Description

DISPOSABLE PAD FOR INSIDE OF BABY CLOTHES
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION 1. FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates generally to a disposable pad which is used to keep a baby's chest dry during drooling and more particularly to such a pad which is adapted to be attached exclusively to the inside of a baby's clothing to allow the clothing to absorb drooling by the baby during teething and prevents any moisture from contacting the baby's chest.
2. DESCRIPTION OF THE RELATED ART
There are numerous prior art patents which are directed to bibs of various designs. The best known prior art to applicant are U.S. Patents 3,332,547; 3,871,027; 4,306,316; 4,660,226; 4,662,698; and 5,881,382. Typically such prior art bibs utilize a layer of impermeable material which is bonded to a layer of liquid absorbing material. The layer of impermeable material typically has pressure sensitive adhesive material applied thereto and the bib is attached to the front of the clothing of the user so that the liquid absorbing material faces outermost and is utilized to absorb any liquid, food or other matter that may be spilled by the user to prevent soiling the clothing of the user. Such bibs may be utilized also by the mother during the burping of a child so that any regurgitation of a portion of previously swallowed food or drink does not strike the clothing of the mother during the burping of the baby.
In all instances known to applicant, the bibs which are disclosed in the various prior art patents are all attached to the outer surface of the clothing of the baby or the clothing of the user.
It is well known that babies drool excessively during teething between the ages of approximately three months up until as much as three years old. While this drooling occurs, the drooling will be absorbed by the clothing of the baby and without protection of any type will cause the baby's chest to become wet and under many circumstances cause the body temperature of the baby to decrease. As a result, to keep a baby's chest dry and warm, it is necessary under the circumstances of the prior art to constantly be changing the baby's top clothing. When mothers are busy, and particularly when they are out of the home, such as traveling with the baby, it is often not possible to change the baby's top clothing when it has become wet from the drooling by the baby. This may cause a rash or other inflammation to occur and will cause the baby to become irritable.
It is well known that the chest area is a major part of a baby's proprioceptive system, therefore a baby's chest needs to stay warm and be kept dry. Babies must spend a large amount of energy to stay warm if they are in a cold environment or dressed inadequately. For example, a core body temperature just one degree below normal requires babies to use 10% more oxygen. Babies cannot build up energy reserves if they are using too much energy to stay warm and babies who are sick may take longer to get better.
There is thus a need for an apparatus and a method of using the apparatus which may be utilized to keep a baby's chest dry and warm during the time that the baby is drooling during the teething process.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The present invention is directed to a disposable pad adapted exclusively to be attached to the inside of a baby's clothing to keep the baby's chest dry during drooling by the baby and the pad includes a layer of impermeable material having an adhesive material secured thereto at least adjacent the top and bottom thereof for attaching the pad to the inside of the baby's clothing and a layer of soft flexible breathable material which is coextensive with the impermeable layer and a layer of absorbent material sandwiched between and coextensive with the impermeable layer of material and the layer of breathable material.
The present invention also includes the method of using the disposable pad by providing the pad including the layer of absorbent material sandwiched between the soft flexible layer of material and the layer of impermeable material, providing the clothing for the baby, attaching the pad to the inside of the baby's clothing at the chest area with the adhesive material and placing the baby's clothing with the pad attached on the clothing with the soft flexible material against the baby's chest thereby allowing the baby's clothing to absorb the drooling but preventing any moisture from contacting the baby. Alternatively the disposable pad may be attached to the inside of the baby's clothing after the baby is dressed and starts drooling.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
Referring now more particularly to the drawings and specifically to Figure 1 , a pad 10 constructed in accordance with the principles of the present invention is illustrated. The pad 10 includes a layer 12 of impermeable material such for example as a plastic material such as polyethylene, polypropylene or similar plastic material which is coextensive with a first surface 13 of the pad 10. The layer 12 of impermeable material has adhesive material as shown at 14, 15, 16, 17, 18 and 20 attached to the surface 22 thereof. The adhesive material may be any pressure sensitive adhesive that is well known to the art and may, for example, include a double sided strip of adhesive material or a double coated polyester Fas Tape 8306 as sold by Avery Dennison. The adhesive layers 14 through 20 are typically covered with a layer of relief paper which is removed so that the adhesive layer becomes available for attaching the pad 10 to the inner surface of the baby's clothing particularly about the chest area. As is illustrated in Figure 1, the adhesive material is secured to the layer 12 of impermeable material adjacent the top 24 and the bottom 26 and to the wing extensions 19 and 21 of the pad 10. Although the adhesive material is shown in segments such as 14, 15, 16, 17, 18 and 20, it should be understood that the adhesive material may extend completely across the pad 10 and may also be disposed along the sides if such is desired so that the pad can be securely fastened to the inside of the baby's clothing particularly at the chest area to keep the baby's chest dry. The pad 10 is not limited to the shape or size illustrated in Fig. 1. It should be understood that the pad may be configured to accommodate the size and age of the baby and may take any geometric configuration desired so long as it can be attached to the inside of the baby's clothes to keep the baby's chest protected from the baby drooling.
