UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE \VILKINSON, OF PROVIDENCE, RllODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR TO THE GORIIAM MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
DESIGN FOR A SPOON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 21,603, dated June 7, 1892.
Application filed May 3,1892, Serial No. 431.724. Term of patent 7 years.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE WILKINsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Provideuce, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented and produced a new and original Design For Spoons, of which the following is a specification, reference beinghad to the accompanyingdrawing, forming part thereof.
The drawing is a view of a spoon, illustrating my new design.
The leading features of my design forspoons consist in the narrow neck of the handle gradually increasing in width and forming alternating enlargements and contractions toward the upper portion of the handle, and the contraction of the upper end, relieved by rounded projections, together with the surface ornamentation, consisting of a foliated ornament, having its base located at the point of juncture of the handle with the bowl, extending a short distance along the handle, a transversely-scored rib extending along the central portion of the neck a cluster of headings extending from the upper end of therib and having rounded ends slightly spreading on the grad ually-widening portion of the neck, an outwardly and slightly curved beading extending on each side of said cluster and ending in a small convex ornament, scrolled beadings forming a border for the first enlargement, the following contraction and next enlargement extending in lines practically parallel with the outline and at a small distance therefrom and broken by inwardly-projecting scrolls at the lower portion of the contraction, the upper ends of these headings being scrolled inward, a short curved heading on the upper end, a wild flower, with foliage, represented below said short beading, and a view showing white men habited in costumes of the seventeenth century, treating with an Indian who is seated on the ground against a buffalo-robe, represented on the surface of the handle.
Number 2 in the drawing indicates the bowl of a spoon, and 3 the handle of the same. The interior surface of the bowl is ornamented by a supposed birds-eye view of a portion of an exhibition ground. The portion of the handie 3 nearest the bowl forms a narrow neck, which gradually widens to 4 4, thence curves slightly inward to 5 5, then slightly outward and inward to G 6, now curving slightly outward and extending upward for a short distance in lines almost parallel, and then curving outward to 7 7 and inward to meet the slight projections 8 8, which are joined across the top of the handle by the curved line 9'. The feliated ornament 10 has its base located near the point of juncture between the bowl 2 and handle 3 and extends for a short distance up the neck of the handle, ornamenting thelower portion of the rib 11, this rib being transversely scored by lines which, from being indistinct on the lower portion of the rib, become more prominent toward the upper end of the rib, and above this rib 11 extends the cluster 12 of longitudinal headings, the upper ends of which are rounded and are slightly 7o separated. A border-bead 13 extends on each side of the cluster 12, following the outline of the handle and ending in the small convex projection 14, and above these the headings 15 are scrolled inward and then outward and upward, following the general outline of this portion of the handle. These headings are crossed by the inwardly-curved scrolls 1G and end in the scrolls 17, and around the upper end of the handle is the curved beading 18. Between the scrolls 17 is traced a representa tion of a wild flower 19, with foliage, having stems extending toward the projections 8. Above the cluster 12 and between the beadings 13 is represented a view of a grassy field, with wigwains in the background, while above this and between the headings 15 the view is continued, and in the foreground are the standing figures of two men, habited in garments of the seventeenth century, in earnest conference with an Indian, who is seated on the ground before a buffalo-robe.
Vhat I claim is- The design for a spoon, as herein shown and described.
GEORGE \VILKINSON.
