Abstract

Disclosed is a novel diamine which has an effect of increasing the pretilt angle of a liquid crystal when used as a raw material for a liquid crystal aligning agent. This diamine enables to vertically align a liquid crystal even when used in a small amount. In addition, this diamine hardly precipitates even when a poor solvent is mixed in a liquid crystal aligning agent solution for improving coatability of the agent. Specifically disclosed is a diamine represented by the following formula (1). (1) (In the formula (1), R1 represents a phenylene or a cyclohexylene; and R2 represents an alkyl group having 3-12 carbon atoms, a fluoroalkyl group having 3-12 carbon atoms, an alkoxy group having 3-12 carbon atoms or a fluoroalkoxy group having 3-12 carbon atoms.)
