Definitions

  • THIS invention relates to an acoustic wear sensor, and more particularly but not exclusively, to an acoustic wear sensor forming part of a brake pad of a disc brake arrangement.
  • a braking system is a critical part of any wheel-driven vehicle, and is used for slowing or stopping the rotation of a wheel that is in motion.
  • One type of brake arrangement is a disc brake arrangement, which comprises a disc that is connected to a wheel, and brake pads that are mounted on a brake caliper, and which can selectively be forced into abutment with the disc so as to slow the wheel down by way of friction.
  • a brake pad typically comprises a backing plate made from a suitable metal onto which friction material or compound is deposited. In use the friction material is urged against the metal disc, thus resulting in gradual wear of friction material. Brake pads must therefore be replaced regularly, and some brake pads are accordingly provided with a mechanism that will alert the drive to the need for replacement.
  • an acoustic wear sensor which is typically in the form of a thin tab of metal that engages the discs when the brake pad material has worn away to a predetermined level, and in so doing emitting a mechanically induced audible squeal, but without causing damage to the disc.
