TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

Beit known that I, SAMUEL W. VALENTINE, of Bristol, in the county of Hartford, and in the State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Design for Shears or Scissors;" and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this description.

a a' represent the two lblades of a pair of shears, which are pivoted together at the point k. d d represent the handles, which are of equal size and made in somewhat of an oval shape, each having an outer point., y. The handles are both ilared in the form shown, so that either being up will eut the cloth without turning them up or down for right or wrong side up. These flares or bevels are seen at z to x' at the rear end, and from z to z at the front. The arrows show the position of the hand in cutting, as in the position represented in the drawings. The thumb of the right hand passes in a. slanting direction from the rear to the front upon the points xx', and under the points z z', while the second finger of the same hand is bent from front to rear in an opposite direction, with the middle joint upon the point z z', and the second joint under the point x x', and the first finger of same hand easily resting against point z', between point y and the shank m.

The design for shears or scissors herein set forth.
