Description

099*24 AU 291 EX Design No. 9,968, dated May 8, 1877 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES MORGAN, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
DESIGN FOR A MONUMENT.
Specification forming part of Design No. 9,968, dated May 8, 1877; application filed April 27, 1877.
[Term of Patent 7 years] To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES MORGAN, of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented a Design for a Monument, of which the following is a specification The nature of my design is fully shown in the accompanying drawing, to which reference is made.
The invention refers to a design for a gravemonument; and consists, essentially, of a base with surmounting column and top vase, as more fully described hereafter.
In the drawing, A represents the base of my monument; B, the column, and O the surmounting vase. The base A consists of sev' eral steps, a b d, that diminish in size, and are connected by tapering intermediate parts a, b. The top step d is connected, by an ogee molding, 0, small step e, convex molding e, and convexo-concave shoulder 0 with the middle section or trunk f of the base, which is tapering toward the upper end, supporting a heavy top part, g. The top part 9 of the base A is made of a narrow projecting step, 9 small convex molding g concave molding g and square part 9, with central raised ridge and round top 9 projecting from the tapering main portion or step g, on which the column B rests. The column B has a square base-step, h, with corners cut 011' at suitable inclination,
that form the connection of the vase-step with the octagonal lower part of the column, com
posed of a groove, h, inclined step h concave molding h upright shaft-section h. Above the octagonal section is a round countersunk molding, h from which the plain shaft-section extends to the capital 0'. The capital t' rises, bya plain convex band, t ,60ll0ktVB molding 0', and step i from the shaft, and is cut out with rounded-off battlements 11 having central rosettes, being surmounted by a hemispherical cap, I, on which the top vase C, of suitable form, is placed, crowning thereby the column.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patcut-- The design for a monument, consisting of a base, A, formed of connected basesteps and moldings, trunk f, and enlarged top part, with tapering upper step, of a column, B, with square base-step, octagonal lower section, plain shaft, and capital, with rounded-off battlements, hemispherical cap, and surmounting vase, substantiall v as shown and described.
