The present essay is based on the different concepts and the related division in Greek concerning the technical termination of an unwanted pregnancy-abortion. I analyze those concepts from a historical perspective to situate them in specific social and historical conditions. I start from amvlosi –the term that indicates a criminal act and is distinguished from the legal, medical procedure of ektrosi and move forward to the use of curettage that replaces the term ektrosi in surgical boards. I aim to follow those concepts when moving into different social realms and historical periods and explore them in relation to the different social groups and political agendas they are linked with. Focusing on the Greek feminist birth control movement, I discuss the continuous gendered social conflicts that are embodied in those differentiated concepts while trying to raise concerns over identification of their content today.

For decades, science communication has been occupied with the discussion regarding democracy, equality, equity, inclusion, participation, and engagement in knowledge production and circulation processes and practices. As a continuously flourishing field, its scope has been expanded recently towards the intertwinement, interaction and intersection of the public presence of science, gender and sexuality. This paper aims to contribute to this ongoing discussion, addressing theoretical, methodological and ethical concerns that I faced when conducting research about the sociopolitical aspects of (dis)appearance of knowledge and the multiple communication practices in the case of the Greek feminist birth control movement in the 1970s and 1980s. More specifically, I draw attention to the following points: (1) the question of atypical archives; (2) the question of the concept of the public; and (3) the question of boundaries. Science communication can happen in unexpected places, especially when it is generated by marginalised social groups. The issues addressed indicate the theoretical and methodological awareness needed, and the related possibilities for prioritising inclusion and diversity in science communication. This focus could reveal the rich content of science communication as a social practice, offering tools for tracing invisible or lost herstories of production and circulation of knowledge from a historical perspective.

Haraway’s Cyborg Manifestoprompted a fruitful discussion on the classical antinomies of Enlightenment. This discussion was later adopted by Cyberfeminismwiththe aim of systematically examining the relationship between technoscience and feminism. The current paper revisits the various perspectives about the co-production of gender identities and technoscience, the constraints and affordances brought about by the intertwinement of digital transformation and cyberfeminism, and the prospects of political action in the digital era. More specifically, the paper explores the relationship between digitality and feminist thought from a historical perspective – from Cyborg to Xenofeminism– in order to display the need for an interdisciplinary approach between Cultural, Gender, and Science and Technology Studies.

Between 1976 and 1986, feminist birth control movements emerged within the Greek public sphere. Informed by the second wave of feminism, the activists involved questioned both the dominant medical knowledge by emphasizing its masculine character, as well as the various relevant decision-making processes. Thus, different social groups, by developing their own experience-based expertise, approached the issues of abortion and contraception in two distinct ways: on the one hand, autonomous feminist groups used it as a gateway both for their involvement in Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB/GYN) practices and their engagement in medical knowledge by focusing on their experiences, needs and desires, and their self-education and self-organization, while on the other hand, women’s associations and organizations perceived it as a chance to participate in the policy making process. By approaching Greek feminist birth control movements as boundary movements capable of operating both inside and outside the boundaries of science, we will examine women’s efforts to reclaim their active role in birth control. Moreover, within the framework of science communication, we will explore such movements as examples of the relationship between science and society. We will argue that the history of feminist birth control movements can be re-examined as a history of an alternative form of knowledge that correlates women with scientific ideas and practice and, moreover, science with the public. We will not only elucidate the complexity of the scientific phenomenon, but also we will highlight the presence of women in science in terms of the production and circulation of knowledge.
