4TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH HILL, ofNewark, in the county of Essex, and State otNew Jersey, have invented or produced a new and original Design for the Handles of Table-Cutlery; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making part of this specification.
This design is intended for solid metal handles, for table-cutlery, and the shape is given as hereafter described, to lessen the iveight of metal, and maintain nearly the same size of handle as usual.
The bolster a, shown in iig. 1, between the handle and the knife-blade, fork, or other article of tablc-cutlery, may be of any desired shape, as it does not form any part of my design.
The design of my'handle is shown in the drawing, the general outline of the handle being represented in the side view, Figure 1, and the cross sectional shape at the line as z, being shown in Figure 2, at yy, in Figure 3, and at z z in-Fignre 4.
The general shape ofthe handle will, from the drawing, be seen to be us follows: The outline ofthe handle is that of straight or nearly straight sides, slightly diverging from the point of union of the handle with the bolster, to the curved end b, and the top and bottom edges ofthe handle are rounded.
The sides of the handle gradually slope from the elliptical part, iig. 2, to the grooves c c, iig. 3, and these are deeper and wider towards the end of the handle where said grooves terminate as coved ends.
This handle may be made ci' steel or other metal.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
`The designv of the shape and configuration ofthe handle of table-cutlery, substantially as described, and as shown in the drawing.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto sot my signature, this twenty-fifth day of June, 1868.
JOSEPH HILL.
