IMPROVEMENT IN GLASS-MOLDS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 170,839, dated December 7, 1875; application led October 28, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY FRANZ, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Manufacture of Glassware; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being hadto the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is the plunger and vertical section of a mold and ring embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a section of the ring and mold, detached. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line s s, Fig. 5. Fig. 4 is a View of an article formed in the mold. My invention relates to molds for forming articles of glassware which are provided with feet or similar projecting parts; and it consists in forming cavities or pockets between the mold and ring for the reception of the glass which is to form the projections or feet of the article, whereby an article of glassware having feet or similar projections may be formed in a olie-part mold devoid of moldmarks, excepting upon the projections.

Heretofore, in the manufacture of footed articles of glassware, the hase of the article, or that portion to which the feet are attached, has been formed in a jointed mold, and as a consequence, iii addition to the ring-mark, whlch may be concealed, the lower portion of the article displaysvertical mold-marks easily detected by one familiar with glassware.

The object of the present invention is to overcome these objections by such a construction of the lnold as will conceal the necessary mold-marks, or those which cannot be avoided, thus enhancing the value of the article produced. Y

Having indicated the nature and object of my invention, 1 will now proceed to describe it, so that others skilled in the art to which it appertains may apply the same.

In the drawing, A indicates a mold, having the cavity a of whatever form or shape is desirable, the mold being tapered or curved on its outer surface, as at al, to enable the ring to be slipped into place. B is the ring, preferably slightly tapered, so as to it snugly upon the projecting mold, and supported by a shoulder, b, of the mold A.` a2 b are pockets or cavities formed around the mold, and on the inner side of the ring, and communicatin g with the mold-cavity a, so as to permit the entrance of the glass. These pockets or cavi-4 ties may be formed entirely in the side of the mold, or wholly in the ring, as may bep1e ferred, or according to the position in which the mold-mark is to be formed on the article, the only precaution to be taken being that the form and direction given to the pockets shall be such as to permit the free withdrawal of the ring. A spacev may be let't between the upper edge of mold A and ring B, as shown at c, so as toform a ring upon the article made at the point of union between the feet and bowl, and the edge ot' either the mold or ring may be serrated or otherwise formed for ornamenting the article produced. C is the usual plunger, and d a pin or similar device commonly employed for holding the parts to` gether, and causing the gures to register.

The advantages of such a construction are, that a single or one-part mold may be used, avoiding mold-marks, and at the same time the feet are formed in one with the article produced.