By reference now more specifically to Figure 2 there is illustrated a cross-sectional view of the pad 10. Figure 2 illustrates the layer 12 of impermeable material with the layers 14 and 20 of the adhesive material attached thereto. There is also provided a layer 28 of soft flexible breathable material which is coextensive with the second surface 29 of the pad 10 and with the layer 12 of impermeable material. The layer of soft flexible breathable material may be an absorbent material which promotes dryness and helps keep the baby's chest dry. Such material may be similar to diaper material and it is breathable and since it is soft and flexible it is comfortable against the surface of the baby's chest. Sandwiched between the impermeable layer 12 and the layer of flexible material 28 is a layer 30 of absorbent material and it is coextensive with the impermeable layer of material 12 and the breathable layer of material 28. The three layers of material are bonded together to form the pad 10. The layer of absorbent material may be formed of cloth, paper or other similar materials and is used to absorb any moisture that may become present and move through the layer of flexible breathable material 28. The pad 10 may also have essential oils or other similar ingredients contained therein to assist in alleviating congestion that may be affecting the baby. The essential oils may also have an aroma therapy effect and provide antibacterial and antiviral effects.
As shown in Figure 3, a baby's clothing 32 is illustrated with the pad 10 affixed to the inside of the clothing 32 as evidenced by the pad and the adhesive material being shown in dashed lines. The pad 10 is attached by removing the protective layer from the adhesive material and then attaching the pad 10 to the inside 34 of the baby's clothing. In this manner, the layer 28 of the soft flexible breathable material is placed against the chest of the baby thereby keeping the baby dry, warm and comfortable. The layer 12 of impermeable material is against the interior surface of the baby's clothing. It will be recognized that the baby, when it drools, will have the drooling collected by the surface of the baby's clothing, however, the wetness will not penetrate to the baby's chest because of the impermeable layer of material 12. Referring now more particularly to Figure 4, there is shown the various steps in the method of using the pad as illustrated in Figures 1 and 2. As is shown in Figure 4, there is provided a pad 36 which includes the layer of adsorbent material sandwiched between a soft flexible layer of material and a layer of impermeable with the layer of impermeable material having an adhesive material secured thereto. There is then provided clothing 38 of the baby. The pad is then attached as shown at 40 to the interior surface of the baby's clothing utilizing the adhesive which is on the impermeable layer. Thereafter, as shown at 42, the clothes are attached to the baby with the layer of soft flexible material against the baby's chest and the layer of impermeable material adjacent the interior surface of the baby's clothing. By so doing, the soft flexible material is against the baby's chest, allowing the baby's clothing to absorb the drooling, but preventing any moisture from the drooling contacting the baby because of the layer of impermeable material.
An alternative method of using the pad is illustrated in Fig. 5, reference to which is hereby made. As therein shown at 44, the baby is already dressed in its clothes, for example, when the mother is away from home or traveling such as on an airplane or the like. Under the circumstances, if the baby is at the teething stage, it will start drooling as shown at 46. As a result of the drooling, the baby's clothing will become wet. When this happens, the pad can be attached to the inside of the baby's clothes as shown at 48 with the soft layer 28 against the baby's chest and the impermeable layer 12 against the inside of the clothes so that the clothes absorb the drooling and the baby stays dry and warm.
There has thus been disclosed a pad which is adapted to be attached exclusively to the inside of a baby's clothing and is utilized to keep the baby's chest dry during drooling by the baby, particularly during the teething process of the baby.
