Abstract

In a process for producing high-strength sintered parts, a water-atomized and reduction-annealed powdered steel mixed with 0.3 to 0.7 wt.% of graphite powder is compressed in a mould to form compacts, which are then sintered at a temperature between 1120 and 1280 °C, cooled, hardened and annealed. In order to obtain a process for producing high-strength sintered parts which can nevertheless be hardened without being quenched in an oil bath, the powdered steel has the following composition: 0.02 % C, not more than 0.03 % Si, 0.05 - 0.25 % Mn, 2.5 - 5.0 % Ni, 0.2 - 1.5 % Mo, the remainder being iron and usual impurities; the compacts are compressed to at least 6.9 g/cm3; the compacts are cooled from the sintering temperature under a gas shower arranged in the cooling zone of the sintering furnace; and the final annealing is carried out at temperatures between 180 and 500 °C for 30 to 90 minutes.
