Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
\VILLIAM C. CODMAN, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR TO THE GORIIAM MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
DESIGN FOR A SPOON, 84,0.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 24,508, dated July 30, 1895,
Application filed June 12, 1895, Serial No. 552,595, Term of patent 7 years.
T (0% whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, VVILLIA O. CODMAN, of the city of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented and produced a new and original Design for Handles of Spoons and Similar Articles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification, reference being had the accompanying drawings, forming part ereof.
Figure 1 is a representation of a handle at tached to the bowl portion of a spoon and illustrating my new design, the tine portion of a fork being shown in dotted lines. Fig. 2 represents a reverse View or" the same.
The leading features of my new design consist in the design as herein shown and described.
In the drawings, 5 represents the handle, and 6 the bowl, of a spoon. It may, however, represent any similar article, one of which is indicated in the drawings.
The outline of the handle at the lower portion extends in a series of outward and inward curves about the base '7, gradually contracting the width of the same to 8 8. Thence the outline extends in nearly-parallel lines, but gradually separating toward the upper portion and becoming bolder in their outward curvings until they end abruptly in the scrolled ends 9 9,portions of which extend inward. The outlines now again curve boldly outward and inward to meet the final curve 10 at the upper end of the handle. The surface ornamentation on the obverse consists of the inverted scrolls extending onto the body of the article to which the handle is attached,
the groups of overlapping scrolls forming borders for the base 7, the headings 11 11 extending upward from the base 7 and ending in Q branched ends at 9 9 and being broken below these ends by the inwardly-turned scrolls forming the ornament 12, which separates the surface of the handle into two panels, the scrolls 13 13 forming borders for the upper 5 panel connected by the finial scroll ll, from which depends the ornament 15. On the reverse the surface ornamentation consists of the leaf ornament 16, extending onto the article to which the handle is attached, the 0 groups of scrolls 17 17 forming side borders to the base '7, the upwardly-extending beads 18 1S branching outward at 9 9 and having the inwardly-scrolled ends 19 19, the scrolls 2O 20 forming borders for the upper panel and dividing it at its lower end from the plain portion of the neck, and the scroll 21 extend ing across the upper end of the handle.
\Vhat I claim is- 1. In the design for the handle of a spoon or similar article, the obverse as herein shown and described.
2. In the design for the handle of a spoon or similar article, the reverse as herein shown and described. 6
3. The design for handles of spoons and similar articles, as herein shown and (lescribed.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
XVILLIAM C. CODMAN.
