Definitions
- the present invention relates to tanks for storage and transportation of fluids under pressure such as hydrocarbons and low temperature liquefied natural gas. Background of the invention
- Pressure vessels may theoretically be almost any shape, but shapes made of sections of spheres, cylinders, and cones are usually employed.
- a common design is a cylinder with end caps called heads. Head shapes are frequently either hemispherical or dished (torispherical).
- a sphere would be the optimal shape of a pressure vessel with regards to containing pressure loads.
- a spherical shape is difficult to manufacture, therefore expensive, and in the case of transportation not effective for utilisation of available volume of a transportation vessel.
- WO 2006/001711 A2 discloses prismatic tanks made up of a shell in the form of a sandwich structure comprising two surface sheet layers of metal or a material with similar properties and a core between the surface sheets transferring loads between the sheets, comprising of a material or a set of ribs or webs extending between the two sheets, anchored by perpendicular horizontal tension stays. This is the current technology for tanks with a sandwich construction.
- This structure provides a double, liquid tight, barrier and affords the possibility of detecting gas in between the two surface sheets as well as allowing pressure testing of the void between the sheets.
- This provides enhanced safety, but the major advantage of the sandwich construction is that it is structurally highly efficient.
- the shell of said tanks is anchored by perpendicular horizontal tension stays, and is not suited for storage or transportation of fluids under pressure.
- the object of the current invention is to provide a solution enabling the use of prismatic tanks, for instance tanks such as described in WO 2006/001711 A2, as pressure vessels. Summary of the invention
- the present invention provides a prismatic tank for storing fluid under pressure, the tank comprises external plates, forming at least part of a roof, wall or floor, and where at least part of the external plate comprises a sandwich structure and comprising an internal structure formed as a tension support and/or anchoring for the external plates.
- Said tank has tension stays in three perpendicular directions which allow internal pressure to be confined.
- the tension stays are preferably made up of beams having an H-shaped cross section.
- the prismatic tank comprises tension stays which are interconnected, preferably by brackets.
- the sandwich structure of the tank comprises elements having a rigid and a flexible section.
- the elements of the sandwich structure of the tank have an external rib for attachment to the tension stays.
- the attachment of the external rib to the tension stays is by means of anchoring said tension stays to brackets welded to the rib.
- said rib is substantially T-shaped.
- plates are connected to the ribs to reinforce the corners of the tank where the ribs are parallel to the corners.
- brackets are connected to the ribs to reinforce the corners of the tank where the ribs are perpendicular to the corners.
- a vessel suitable for storage and transportation of fluids under pressure such as hydrocarbons and low temperature liquefied natural gas
- the vessel may also include web frames to resist unbalanced racking loads.
- the sandwich walls, floor and roof of the vessel according to the invention comprises panels preferably made up from extruded beam elements.
- Tension stays also provide a means by which sloshing forces due to earthquake or wave load may be abated.
- Figure 1 shows a cross section of one embodiment of an extruded beam element used in the construction of the double skin panels making up the external shell of the pressure vessel.
- Figure 2 shows an isometric view of one corner section of a tank with tension beams and brackets.
- FIG. 3 shows an isometric view of the internal structure of a pressure vessel.
- Figure 1 shows a cross section of one embodiment of an extruded beam element used in the construction of the double skin panels making up the external shell of the pressure vessel.
- a pattern of triangulated plates combined with alternate sections with plate connections provide a sandwich structure.
- the triangulated section of the extruded beam element includes horizontal flange plates 5, inclined plates 1 as well as vertical plates 3. Sections of the extrusion consist of horizontal flange plates only 2.
- the extrusion also includes a rib 4 having a small flange.
- the rib provides a means of attaching brackets 8 by welding, to which brackets tension stays 6 may be anchored.
- the small flange on the rib 4 provides a means of guiding automatic welding equipment.
- FIG. 2 shows an isometric view of a corner section of a pressure vessel according to the invention.
- Tension stays 6 are in the shape of an H-extrusion and are connected to ribs 4 situated on the extruded beam elements 9 with brackets 8.
- Forged corner brackets 7 are also connected to the ribs of the beam elements 9. Where the ribs of the beam elements are parallel to the corners, plates 10 are connected to the ribs to reinforce the corners.
- the tension stays 6 are constructed in a matrix made up of perpendicular horizontal and vertical H-extrusions. By having both horizontal and vertical tension stays the shell of the tank is able to balance pressure loads in all directions.
- the tension stays 6 may also be interconnected by using for instance bolted or welded brackets 11.
- Figure 3 shows a perspective view of the internal structure including tension stays 6 as well as brackets 11 and plates 10 reinforcing corners 7.
- the double skin outer shell of the tank also described as a sandwich structure, is described as being made up of beam elements as shown in figure 1.
- Other beam elements known in the art for the construction of sandwich structures, may also be used in the construction of shells suitable for tanks according to the present invention.
