent than the male respondents in terms of writing. Findings revealed areas of strength and weaknesses in research instruction and national and international implications for these findings were noted. The authors recommended several measures to address these issues.

A researcher cannot publish what he has not written, and he cannot write what he has not read – that is how vital the central role of reading is in a researcher’s academic life. This study, an excerpt, aimed to identify the publishing practices among senior multidisciplinary researchers by analysing the originality reports of their published articles generated through the Turnitin.com software. Findings showed that the published articles are organized and intact and are structured using the IMRAD format. Quantitative analysis showed that while there was a moderate positive correlation,  there is no significant difference between the total number of references listed in the published articles and with their generated similarity indices. Statistical analysis revealed that the published articles serving as ‘document transcripts’ had more similarity from internet-based articles rather than from publication-based sources. While the findings agree with similar reviewed studies that public...

This pioneering study addresses the need for practical tools which could be used by beginning researchers in generating research topics. The objectives of this study are to present the use of the START Approach as an instructional innovation for classroom instruction in a research subject and to identify some themes on its strengths and weaknesses through content analysis of coded templates known as CST or Coded START Templates. Employing content analysis on forty-eight (48) CST taken as samples from a national training on research and using quantitative data analysis on selected content variables, findings revealed that majority of the CST have followed the writing pattern prescribed in the approach, have shown that majority of these templates have ‘Very Highly Applied’ the approach, and have reported that the thoughts in the CST as coded responses are ‘Very Highly Continuous’. Using content analysis, the START Approach was found to display strengths in its implementation which inc...

This paper aimed to analyze the publication outputs in nuclear science and technology of the Philippines from 1956 to 2020 using bibliometric analysis. The researcher reviewed 4, 620 publications written about the Philippine’s nuclear science and technology using the INIS Database. Findings showed that majority of the publications are merely general information and annual reports and there are very few empirical studies conducted. Publication is fluctuating per year in the 21st century although a 5-year trend analysis shows increasing number of publications since 1956. The International Atomic Energy Agency has topped the number of worldwide distribution of publications on the Philippine’s NST while United States topped all other countries. The Philippines ranked only 4th with the highest number of publications about its very own nuclear science and technology next to France. The Philippines responds to the need to disseminate information on its NST through the publication of the Ph...

Journal Management and Monitoring is not only about publishing articles both online and in print, but includes understanding by using available empirical data how published articles are making impact in the research community. This study, an excerpt, aimed to find a correlation between the abstract view and file view of fifty-three (53) published articles in a Philippine Journal from March 2019 to April 2020. Findings showed that abstracts are viewed more often than files, and that files are viewed more than they are downloaded. Results revealed that the two variables are statistically significantly correlated with a strong positive linear correlation, and a regression equation (y = 0.27x + 5.03) was developed to estimate future increase in the dependent variable, or File View. Recommendations on the revision of the Author Guidelines of the Philippines Journal as well as a Training on Abstract Writing were recommended.

Earning money for a living during pandemic becomes nearly impossible when one gets stuck at home, the need for alternative agricultural techniques is thus necessary to survive. This study attempted to compare the performance of the performance of Rice Straw Mushroom (V. volvacea) in different substrates grown in Mushroom Shelf and in Hanging Shelf. A quantitative research following experimental design was utilized in the study. A completely randomized design was also applied to the treatment and control groups. This study used corncobs (T1) and combination of corncobs and maize stem (T2) as treatment groups and banana leaves as control group. Both types of substrates were used in two mushroom propagation techniques-mushroom shelf and hanging shelf. Two Way factor ANOVA revealed that no significant difference exist on the performance of rice straw mushroom in terms of size of pileus, size of stipe and weight of basidiocarp produced on the type of substrate but significant difference was found on the type of shelf used. While a significant difference on the type of substrates and type of shelf used was both found on the performance of rice straw mushroom in terms of number of days to develop primordia. Further, Two-Way Factor ANOVA revealed no significant interaction on the type of substrate and type of shelf used on the performance of rice straw mushroom in terms of the growth parameters. In terms of Yield and Net income, control group grown in mushroom shelf obtained the highest net income as compared to other beds grown in mushroom shelf and in Hanging Shelf. Further development and improvement on the design of the hanging shelf is needed to further improve its effectivity as mushroom propagation technique is one of the recommendations given in the study. The use of the shelf for alternative agricultural technique to grow mushroom during pandemic is recommended. INTRODUCTION The trend on converting agricultural wastes into mushroom bedding substrate has been continuously gaining attention. Researchers found out that agricultural wastes is a good alternative to banana leaves or saw dust in mushroom propagation due to its high availability and cost-efficiency. It also satisfies the Sustainable Development Goals on the sustainable consumption and production. Several studies to use agricultural wastes as mushroom bedding substrates include the following: One study used maize residues (maize stalks, maize husks and maize cobs) for cultivation of oyster mushroom [10], another study used corncobs in the cultivation of Pleurotus pulmonaris [6]. Further, the use of rice straw on the cultivation of V. volvacea [7], and the use of corncobs, and combination of corncobs and maize stalk in the cultivation of rice straw mushroom [3], which is found to be a good alternative to "rice straw" as bedding substrate for V. volvacea during rainy season where rice straws are not available.

