UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AXEL WELIN, Ol" LONDON, ENGLAND, ASSIGNOR TO WELIN QUADRANTDAVIT, OF NEW- YORK,
N. Y., A CORPORATIONA OF NEW YORK.
APPARATUS FOR RAISING AND'LOW'ERING SmPS BOATS.
T o all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, AXEL WELIN, engineer, a subject of the Norway, residin at Garfordstreet, in the city of London, n'gland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in A aratus for Raising and Lowering S 1ps Boats, of which the following is a specification.
According to this invention the da'vt turns about a center moving along guides, and its lower end is in the form of a toothed quadrant, preferably circular, rolling on a rack. The weight of the boatand its contents tent? to make the quadrants roll on the racks, in'lining the davits more and'more and at the same time moving them forward. Each davit carries a pawl engaging with a rack in order vto preventthe davits from being brought back by the rolling of the ship, or the motion of the davit may be controlled by a screw or other means. If the davits are curved and inboard of the boat, they, need not be at the ends of the boat.
Figures l and 2 are side elevations of davitseonstructed according to this invention. Fig. y3 is an elevation and Fig. 4t a plan of the chocks employed.
a is the davit, carrying a pin b, running between guides 0. b
In Fig. 1 the in b works in a block d, sliding between tlie guides, while in Fig. E? the, pin is in the form of between the guides.
e' is a toothed quadrant. forming the lower partof the cla-vit, and f is arack on which it rolls. l
In .F ig. 1 the motion is controlled by the screw working in a nut formed by a .lug on the block cl', while in Fig. 2 the outward motion is controlled by the rope 71., and the davit is prevented from being swung back by the rolling of the ship by the pawl 7c, which gears With the rack l.
The chock m is xed and supports one King of Sweden' and a roller running end of the chock n, whose other end is sup voutward it pushes the chock n with it into the position shown in dotted' lines in Frig. 3..

` segment at the lower end o von which the segment can nen-:sued June 22, 1909. Application for reissue led`December'2, 1907.
l In cases where the apparatus may be iii danger ofl etting covered by ice a hole is bored lengt wise through the body of the rack and connectedy with asteam-pipe. By this means the ice is melted and the gear kept in'working order.
What I claim is l. The combinationy of a., davit, a pivot about which the davit can turn, guides for the pivot, a toothed segment at the lower end of the davit, and a rack on which the segment can roll..
2. The combination of a davt, a pivot about which the davit -can'turn, guides for the pivot, means for controlling `the movement of the pivot in theguides, a* toothed segment. at. thelower end of the davit, and a rack on whichjthe segment can roll. Y
3. The combi'nation of a davit, a' pivot rying the pivot, uides for 'the block, Aa nut fixed to the blocl, a nut,a toothed segment at the lower end'of the davit, ,and a rack on which the segment can roll. 4
4. The combination of a davit, means for moving the top of the davit outward, a stationary chock, a second chock supported at one end by the first, .and links supporting` the other end ofthe second chock.
5. The combination about which the davit the pivot, a toothed 'segment at the lower end ot' the davit, a rack on lwhich the segment can roll, a stationary chock, a second chock, supported at oneend bythe first, and links supporting the other end of the Asecond chock. y
G. The combination of a davit, apivot about which the davit can turn, guides for the pivot, means ment of the pivot in the uides, a toothed ig the davit, a rack roll, a stationary chock, a second chock supported at one end screw working in 'theof a davit, a pivotA can turn, guides for for controlling the move` by the first, and links supporting theother end of the second chock. A
7. The combination of 'a davit, a pivot about which the davit can turn, a block carrying the pivot,.guides for the block, a nut i fixed to the block, a screw working in the nut, a toothed segment at the lower end of `the davit, a rack on which the i ent can Y roll, a stationary chock, a second c ock su `l`ported' at one end by the rstfand 1in s supporting the other` end of the second chock. 5 8. The combination of a davit turning about a center and providedA with. a lower ption having a curved lower surface', a
base on which said curved surface rolls,
means for preventin said curved surface 10 from l slipping on sald base and guides to the davit.
prevntuhdesirablesidewise movement of v In ttimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand 1n the presence of two subscrlblng witnesses.- k
A AXEL WELIN.
