T0 ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JAMES S. RAY, of East Haddarn, in the county of Middlesex, and State of Connecticu have invented a new Design for Cottin-Handles; and I do hcreb)r declare that the following is a full, clear, an exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a. portion of thi specification, in which- Figure 1 is a plan View of a coffin-handle constructed according to my design.
Figure 2, a transverse section showing more fully the shape or configuration of one portion of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
A represents the fixed plates by which the handle proper is attached to the coiin. The central portion A of each of these plates, in the inner sides of which the ends .of the handle itself are pivoted, is rais'ed up c elevated above the remaining surface of the said plate, as shown more fully in g. 2, and is made in the shap of a. cross, as represented in fig. 1. This cross-shaped portion A* of cach plato A is made greatest at its base and extended around the inclined sides thus formed, is ahead or milled rib, a. Formed in relief, upon th upper surface of the circumferential portion of each plate, and surrounding the central cross-shaped portion A of the same, is a vine-shaped wreath or ligure, b, intended to represent or imitate the .trefoil or Shamrock. T11 handle proper is marked B, and is bent in the form shown in fig. 1 and formed upon what, when the handle attached to the coflin, will be the outer .side of the said handle nre figures, of which those situated, one at eac end of the said handle, represent crossed torches c, encircled at their point of intersection by a wreath, d, an having at or near their small ends two crossed branches e, and near their larger or inner ends a transver: braided band,f, wound upon which is a ribbon, g. Situated at the central part of the aforesaid side of tl handle B is the figure L of a book, upon which is laid a crook, i, und a mitre, m; and placed one at either sidei this last-named figure, and between the saine and those just described, as at the end portions of the handle, the curved or drooping figure 'n of a tree, underneath which, in a sitting and bowed position, is the represent tion r of an angel. The two opposite cdgcs of the handle B are milled or beaded at different parts thereof, shown at s.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The design and configuration of a Collin-handle herein shown and described.
JAMES S. RAY.
