Description

initmi i tatee Design No. 3,834, dated February 1, 1870.
DESIGN FOR STEMS FOR GLASS-WARE.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part ofthe same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL O. RIPLEY, of Birmingham borough, in the county of Allegheny, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Design for Stems or Bases of Articles of Glass-Ware; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof', reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making a part of this specification, in which- 0 Figure 1 is a side elevation of a lamp-foot, showing my improved design for the stems of articles of glassware, and
Figure 2 is a cross-section thereof through the lines :zz-x, fig. 1.
Like letters of reference indicate like part-s in each.
My improved design for bases or stems for articles of glass-ware consists of a double stem, united bya thin web.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my improved design, I will proceed to describe the same, with particular reference to a glass lamp-foot or stem.
The foot b is of any desired shape or conformation. From a point at or near its upperend, a pair of branching stems, a a, arise, in regular or irregular form, and unite in, or at, or near the socket of the Candlestick, or
the peg c, or the bowl of the lamp, or other receptacle arranged thereon.
The mould in which the branching stems a a are formed, has a cavity, properly shaped, for forming a' thin web, cl, which connects the side branching stems a a, and, with them, forms a single stein. On this web d, any desired ornamental design may bc pressed, cnt, or engraved.
By making stems of this form, I am enabled to facilitate materially' the manufacture of them, since I can remove the articles from the mould before the side stems are fully solidified.
The web d, being comparatively thin, solidifies almost instantly, and itself then possesses sufiicient strength to hold the semi-plastic side stems aa in shape, while cooling and solidifying.
That I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The improved design for stems for glass-ware, consisting of side stems a a, united by a thin solid web, d, substantially as shown and described.
In testimonywhereof, I, the said DANIEL G. RIP- LEY, have hereunto set my hand.
Witnesses: DANIEL C. RIPLEY.
