UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MOSES C. JOHNSON, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE HELIX .GEAR COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
DESIGN l-OR A GEARlNG-COVER F R VEHICLE-FRAMES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No; 31,322, dated August 1, 1899.
Application filed July 5, 1899. Serial No. 7225879. Term ofpatent 14 years.
To all whom itmay concern:
Be it known that I, MOSES O. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and original Design for a Gearing-Cover for Vefaicle-Frames; and I do hereby declare the ollowing, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-
Figure 1, a view in side elevation of a gearing-cover; Fig. 2, a view in front elevation of the gearing-cover, and Fig. 3 a View in rear elevation of the same.
My invention relates to a design for covers for gearing, which as a whole is a special article of manufacture, and, when connected to or forming part of the frame of a bicycle or like vehicle, includes the covers for the crankshaft, the gearing connecting shaft, and the rear-wheel gear; and said invention consists in the configuration of the structure, as hereinafter described, and shown in the drawings.
The structure as a whole presents, when viewed in side elevation, an elongated portion a, terminating at the front end in the circular enlargement Z) and at the rear end in a smaller circular enlargement c, the central line of the portion a being arranged with ref erence to the parts I) 0. Below that part of the structure denoted by (L, b, and 0 another elongated portion 01 is located, the enlarged ends 6 and fof this latter portion merging into the outlines of the parts I) and c. A marked feature of this structure is the location of the substantially cylindrical parts e and f immediately below the cylindrical parts I) and c.
The part b is cylindrical in outline, with one part 1) smaller in diameter than the front portion under which the part a is located, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The partc is a short cylinder the walls of which merge into the walls of the part f below it. A marked feature of the design is the transverse arrangement of these short cylinders, which differ in diameter and are arranged at substantially right angles to each other.
The essential feature of the design is the arrangement of the two elongated body parts a d, with enlargement-s at the opposite ends underlying and substantially outward from the circular parts I) 0 when the structure is viewed in side elevation.
I claim The design fora gearing-cover for vehicleframes substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
MOSES O. JOHNSON. Witnesses:
WILLIAM H. BARKER, CHAS. L. BURDETT.
