Definitions
- THIS invention relates to an acoustic wear sensor, and more particularly but not exclusively, to an acoustic wear sensor forming part of a brake pad of a disc brake arrangement.
- a braking system is a critical part of any wheel-driven vehicle, and is used for slowing or stopping the rotation of a wheel that is in motion.
- One type of brake arrangement is a disc brake arrangement, which comprises a disc that is connected to a wheel, and brake pads that are mounted on a brake caliper, and which can selectively be forced into abutment with the disc so as to slow the wheel down by way of friction.
- a brake pad typically comprises a backing plate made from a suitable metal onto which friction material or compound is deposited. In use the friction material is urged against the metal disc, thus resulting in gradual wear of friction material. Brake pads must therefore be replaced regularly, and some brake pads are accordingly provided with a mechanism that will alert the drive to the need for replacement.
- an acoustic wear sensor which is typically in the form of a thin tab of metal that engages the discs when the brake pad material has worn away to a predetermined level, and in so doing emitting a mechanically induced audible squeal, but without causing damage to the disc.
- acoustic wear sensor typically in the form of a thin tab of metal that engages the discs when the brake pad material has worn away to a predetermined level, and in so doing emitting a mechanically induced audible squeal, but without causing damage to the disc.
- an acoustic wear sensor including:
- an elongate metal body having a first leg and a second leg, with the body being shaped in order for the first leg and the second leg to overlie one another;
- the first leg including a jaw formation suitable for engaging a backing plate of a brake pad, the jaw formation comprising a first jaw member and a second jaw member;
- the first jaw member is formed by an end of the first leg being bent transversely relative to the first leg; and the second jaw member is formed by a section of the first leg being partially separated from the first leg and bent into a cantilevered configuration relative to the first leg, in order for the second jaw member and the first jaw member to at least partially oppose one another so as to define the jaw formation.
- first leg There is provided for sides of the first leg to terminate in shoulder formations so as to increase a stiffness of the first leg.
- the first jaw member may include tapered barb formations extending sideways from the jaw member for engaging friction material of the brake pad.
- the second jaw member may include a barb formation extending toward the first jaw member for in use engaging a receiving aperture provided in a base plate of the brake pad.
- a proximal zone of the body that connects the first leg and the second leg may be formed into a scroll in order to provide a degree of resilience between the second leg and the first leg.
- At least one groove to be provided in a surface of the second leg member.
- a brake pad including:
- the backing plate may include a receiving aperture for receiving a barb formation extending from a second jaw member of the acoustic wear sensor.
- the friction compound may include a recessed section for receiving and end of a first jaw member of the acoustic wear sensor.
- the recessed section and the first jaw member are complementary configured and dimensioned in order for barb formations extending from the first jaw member to bite into the friction material defining a wall of the recessed section.
- Figure 1 is a rear perspective view of an acoustic wear sensor in accordance with the invention.
- Figure 2 is a front perspective view of the acoustic wear sensor of
- Figure 3 is a bottom perspective view of a brake pad incorporating the wear sensor of Figures 1 and 2;
- Figure 4 is a top perspective view of the brake pad of Figure 3.
- a non-limiting example of an acoustic wear sensor in accordance with the invention is generally indicated by reference numeral 10.
- the acoustic wear sensor 10 is manufactured from an integral section of elongate sheet metal, and comprises a first leg 30, a second leg 50 and an intermediate proximal zone 40.
- the first leg 30 includes an end zone 31 that terminates in a first jaw formation 32.
- the first jaw formation 32 is formed by bending a distal end of the first leg 30 substantially perpendicularly away from the first leg 30, and furthermore includes two oppositely directed barb formations 33 extending sideways therefrom.
- a second jaw formation 34 is also integrally formed with the first leg 30, and is formed by forming a U-shaped slot in the first leg 30, followed by bending the section of material substantially perpendicularly away from the first leg 30, so that the first jaw formation 32 and the second jaw formation 34 are substantially parallel.
- a barb formation 35 is also formed in the second jaw formation, and protrudes from the second jaw formation 34 on the side facing the first jaw formation 32.
- Opposing edges of the first leg 30 terminate in shoulder formations 36, which increase the area moment of inertia of the first leg 30. This allows for the use of a material of reduced gauge, whilst also ensuring that the first leg 30 remains structurally sound despite the second jaw formation 34 being formed from part of the body of the first leg 30.
- the shoulders 36 also define a housing in which the second leg 50 is located.
- the second leg 50 overlies the first leg 30, is formed by bending the elongate body at a proximal zone 40 thereof.
- the proximal zone is bent with a relatively large radius so as to form a scroll that increases the resilience of the body.
- the second leg 50 terminates in an end 51 that protrudes beyond the first jaw formation 32 of the first leg 30.
- one or more grooves 52 may be provided in the second leg 50 in order to manipulate the harmonic characteristics of the wear sensor.
- the wear sensor 10 is used with a brake pad 60 that has been specifically configured for receiving the wear sensor 10. More particularly, a backing plate 61 of the brake pad 60 includes a receiving recess (not shown) for receiving the barb formation 35 extending from the second jaw formation 34, and the friction material 62 bonded to the backing plate 61 includes a recessed zone 63 for receiving the first jaw formation 32.
- the first jaw formation 32 and the recessed zone 63 are configured and dimensioned in order for the barb formations 33 extending from the sides of first jaw formation 32 to bite into the friction material, thus further enhancing the engagement of the wear sensor 10 to the brake pad 60.