Statistical analysis revealed that the published articles serving as 'document transcripts' had more similarity from internet-based articles rather than from publication-based sources. While the findings agree with similar reviewed studies that publication sources are used less in publication practice, the study has established that senior researchers used publication-based studies more often than undergraduate researchers. Evidence that empirical studies are consulted less during publishing in multidisciplinary journals in the Philippines is conclusive. Thus, it is recommended that senior authors develop the attitude of making their research profile visible in the web by creating web-based research profile accounts.

The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of Cayenne Pepper (Capsicum annuum) as an alternative biostain compared to Safranin, tested on human cheek cells and bacterial cells in terms of staining affinity, moisture content and chemical stability. Also, it sought to determine its effectiveness when it comes to absorbance values, compared to safranin, using spectrophotometer. Quantitative proximate analysis revealed a slightly high moisture content of red bell pepper per 2.31 grams weight. Data revealed that C. annuum registered its highest absorbance rate at 400 nm while Safranin registered its highest absorbance rate at 640 nm. Pearson r showed that there is no significant relationship between the absorbance rates of C. annuum and the wavelength of light. Further, it shows that the absorbance rates of C. annuum and wavelength are strongly correlated but are still not statistically significant). However, correlation values imply a negative correlation between absorbance rates of C. annuum and wavelength which means the higher the wavelength, the lower the absorbance rates. Simply, this means that C. annuum absorb highly in high energy wavelengths. It further showed that there is no significant relationship between the absorbance rates of and are weakly correlated. Moreover, no correlation between wavelength and absorbance values of Safranin was observed but showed a rather negative correlation with wavelength and absorbance values of C. annuum that implies C. annuum biostain generally absorbs at high energy wavelengths. Also, there is no significant difference between the effectiveness of Capsicum annuum and Safranin as staining agent to the Staphyloccocus aureus. However, statistical analysis revealed significant differences between the effectiveness of C. annuum and Safranin as staining agents to E. coli and human cheek cells. The production of stain using C. annuum is recommended.

Improving academic writing is a key towards successful publishing, and assessment of pre-published write-ups is the beginning of that ending. Words have 'emotions', and the ability to control it in write-ups is an evolving industry skill. This paper aimed to profile and analyze through web-based sentiment analysis and text mining with theme generation of the scientific paper abstracts of junior researchers in the Philippines. Significant findings showed that majority of the specimen abstracts conformed with academic writing standards, and obtained a passing rating from conference judges. Sentiment Analysis revealed an equal writing behavior of junior researchers in wording abstracts positively or negatively, even if majority were found to have written abstracts neutrally. Text Mining reported the frequent use of the words 'effective' and 'potential' for positively-worded and negatively-worded conclusions of abstracts, respectively. Generating themes from these premises, thematic analysis proposed four principles of writing abstracts to attract acceptance of papers in science fairs. 'Sentheme Mining' as a research procedure was recommended, among others things, for use in future studies involving qualitative studies of paper abstracts or full articles.

Classroom teachers-from basic, secondary, collegiate to graduate levels-are not only authorized, but are capable of improving processes and products necessary for the delivery of their instruction. This study aimed to develop and validate through pilot-testing a criterionreferenced test in qualitative research for 11th graders through series of revisions based on readability index, index of difficulty, and index of discrimination. Findings revealed convincing evidence that the summative test final draft could be adopted for use by target end users in Senior High Schools. Recommendations include several other tests to measure its response to gendersensitive language and distracter analysis.
