This invention comprises improvements in or connected with boat lowering gear of the type in which the davits are pivoted at their bases to the deck or other suitable part of the ship.
The object of the present invention is to provide in addition to the gravity efort due to the life boat being outboard suspended to the pivoted deck connection of the davit members, of a mechanical aid to assisil the movement of the davits in unforeseen circumstances.
Referring to the drawings- Figure l is an end view of a boat lowering gear according to this invention, whilst,
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the gear shown in Figure l, showing one only of the davits.
In carrying the present invention into practice as shown upon the accompanying drawings, the davit 4 is pivotally connected to the deck or other suitable part of the ship by means of the deck fitting 5.
Pivotally connected to the deck fitting 6 is the strut I which is adapted to co-act with the davit 4. The upper part of this strut is formed with two side plates 8 which are adapted to embrace the davit 4.. Mounted between the side plates 8 are rollers 9 which are adapted to engage the two side faces of the davit 4.
Mounted on the davit 4 is a bracket Ill in which is rotatably mounted the worm II, which worm is adapted to engage the segmental worm wheel I2 which is rotatably mounted on the davit 4. Keyed to the shaft I3 on which the segment tal Worm wheel I2 is secured is a toggle link comprising the link I4 which in turn is pivotally connected to the link I5 which is pivotally connected to the strut 'I.
When the shaft I'I, on which the worm II is mounted, is rotated by means of a handle attached to said shaft, the worm II will cause the segmental worm wheel I2 to rotate and with it the shaft I3 to which the link I4 is keyed. When this takes place, the links I4 and I5 will extend or contract according to the direction of rotation of the shaft I1.
In Figure 1 of the drawings, a dotted position is shown, wherein the davit 4 has moved across to its maximum outboard position.
The boat I9 has mounted thereon wooden chocks 20 which are adapted to contact the davi-t 4, the inner side of the davit 4 acting as a slide.
When the davit 4 is in its fully extended or outboard position, as shown dotted in Figure 1, the roller 9 acts as a stop to prevent further movement outboard.
The boat I9 is connected to the davit 4 in the usual way, the usual raising and lowering gear I9 is provided.
Any suitable kind of lashings and quick release for such lashings are provided.
The davits 4 are preferably connected together by stays 22 in order that their movement will synchronise.
It will be seen that in boat lowering gear according to this invention as heretofore described, a simple and efficient arrangement of gear is provided for assisting the movement of the davits on their pivots to ensure that the risk of stoppage in the movement of the davits is reduced to a minimum.
I claim:
l. Improvements in or connected with boat lowering gear comprising in combination, a pivotally mounted davit, a pivotally mounted strut which is adapted to co-operate with said davit, a link connection between the davit and strut, a worm carried by the davit for operating the link connection, and a segmenta1 worm wheel to which the link connection is connected co-acting with said worm, so arranged that on the rotation of the worm the davit and strut are caused to move about their pivots, to move the davit into its outboard position.
2. Improvements in or connected with boat lowering gear comprising in combination, a pivotally mounted davit, a supporting strut for said davit the lower end of which is pivotally mounted in front of and in alignment with the davit whilst the upper end is in slidable contact with said davit, a toggle link connection between the davit and strut and gear mechanism connected to said toggle link connection to move the strut about its pivot and with it the davit into its outboard position.
3. Improvements in or connected with boat lowering gear comprising in combination, a pivotally mounted davit, a supporting strut for said davit the lower end of which is pivotally mounted in front of and in alignment with the davit whilst the upper end is in slidable contact with said davit, a toggle link connection between the davit and strut, a worm carried by the davit for operating the toggle link connection and a segmental worm wheel to which the toggle link con.. nection is connected co-acting with said worm, so arranged that on the rotation of the'worm the davit and strut are caused to move about their pivots, to move the davit into its outboard position.
