Description

DESiGN. v. ,PRIGE. Sword-Hilt and Scabbard.
Patented Jan- 7,1873.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VIRGIL PRICE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
DESIGN FOR SWORD HlLT AND SCABBARD.
Specification forming part of Design No. 6,338, dated January 7, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VIRGIL Peron of the city, county, and State of New York, ave invented a new and original Design for a Sword Hilt and Scabbard, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a side view of my new sword hilt and Scabbard. Fig. 2 is a detail side view of portion of the scabbard.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to novel designs of hilt and scabbard ornamentations, to be applied more particularly to swords that are to be worn by Knights of Pythias or by Masonic orders, but which, together or singly, may also be applied to other swords. The invention consists, first, in making the hilt-knob in form of a helmet surmounted by a perched eagle, whose head is bent down to reach and hold the guard-chain, as shown in Fig. 1. The in- V vention consists, secondly, in a new shield ornalmentation at the lower central part of the hi t.
The shield is oval in form and is suspended so as to protect and conceal the upper end of the soabbard. Upon the shield is embossed in has-relief or otherwise a knight on horseback, between a castle and a tree. A spreadeagle snrrnounts the shield and serves also as a sort of guard for the hilt. The cross-arms of the hilt are ornamented with halberd and spear points, as shown. The invention further consists in the new design of the upper scabbard ornament, which is shown at the lower part of Fig. 1, and composed of the relief-figure of a knight holding a spear, and
which covers in part the device for holding ment, as shown.
VIRGIL' PRIUE.
